A built-in microcomputer is used to store, calculate and compensate for all the relevant parameters relating to conductivity, TDS and salinity determination. The mechanical touch keys are highly reliable with tactile and audio feedback. This meter operates with four type AA batteries (1.5 V). Recalibration is not required when the power is turned on again. The CR meter has a large LCD that displays conductivity, TDS or salinity and temperature along with user prompting modes and indication icons. The instrument prompts the user through the calibration and measurement procedures. The meter uses mini DIN with a builtin temperature sensor. Other features include automatic or manual temperature compensation, percentage of power supply display. Carefully unpack the meter and accessories. Inspect for damage caused during shipment. If any damage is found, notify your representative immediately. See instructions on page 18 for recycling of the packing materials. * Sensor used throughout this manual refers to a conductivity sensor. 4

It will activate all segments of the display for a few seconds. Then the meter will display the current cell constant. Shortly afterwards, the temperature will be shown on the LCD and the meter is ready to perform a measurement. Immerse the sensor halfway in the solution. If possible, do not allow the sensor to touch any solid object in the solution. There should be no air bubbles around the sensor either. Shaking or moving the sensor vigorously before recording any measurement will dislodge any air bubbles formed in the sensor. When the meter is not in use, the user should turn off the meter by pressing the key to save battery power. When the voltage of batteries is too low, the meter will display for about to shut down for a few seconds, then shut down by itself. Figure 4 1 Sensor DIN connector 9
10 Measurement Modes of the Meter This meter has four normal measurement modes as follows: 1. Uncompensated Conductivity (µs/cm or ms/cm): This measures the conductive material in the solution with no regard to temperature. 2. Compensated Conductivity (µs/cm or ms/cm): Also known as temperature compensated conductivity that automatically adjusts to a calculated value which would have been read if the sample had been at 25 C (or a different reference temperature that you select). See the section on CALIBRATION SETUP. 3. TDS (mg/l or g/l): This measures the total dissolved solids (TDS); the calculation is based on the Compensated Conductivity and a TDS CONSTANT. The TDS CONSTANT is adjustable. See the section on Setup. 4. Salinity (ppt): This measures the salinity in the solution; the calculation is based on the Conductivity and Temperature. 10
11 The temperature is always displayed in all measurement modes. To change between measurement modes, simply press and release the [Mode] key. Then the unit will cycle through these four modes. When changing the mode, please carefully follow the prompts indicated by the icons on the LCD. Note: Every time the meter is turned OFF, the last mode will be saved so that when the meter is turned back ON again, it will return to the last mode selected. This meter has two special menu as follows: 1. [Setup] menu: Set or customize parameters in the meter with the SETUP icon on. 2. [Calibration] menu: Calibrating cell constant of the conductivity sensor with the CAL icon on. 11

14 Calibration Before Calibration System calibration is rarely required as the CR-30 model is already factory pre-calibrated. However, from time to time it is recommended that you check the system calibration and adjust it when necessary. When you use a new sensor or meter, run the CALIBRATION mode, as the cell constant of the conductivity sensors may differ from one other. Calibration Process 1. During the normal measurement modes, press the [Cal] key and the CAL icon will appear on the LCD. CELL CONSTANT CALIBRATION 2. Immerse the sensor into a known standard conductivity solution (See the section on Preparing and Storage of Standard Solutions) that you select to calibrate your sensor. The meter will display the conductivity value of the standard solution. 3. Wait for the values of temperature and conductivity to stabilize for a few seconds. Using the [ ] and [ ] keys, you can now adjust the reading of the display until it matches the value of the known standard conductivity solution at 25 C. 4. Press the [Enter] key to calculate and save the new value of cell constant or press the [Mode] key to exit the CALIBRATION PROCESS. During cell constant calibration, the following parameters are overridden: temperature reference (set at 25.0 C) and temperature coefficient (set at 1.91%). 14
15 Auto Ranging The model CR-30 is an auto ranging meter. This means that, regardless of the conductivity of the solution (within the specifications of the meter), all you need to do to get on reading is to place the sensor into the sample. After immersing the sensor into the solution, the meter will automatically find the right range for the solution. While searching for the correct range, the meter will display ran on the LCD. AUTO RANGING will take a few seconds after which the measurement will be displayed. Press and release the [Mode] key to show values in other parameters. 15
16 Preparing and Storage of Standard Solutions Suitable conductivity standards are available commercially or the user can prepare them using research grade reagents. Here are some standard solutions you can prepare to calibrate the sensor of the CR-30 model: 1. Standard solution of 1413 µs at 25 C: Accurately weigh out g of research grade dried Potassium Chloride (KCl). Dissolve it in 1000 ml of deionized water You can store the remaining solution in a plastic container for one week; however, the headspace between the cap and the solution must be kept to an absolute minimum. Storing the solution below 4 C can prolong the storage life. If you have any doubt about the accuracy of the stored solution, prepare a fresh batch. 2. Standard solution of ms at 25 C: Accurately weigh out g of research grade dried Potassium Chloride (KCl). Dissolve it in 1000 ml of deionized water 3.
