2 VDES = VDE-Terrestrial + VDE-SAT VDE-Terrestrial: Ship Ship Ship Shore VDE-SAT: Uplink Downlink Most ships, regardless the class, have VHF radios. The satellite component of the VDES wants to take advantage of this fact to provide maritime services to a vast population of vessels (when beyond shore station coverage) by reusing their existing VHF infrastructure.
