2 App. B BRU-100 Warnings and Cautions Remote Unit Installation Warnings and Cautions You must adhere to the instructions in this manual to ensure proper operation of the BRU-100 Remote Unit. Aspects of the installation process that require special attention are listed here. Warning: Overhead power lines can cause serious injury. The outdoor unit is installed in an elevated location. Be very careful that the unit, wiring, and any guy wires do not contact overhead power lines. Warning: Maintain a safe distance between the anatenna and all persons. This device is a radio frequency transmitter. It is required to comply with FCC RF exposure requirements for transmitting devices. A minimum separation distance of 8 inches (20 cm) or more must be maintained between the antenna and all persons during device operations to ensure compliance with the FCC's rules for Radio Frequency Exposure. If this minimum distance cannot be maintained, exposure to RF levels that exceed the FCC's limits may result. This equipment must not be co-located with any other transmitting antenna. Caution: Adequate grounding helps prevent lightning damage. An adequate ground wire (10 AWG minimum) must be installed between the outdoor unit and an earth ground. Refer to section 810 of the National Electrical Code. The outdoor unit is an elevated metal object that will attract lightning. Proper grounding provides a path for lightning that minimizes potential damage to the BRU-100. Caution: BRU-100 components are not serviceable in the field. The outdoor unit, power injector, and power adapter are not serviceable in the field and must not be opened. If any of these components become non-operational they must be replaced. 50 Pre-Production

Observe the warnings and cautions from the previous section. See the section Installation Details on page 55 for additional instructions. The physical installation progresses in steps while using the installation tool described in Chapter 2. Note: Perform the status checks in the Step 3 window of the installation tool (page 17) before proceeding with the physical installation described here. Hardware Installation Step 1 Attach the azimuth/elevation bracket to the back of the outdoor unit using the four supplied #10 screws. 4 ODU 011 App. B BRU-100 Remote Unit Installation Step 3 Examine the subscriber s premise and select a potential outdoor unit location considering all of these factors: Obstacles in the immediate vicinity that could severely attenuate the RF path. Consider foliage that changes density with the seasons. Direction to the base station Feasible outdoor unit mounting locations Ground rod or Earth ground points Subscriber s equipment locations in the building Cable routing. 91 meters (300 ft) maximum combined cable length from outdoor unit to host computer. Step 4 Mount the outdoor unit on a tripod, or hold it, near the mounting location and check for adequate signal strength with Step 5 of the Installation Tool. 5 Remote Unit Installation App. B BRU-100 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Permanently mount the outdoor unit. Install the mounting bracket and pole of your choice. The pole must be plumb vertical. Use a level at two points 90 around the pole to ensure it is plumb. Aim the antenna for maximum signal strength, as indicated with the installation tool. Complete all the steps in the installation tool program, described in Chapter 2. Tighten all fasteners on the azimuth/elevation bracket and install pole lock screws. See Ethernet Cables on page 3 for reference. Be sure to slide the connector housing onto the outdoor unit cable before attaching the RJ-45 connector. See Installation Details on page 55 page 56 for reference. Connect the subscriber's computer and verify that it can communicate with their ISP.
