630 metres (or Bust!) Amateur Radio on Long Wave CW Calling frequency 474.2kHz WSPR: khz USB dial frequency, audio between Hz JT9: khz dial frequency, audio between Hz (can spill into FT8 area as necessary) FT8: khz dial frequency, audio between Hz (can spill into JT9 area as needed) SSB: khz LSB dial frequency (occupied bandwidth khz). Bandwidth limited to 2.1kHz. WSQ: khz dial frequency, audio is centred 1500 Hz up You re wasting your time. You ll only get as far as the next street

The Longwave Club of America was organized in January, 1974 to promote monitoring and experimentation on frequencies below the AM broadcast band.

Some MF/ LW History Initially Marine CW operation on kHz with 500 khz international marine calling & distress frequency, 512 khz sec calling & distress & 410 khz DF frequency. In 2012, World Radiocommunications Conference allocated kHz to the amateur service In Australia, Secondary basis - 5 watts Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) Don t forget we also have 137kHz (2200m) Nikola Tesla In Dec 1901, Marconi claimed to have received the first Transatlantic radio transmission. - The letter S in CW. (on 850kHz during daylight hours)

One not so typical 2200 metre (137khz) backyard antenna

Non Directional beacons (aviation and nautical) - Frequencies range from 200kHz to 486Khz - eg. Rockhampton (RK) on 257kHz - Gradually being phased out as new technology becomes prevalent. - Typical antenna either vertical with top hat capacitance loading or Marconi T type

A B C D How does my antenna compare? Antenna impedance without the ATU, Z = 26 -j 415. For 630m, I use a 187uH loading coil with nF shunt capacitor depending on the weather. Final impedance matching is normally 4:1. A B C 60W transmitter output corresponds to about 1-2W EIRP. D

Reactance and Resonance Total impedance of a series RLC circuit (Antenna system). ZL = R + j XL -j XC At resonance, XL and XC cancel, and only R remains. At resonance: XL = XC Ideal Match ZL = 50 - j0.0

Considerations Loading Coil Air spaced in current version. Reduces loss. Toroidal core Type 61 Ferrite (Fair Rite) μi = 125 Medium permeability. Large diameter - minimise loss and improve stability. NewType 52 Ferrite (μi = 250) Ferrite Type 77 (μi =2000) too lossy, unstable at 475kHz. Capacitor Types Air spaced variable capacitor (Vacuum variable for higher power) Mylar (aka PET aka Polyester) capacitors. 1kV Mica or silver mica capacitors. HV Ceramic capacitors Door knob type HV ceramic capacitors At 476kHz antenna << λ/4. Ground loss ~15% λ/4 XLPE insulated wire ~130m due (end effect, dielectric effect etc).

Broadcast Radio goes digital In Europe, analog Broadcast Radio is being phased out. This includes LW, MW and VHF FM. Norway was the first to go 100% DAB in Components like variable capacitors are becoming more difficult to find. In the future we may have to improvise.
