USE OF EGNOS AND GALILEO FOR SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS & INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS IN NEW DOMAINS Carmen Aguilera Market Development Project Officer European GNSS Supervisory Authority 1 1
GALILEO TECHNICAL DESIGN OPENS OPPORTUNITIES TO INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS High number of signals Increase of spatial coverage Higher bandwidth (up to 50 MHz with the E5 signal) New coding and modulation techniques, Higher transmitting power and pilot tones Precision Availability/Coverage Reliability Authentication Service guarantee 2 2
GALILEO & GMES ARE FLAGSHIPS OF THE EUROPEAN SPACE PROGRAMMES 3 3
LEVERAGING SYNERGIES OF GNSS AND GMES GALILEO+EGNOS+GMES = Most complete picture ever of our world. Policy perspective: GNSS and GMES are both flagships of the European Space Policy Technical perspective: navigation and Earth observation are complementary User perspective: there is need for an integrated approach both of different techologies and of space and groundbased systems The time for R&D investment in joint applications is now!: Galileo and GMES operations in Applications: Earth monitoring, security, emergency management, climate change. 4 4
HIGHLIGHTS Use EGNOS (SIS and via EDAS) Importance of using early Galileo services, using signal simulator or IOV/IOC satellites Synergies with other satellite based technologies (e.g. GMES) Exploitation plan at medium/large term is expected Complementary to the GNSS Science Call under the Evolutions Programme of ESA 5 5
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES Use of Galileo and EGNOS for scientific applications and innovative applications in new domains Earth Observation Innovative domains GNSS applications targeted to the scientific community GNSS applications with a very high degree of scientific innovation Examples of areas of research in the topic description is NOT EXHAUSTIVE 6 6
APPLICATIONS EXAMPLES (I). EARTH OBSERVATION Geodesy and geodynamics applications Disaster prevention and emergency management, based on measurement of tectonic motions and local deformations. High resolution earth gravity field, for science applications, public institutional services (Seismic, Volcanic and landslide hazard monitoring and mitigation) or commercial use (e.g. oil prospecting, civil engineering). GNSS-R for Ocean monitoring, soil moisture, ice, snow observation. Use information available in GMES services Exploit Galileo innovative features: high number of signals, higher bandwidth, better spatial coverage. 7 7
APPLICATIONS EXAMPLES (II). EARTH OBSERVATION When the solar winds come around, you d better hang onto your GNSS receiver, not your hat Weather forecasting, e.g., using GNSS signals to measure atmospheric conditions. Tropospheric and ionospheric effects on Galileo signal. Effect of extreme solar activity on Earth's magnetosphere. Source: ESA Satellite signals are dependent on the solar activity. Max predicted for 2011/2012! Impact for safety critical applications, high precision applications 8 8
APPLICATIONS EXAMPLES (III). INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS DOMAINS GNSS based authentication solutions and geosecurity location-based services. Potential of Galileo CS Trusted position using EGNOS and EDAS Multi-constellation analysis and implementation of high accuracy solutions for demanding applications. High demanding applications in timing and synchronisation: Industry: e.g. electrical energy distribution, mobile communication networks. Authenticated, certified timing, e.g. banking, financial, data networks. Indoor navigation using pseudolites or other means Elements to be covered: technical, spectrum regulation, standardisation, commercialisation Galileo pseudolites Robotics and industrial processes 9 9
EXAMPLES OF ONGOING PROJECTS SX5 SX5: Scientific Service Support based on GALILEO E5 Receivers Software application for precise positioning based on an E5 targeting scientific users. It exploits the increased range precision of the Galileo E5 signal by combining code-andcarrier positioning in a single-frequency Galileo receiver. Call Topic Grant Budget Galileo EGNOS FP7 2nd Science 0.67 mln 0.88 mln Target applications: atmosphere monitoring, precise positioning change, sea state monitoring, GMES/EO mission support. EDAS I2GPS: Integrated Interferometry and GNSS for Precision Survey Call FP7 2nd I2GPS Development of a novel, integrated approach to the use of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) and GNSS for use in the monitoring of subsidence, tectonic changes or other environmental hazards, which can only be identified by millimetre-precision surveying techniques. Topic Grant Budget Galileo EGNOS EDAS Professional 0.31 mln 0.50 mln 10 10
FAQS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Since it is a scientific call, should I focus on the scientific/technical progress? Research institutions do not have enough experience in preparing a business plan Should I focus on EGNOS, EDAS or Galileo? How can I develop an idea based on Galileo, since it is not operational yet? We are running complementary projects with other funding, can I still apply to FP7? Can PhD students get involved? Can I publish my results in scientific journals, conferences, etc? You proposal will be evaluated against the 3 criteria, including impact. We expect an exploitation plan (medium/long term). We will provide business coaching and support during the lifetime of the project. EGNOS/EDAS are there, and can cover many applications requirements. Make your application Galileo ready. Use simulators. We will provide support. IOV will be available during the project lifetime. Don t be shy. Showing that FP7 is not your only source of funding will demonstrate your commitment We welcome motivated and young workforce! IPR is own by the consortium, and shared as agreed in the consortium agreement. GSA encourages dissemination
FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS Coordination with other projects: GSA/EC encourage collaboration among FP7 projects Be ready to participate in meetings and organise workshops Avoid overlapping with previous/ongoing projects Use all the new media available to maximize dissemination Further information and questions: cordis.europa.eu 12 12
