This dvic is an xcllnt choic for us in battrypowrd applications such as cordlss tlphons, radio control systms, and portabl computrs. Th faturs vry low quiscnt currnt (140µA Typical) and vry low dropout voltag. This includs a tight initial tolranc of 1% maximum and vry low output tmpratur cofficint, making th usful as a low-powr voltag rfrnc. Th rror flag output fatur is usd as powr-on rst for warning of a low output voltag, du to a falling voltag input from battris. Anothr fatur is th logic-compatibl shutdown input which nabls th rgulator to b switchd on and off. Th is offrd in 3-pin TO-220 packag, surfac mount SO-8 (sam pin out as SPX2951), SOT-223, and 3-pin TO-263 packags. Th rgulator output voltag (of th SO-8) may b pin-strappd for a 3.3V and 5.0V or programmd from 1.24V to 20V with an xtrnal pair of rsistors. Th, unlik othr low dropout rgulators, will rmain stabl and in rgulation with no load in addition to th intrnal voltag dividr. This fatur is spcially important in applications lik CMOS RAM kp-aliv. If thr is mor than 10 inchs of wir btwn th input and th AC filtr capacitor, or if a battry is usd as th input, thn a 0.1µF tantalum or aluminum lctrolytic capacitor should b placd from th input to th ground. At lowr valus of output currnt, lss output capacitanc is rquird for stability. For th Instability can occur if thr is stray capacitanc currnts blow 10mA th valu of th capacitor to th fdback trminal (pin can b rducd to 0.5µF and 0.15µF for 7). This could caus mor problms whn 1mA. Mor output capacitanc is ndd using a highr valu of xtrnal rsistors to for th 8-pin vrsion at voltags blow 5V st th output voltag. sinc it runs th rror amplifir at lowr gain. 5 Error Dtction Comparator Output Th Comparator producs a logic low output whnvr th output falls out of rgulation by mor than about 5%. This is around 60mV offst dividd by th rfrnc voltag. This trip lvl rmains 5% blow normal rgardlss of th programmd output voltag of th rgulator. Figur 1 shows th timing diagram dpicting th ER- ROR signal and th rgulator output voltag as th input is rampd up and down. Th ERROR signal bcoms low at around 1.3V input, and gos high around 5V input (input voltag at which V OUT = 4.75V). Sinc th s dropout voltag is load dpndnt, th input voltag trip point (around 5V) will vary with th load currnt. Th output voltag trip point (approximatly 4.75V) dos not vary with load. Th rror comparator has an opn-collctor output, which rquirs an xtrnal pull-up rsistor. Dpnding on th systm rquirmnts th rsistor may b rturnd to 5V output or othr supply voltag. In dtrmining th valu of this rsistor, not that th output is ratd to sink 400µA; this valu adds to battry drain in a low battry condition. Suggstd valus rang from 100K to 1MΩ. If th output is unusd this rsistor is not rquird. Programming th Output Voltag of Th may b pin-strappd for 5V or 3.3V using its intrnal voltag dividr by tying Pin 1 (output) to Pin 2 (sns) and Pin 7 (fdback) to Pin 6 (5V/3.3V Tap). Also, it may b programmd for any output voltag btwn its 1.235V rfrnc and its 20V maximum rating. As sn on th front pag, an xtrnal pair of rsistors is rquird. rcommndd load currnt of 1µA forcs an uppr limit of 1.2MΩ on th valu of R 2. If no load is prsntd, th I FB producs an rror of typically 2% in V OUT, which may b liminatd at room tmpratur by trimming R 1. To improv th accuracy choos th valu of R 2 = 100kΩ; this rducs th rror by 0.17% and incrass th rsistor program currnt by 12µA. Sinc th typically draws 60µA at no load with Pin 2 opn-circuitd, this is a small pric to pay. Rducing Output Nois It may b an advantag to rduc th AC nois prsnt at th output. On way is to rduc th rgulator bandwidth by incrasing th siz of th output capacitor. This is th only way that nois can b rducd on th 3 lad but it is rlativly infficint; as incrasing th capacitor from 1µF to 220µF only dcrass th nois from 430µV to 160µV Vrms for a 100kHz bandwidth at 5V output. Nois could also b rducd fourfold by a bypass capacitor across R 1, sinc it rducs th high frquncy gain from 4 to unity. Pick C BYPASS 1 / 2πR 1 x 200 Hz or choos 0.01µF. Whn doing this, th output capacitor must b incrasd to 3.3µF to maintain stability. Ths changs rduc th output nois from 430µV to 100µV Vrms for a 100kHz bandwidth at 5V output.
