13 WHAT YOU NEED to run a GMDSS VHF radio station 1. A CE type approved radio 2.A ship radio licence (MMSI, CS) 3. An operators certificate

15 SHIPS RADIO LICENCE Apply to and sign up as an ACCOUNT HOLDER Licence is free on line. 20 by post. Renew on line when new equipment is installed or every ten years. The licence should be kept on board the boat. When visiting France or Ireland etc. you risk a fine if you do not!

16 INTERNATIONAL CALL SIGN New Boat On issue of a Ship Licence the boat is given a unique INTERNATIONAL CALL SIGN Typical 2008 UK call sign = 2ATN6 The call sign remains with boat on change of ownership. Ofcom must be informed of the change.

20 Radio Rules and Regulations 10 Points not to do. DO NOT: 1. transmit without the masters permission 2. transmit false or deceptive distress or safety signals 3. transmit without identification 4. shut down the radio when priority traffic is going on (distress, urgency, safety) 5. broadcast* other then distress messages
