1 A Cascading Faiure Mode by Quantifying Interactions Junjian Qi and Shengwei Mei Department of Eectrica Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China arxiv: v4 [physics.soc-ph] 31 Dec 2013 Cascading faiures triggered by trivia initia events are encountered in many compex systems. It is the interaction and couping between components of the system that causes cascading faiures. We propose a simpe mode to simuate cascading faiure by using the matrix that determines how components interact with each other. A carefu comparison is made between the origina cascades and the simuated cascades by the proposed mode. It is seen that the mode can capture genera features of the origina cascades, suggesting that the interaction matrix can we refect the reationship between components. An index is aso defined to identify important inks and the distribution foows an obvious power aw. By eiminating a sma number of most important inks the risk of cascading faiures can be significanty mitigated, which is dramaticay different from getting rid of the same number of inks randomy. Cascading faiures in compex systems are compicated sequences of dependent outages. They can take pace in eectric power systems [1, 2], the Internet [3], the road system [4], and the socia and economic systems [5]. For exampe, in power grid a ine is tripped for some reason, such as error of operators, bad weather, or tree contact, and the power transmitted through this ine wi be redistributed to other ines, possiby causing other ine tripping or even cascading faiures. Severa modes have been proposed to study the genera mechanisms of cascading faiures. The topoogica threshod modes [6] provide insight into severa types of cascading faiures. The infuence mode [7] comprises sites connected by a network structure and each site has a status evoving according to Markov chain. In power systems OPA (ORNL-PSerc-Aaska) mode [8, 9] and its variants, such as AC OPA [10, 11] and OPA with sow process [12, 13], are proposed to study the compex goba dynamics of backouts. More recenty the ine interaction graph [14] initiates a nove anaysis method for cascading faiures in eectric power systems by considering the interaction of the transmission ines. The system-eve faiure of tighty couped compex systems is not caused by any specific reason but the property that components of the system are tighty couped and dependent [15]. Based on this idea we quantify the interaction of the components by an interaction matrix and then propose a cascading faiure mode by using this matrix. The interaction matrix can be obtained with cascades from simuations or rea statistica data. These cascades can be grouped into different generations [16 18] and are caed origina cascades to distinguish with the simuated cascades in the foowing discussion. A typica cascade can be: generation 0 generation 1 25, 40, 74, 102, , 73, 82 Here the numbers are the seria number of the faied components. This cascade has two generations whie others might contain one or severa generations. Topoogica properties such as sma-word [19] and scae-free [20] behavior have been found in compex networks. Power-aw behavior is aso discovered for weighted networks [21]. In this paper we discuss the property of the directed weighted interaction network rather than the network directy from the physica system. Assume there are m components in the system, we construct matrix A Z m m whose entry a ij is the number of times that component i fais in one generation before the faiure of component j among a origina cascades. For each component faiure in this generation we find a component faiure that most probaby causes it. Specificay, the faiure of component j is considered to be caused by the component faiure with the greatest a ij among a component faiures in the ast generation, thus correcting A to be A Z m m, whose entry a ij is the number of times that the faiure of component i causes the faiure of component j. An exampe is given in Fig. 1. Then we can get the m m interaction matrix B R m m whose entry b ij is the empirica that the faiure of component i causes the faiure of component j. From the Bayes theorem we have b ij = a ij /f i, where f i is the number of times that component i fais. The B matrix actuay determines how components interacts with each other. We propose a simpe mode to simuate cascading faiures with B matrix. Initiay a components are assumed to work we and the cascading faiure is triggered by a sma fraction of component faiures. Since we woud ike to focus on the interaction of components rather than the triggering events, the component faiures in generation 0 of an origina cascade are directy considered as generation 0 faiures in the simuated cascade. The coumns of B corresponding to the initia faiures are set zero since in our mode once a component fais it wi remain that way unti the end of the simuation. Then the component faiures in generation 0 independenty generate other component faiures. Specificay, if component i fais in generation 0 it wi cause the faiure of any other component j with b ij. Once it causes the faiure of a

The ast generation comprises the faiure of 25, 40, 74, 102, and 155 and in this generation there are three component faiures, which are 72, 73, and 82. (a) The numbers on the edges are a ij, where i is the source vertex and j is the destination vertex. (b) When constructing A, for the two consecutive generations 72, 73, and 82 are considered to be caused by 74 since the a ij starting from 74 are the greatest generation 0 origina cascades simuated cascades 10 1 number of components faied FIG. 2. Downward-pointing trianges denote CCD of the generation 0 faiures. component, the coumn of B corresponding to that component wi be set zero. A component faiures caused by generation 0 faiures comprise generation 1. Generation 1 faiures then generate generation 2. This continues unti no faiure is caused. An exampe for eectric power systems is presented to iustrate the proposed mode. The origina cascades are generated by the AC OPA simuation. We use the form of the AC OPA simuation in which the power system is fixed and does not evove or upgrade. As other variants of the OPA mode, AC OPA can aso naturay produce ine outages in generations; each iteration of the main oop of the simuation produces another generation. We choose transmission ines as components and simuate a tota of 5000 cascades on the IEEE 118 bus system [22], which represents a portion of a past American Eectric Power Company transmission system. The compementary cumuative distributions (CCD) of the tota number of ine outages for origina and simuated cascades are shown in Fig. 2. It is seen that the two distributions match we. In our case B is a rather sparse matrix, a matrix with ony 202 nonzero eements. Just because of the interaction between components denoted by this sparse matrix, the cascading faiure is abe to propagate a ot, which is suggested by the dramatic difference between the generation 0 distribution and the tota ine outage distribution. If the eements of B are a zeros and the components do not interact, a cascades wi stop immediatey after generation 0 faiures and the distribution of the tota ine outages wi be the same as generation 0 faiures. The nonzero eements of B determine how one com- FIG. 3. Links for the origina and simuated cascades. They are caed inks. A ink : i j corresponds to the nonzero eement b ij and starts from the faiure of component i and ends with the faiure of component j. These inks form a directed network, for which the vertices are component faiures and the directed inks represent that the source vertex causes the destination vertex with greater than 0. Fig. 3 shows the network for both origina and simuated cascades. The shared inks beong to set L 1 and the inks ony owed by the origina and simuated cascades respectivey beong to set L 2 and L 3. In our case 133 inks are shared by the origina and simuated cascades. 69 inks are owned ony by the origina cascades and 45 ony by the simuated cascades. It seems that the simuated cascades are quite different from the origina cascades since there are many different
3 FIG. 4. Diagram showing how I is cacuated. origina cascades simuated cascades (a) ink weights out strength (b) (c) in strength inks between them. However, it is not the truth if we take into account the intensities of the inks. The inks are not equay important and can cause dramaticay different consequences. We quantify the importance of a ink : i j by an index I, which measures the expected component faiures that a specific ink can cause on the condition that the number of times that its source vertex fais is known. Specificay, assume a component i fais for N i times, the expected faiures of component j wi be N j = N i b ij. The expected faiures caused by the faiure of component j is N j k j b jk, where k j denotes the destination vertices starting from j. We continue to cacuate the expected faiures unti reaching the eaf vertices. A the expected faiures are summated to be I. In fact, I = v V N v, where V is the set of vertices for which there exists a path starting from ink and N v is the expected faiures of vertex v. Fig. 4 ists a vertices that can be infuenced by ink By using I as weights of the inks we can get a directed weighted network corresponding to the nonzero eements of B matrix. Denote the index of ink for the origina and simuated cascades respectivey as ori and sim. (L 1 L 3) Isim / (L 1 L 2) Iori is 1.007, which means that the inks of the origina and simuated cascades have amost the same propagation capacity on the whoe. Besides, L 1 ori / (L 1 L 2) Iori and L 1 sim / (L 1 L 3) Isim are separatey and 0.992, indicating that the shared inks pay the major roe among a inks. For the shared inks L 1 sim / L 1 ori is This suggests that the overa effects of the shared inks of the origina and simuated cascades are cose to each other. However, it is sti possibe that the weights of the same ink for the origina and simuated cascades can be quite different. To show if the same ink is cose to each other we define a simiarity index S for the shared inks. FIG. 5. (a) CCD of the ink weights. (b) CCD of the vertex out-strength. (c) CCD of the vertex in-strength. S = ( I sim L 1 ( sim L 1 + I ori + I ori ) sim ) ori (1) When the important inks of the origina are cose to their counterparts for simuated cascades, S wi be near 1.0. In our case S = 1.071, which means that most inks, at east the most important inks, have simiar propagation capacity for the origina and simuated cascades. The CCD of the ink weights for the origina and simuated cascades are shown in Fig. 5(a). The two distributions match very we. Both of them foow obvious power aw and can range from 1 to more than 1000, suggesting that a sma number of inks can cause much greater consequences than most of the others. The CCD of the vertex out-strength and in-strength for origina and simuated cascades are shown in Figs. 5(b) 5(c). Here the out-strength is defined as the summation of weights of the outgoing inks from a vertex and the in-strength is the summation of weights of the incoming inks to a vertex. An obvious power aw behavior can be seen, which means that most vertices (component faiures) have sma consequences whie a sma number of them have much greater impact. Another point is that the strength distributions of the origina and simuated cascades match very we, indicating that they share simiar features from an overa point of view. We eiminate 5% of the inks (10 inks) by setting 10 nonzero eements in B matrix to be zero. We get B int by eiminating 10 inks with the greatest weights and B rand by randomy removing 10 inks. In Fig. 6 we show the position of the removed inks in the interaction matrix. Then we separatey simuate cascading faiures with the
4 different propagation capacity. A sma number of inks are much more crucia than most of the others and by eiminating them the risk of cascading faiures can be dramaticay mitigated. We are gratefu for the financia support of NSFC Grant No and China s 863 Program Grant No. 2011AA05A FIG. 6. Position of the removed inks. Back dots denote nonzero eements of B, among which the nonzero eements removed by intentiona mitigation and random mitigation are denoted by red squares and green trianges generation 0 origina cascades random mitigation intentiona mitigation 10 1 number of components faied FIG. 7. CCD under two mitigation strategies. proposed mode by using B int and B rand and the two mitigation strategies are respectivey caed intentiona mitigation and random mitigation. Fig. 7 shows the effects of the two mitigation strategies. It is seen that the risk of arge-scae cascading faiures can be significanty mitigated by eiminating ony a few most important inks. By contrast, the mitigation effect is minor if we get rid of the same number of inks randomy. To concude, we quantitativey determine the interaction of components in the system by cacuating the that one component faiure causes another. By using this information we propose a simpe mode to simuate cascading faiures. The mode is vaidated to be abe to capture the genera properties of the origina cascades through comparison between the origina and simuated cascades. An obvious power aw is found in the distributions of the ink weights and the vertex outstrength and in-strength. The inks have significanty [1] NERC (North America Eectric Reiabiity Counci), 1996 System Disturbances, NERC, Princeton Forresta Viage, Viage Bouevard, Princeton, New Jersey, [2] U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force, Fina report on the August 14th backout in the United States and Canada, Apr [3] S.
