Basic Safety Instructions Basic Safety Instructions Before you start printing: Make sure to follow all warnings on the printer. Use the proper power source typeindicated on the printer s label. Connect all equipment to grounded outlets. Do not use the same outlet for any other system, such as a copy machine or an air control unit that turns on and off. Place the printer where the power outlet is easily seen. Do not allow the power cord to be damaged. If you are using an extension cord, make sure theextension cord s power ampere rate does not exceed that of the printer s cord. Keep electromagnetic devices and other potential sources of magnetic fields away from your printer. Do not use the printer in locations that have high humidity, shocks, vibrations, debris or dust. Leave enough space around the printer for proper ventilation. Do not leave the printer near heat sources such as radiators or heat vents. Do not leave the printer in direct sunlight. Place the printer on a flat table or on a stable surface that extends around the printer. The printer will not work properly if it is tilted or leaning. When packing and moving the printer, do not set the printer on its side or upside down. This may cause the ink to spill. Turn the printer OFF before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth and avoid spilling any liquid on the printer. Caution: Do not unplug the printer to shut it off. Use the power button instead. Do not unplug the printer until the Main Power Switch has been turned off. Do not block any of the printer s vents or insert anything foreign into its slots. Do not attempt to service the printer yourself beyond the troubleshooting techniques covered in this manual. Turn the printer OFF, unplug it and take it to a qualified service technician. Keep the machine level. Safety Instructions for Ink Cartridges Always keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. While handling ink, be careful not to spill it on your skin. If ink does get on your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, flush them out immediately with water. Do not put your hand in the printer or touch the cartridges while printer is in operation. 1

Fast T-Jet Blazer User smanual Do not move the printer head by hand- doing so may damage the printer. Store the ink cartridges in a cool dark place. Allow ink cartridges to warm to room temperature before using them after storage. Do not dismantle the ink cartridge. This could damage the print head. Do not touch the IC chip on the ink cartridges. This will effect the normal printing operations. If you remove the ink cartridges make sure to place them in individual bags and keep them away from dust, dirt and debris. 2

Chapter 1 An Introduction Chapter 1 An Introduction About the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM is an inkjet printer that has been modified to print on almost any type of fabric material as well as non-textiles, such as golf balls, keyboards, tennis balls, etc. (The ink will not work on nylon and certain synthetic materials.) In the past, this type of printing was difficult, if not impossible to do. There were no inks available that would work on both100% cotton and 50/50 cotton/polyester blends and then withstand the rigors of washing. That all changed with the introduction of FastINK TM Textile Ink. Designed specifically for these materials, FastINK TM requires only a post-treatment of heat tocure when printed on lighter shirts. It s even possible to print with white ink on dark shirts with the application of a pretreatment. FastINK TM Textile Ink is so versatile it can be used for printing on non-textiles by simply applying Fast T-Jet Non-Textile Series Pretreatment to the item before printing and Fast T-Jet Non-Textile Series Post- Treatment to the item after printing. Since Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM is based on standard inkjet technology, with the Epson 7800 printer being the heart of the system, you can print from any graphics application like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, CorelDraw, Macromedia Freehand or QuarkXPress. Another very good graphics application you can use is FastARTIST, which is included with as part of your kit. Besides being reliable and versatile, the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM is fast, printing a standard T-Shirt sized image in only one to two minutes.so, whether it s a shirt, a towel, mouse pads, thongs, tops, tote bags, bibs or baseball caps the possibilities are endless. 3

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 User smanual Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM Important Points The Basics You probably can t wait to get started and we share your enthusiasm for the garment decoration process. However, before you print that first shirt, there are a few basics that need to be covered. For the best results read this entire manual first before attempting to print on any garment.. 1. The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM prints best on 100% cotton. When printing on 50% cotton/50% polyester blends, 100% polyester or other natural or synthetic materials you may not achieve the same print brightness. For example: dye from dark polyester fibers may bleed into your print causing the print colors to be effected. A white print on a 50/50 red garment may turn pink when you heat the garment to set the ink. 2. The printer is compatible with ONLY Windows TM based Operating Systems at this time. Your new printer includes the latest versions of both FastARTIST TM and FastRIP. FastARTIST TM is a Windows TM only graphics application that will make preparing an image for print as simple as a click or two of the mouse. With one-click wonder underbasing and simple clipping features, FastARTIST TM can help ease the transition into graphics design if you are not familiar with other applications. For avid users of Photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator etc., you may choose to work within the application of choice and still set up the image properly for printing. There is also the option of importing an image into FastARTIST TM from other graphics applications in order to take advantage of the one-click Underbase Wizard 3. Macintosh Users can still create an image in their favorite graphics application; they will just have to transfer it to a PC for printing. 4. Every image must print to FastRIP TM for final output. Maintenance FastRIP TM works as the printer queue and print manager, allowing you to not only select different print modes and other print attributes, but also archive print jobs for future reprints. Although the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM is simply an inkjet printer, the number one technical support issue is a lack of maintenance of the machine. Printing on T-shirts is 4

Chapter 1 An Introduction not the same as printing on paper.. A shirt gives off much more lint and the amount of ink deposited on fabrics is far greater than on paper. Plus, when printing on dark shirts, you need to apply a pretreatment to the shirt. This pretreatment can get inside the printer and cause numerous problems so we recommend you pretreat shirts as far away as possible (i.e. in another room.) If you take ownership of the required maintenance, printing with the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM will be a joy. If you decide that a few minutes each day is too much time to spend to maintain your investment then you will have more ruined shirts and lots of frustration. See Chapter 8 and 9 for more details. Poor Artwork With so many graphics programs readily available, everyone is an artist. Poor quality artwork will be one of your biggest concerns. There is no magic that will make a low resolution, low quality piece of artwork look great on a shirt. It is important that you take time to learn as much as you can about graphic art programs and some of the simple methods that can be used to improve the quality of customer supplied artwork. Support Support for your printer is provided free of charge from U.S. Screen Print & Inkjet Technology. The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM is sold through a world wide dealer network and, in some cases, direct from U.S. Screen Print & Inkjet Technology. If you purchased your printer from an international dealer outside of the US, you should contact your factory trained and certified dealer for initial support. If the dealer is not able to find a solution to your problem please feel free to contact US Screen Technical support for assistance If you purchased your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM from one of our authorized US dealers, you may want to call your dealer for initial support, but DO NOT feel you have to go to the dealer first. 13 Chapter 1 An Introduction A Word about the Garment Decorating Business and Where to Learn More You are entering a fantastic business, one where you can make a lot of money in a short period of time. But, like any business, there will be ups and downs. You will need to learn about the industry such as trade standards, copyright and trademark laws, how to price your work, how to deal with customers and much more. Learning the business and marketing side is often harder than the actual printing of shirts. There are many valuable resources that can help you, including websites, trade magazines, books, videos and trade shows. Please check out for the latest How To in a box training materials. The Book One of the most valuable books on the industry is, How To Print T- Shirts for Fun and Profit. Written by Scott and Pat Fresener, it is the bible of the industry. Even though this book is geared towards learning the screen printing process, it also contains excellent sections on the business aspects of garment decoration, including marketing and selling your creations, the law, creating graphics, and best of all, a comprehensive Suppliers Directory. Computer Graphics DVDs One of the hardest things to learn for the computer novice is computer graphics. There are a number of excellent DVDs about computer graphics and how to use Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator. The main focus of these DVDs are on the screen printing process, however they also feature excellent sections on how to create designs, how to deal with poor quality original artwork and more. 7

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 User smanual Business and Marketing DVD s Since the business and marketing side is often complex and sometimes frustrating, there is an excellent DVD called Business and Marketing that covers all aspects of running a successful garment decorating enterprise. There is also a good set of DVD son marketing and selling called the Marketing Toolbox. Internet The number one website for the industry is There you will find a wealth of articles, industry links, abuyer s Guide and openforums. Trade Shows and Trade Magazines There are a number of good trade magazines and dozens of trade shows around the world for garment decorating.two of the more popular resources for the when s and where s are the website and the book How To Print T-Shirts. Both contain numerous trade show listings. A Word of Advice When starting a business, it is often easy to think nothing will go wrong. You need to be positive about your venture, but in the beginning, expect the worse. If you take orders for printed shirts before you have even received your machine, you might find that deadlines are hard to meet because of the learning curve and unexpected problems. The garment business is one of deadlines such as event shirts, shirts for special occasions and shirts with dates on them. You must always give yourself room for error. Shirt suppliers might not ship on time. You might not have checked your ink inventory and end up running out of a color. And, yes, you will ruin a few shirts! Accept this as a fact of life in the garment decorating industry. To have the most success, allow extra time to fil orders and don t make commitments that might be hard to make. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone wearing one of your creations, but nothing more disturbing than working all night to meet a deadline. Anyone who has been in this industry has experienced the joy and sorrow of both. Plan ahead and always have a cushion to make sure you meet deadlines. 8

9 Chapter 1 An Introduction

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup Chapter 2 Unpacking and Setup Your T-Jet Jumbo2 is a very large piece of equipment. It is shipped in sturdy crates with bracing to hold the delicate components in place. You MUST NOT uncrate or assemble the printer without the help of an Authorized Service Technician. Please retain all shipping materials, bags, boxes and directions received with the printer. These items will be needed in the event the machine must be returned for repair or transported to another location. If you return or ship a Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM without using the original shipping carton you may void the warranty. The crate may be disassembled for storage. Failure to follow these steps will VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Unpacking Your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM Your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM is shipped in a number of crates and boxes. The largest crate has the main printing machine and key components. The second crate contains the bed for the printer. Your system may have more boxes depending on any optional accessories you ordered. This manual DOES NOT have detailed installation and unpacking instructions because this process must be performed with the help of an authorized service tech. You should have received and signed a Pre-installation Checklist prior to shipment of your printer. This checklist outlined the importance of room conditions, uncrating and assembly and all the other details necessary for successful setup and operation of your printer. The main component of your machine weighs over 500 pounds and will require at least FOUR people to lift it from the crate and onto the printing base. 9

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup Location, location, location The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM should not be exposed to direct sunlight, direct airflow, dusty areas, any strong magnetic forces or in areas of excessively high humidity. The machine does not like to be too dry or too moist with a level of 35% to 80% relative humidity being ideal. Since you will be handling wet ink when refilling the bulk system ink, you should also protect any carpet or floor covering with mats. Make sure that the entire printer base is sitting on a level, stable surface to support the machine. This means that all ground support feet must be safely on the same support surface. This is an expensive and delicate inkjet printer that does NOT like being in a hot or cold shop or garage without proper air-conditioning controls. If left unattended for days or weeks in a hot dry environment the print heads will clog. Consult Chapter 9 Preparing your T-Jet for Down Time for instructions on installing refillable cleaning cartridges if you anticipate not using your machine for an extended period. For convenience and efficiency, place your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM close to the heat transfer press or small conveyor dryer you will be using to cure the ink. If you have two or three printers set up as a production work station, arrange them all around or near the heat source. At night, and when the printer is not in use, cover the machine to keep it protected. Important Point! When printing white ink you must spray a pretreatment on the shirts before printing. DO NOT spray this pretreatment near your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM. In fact, if possible, pretreat shirts in a different room entirely. At the very least, make a simple cardboard enclosure to use for applying pretreatment. Pretreatment is sticky and candamage the printer s Encoder Strip. The Encoder Strip is a thin piece of clear plastic with data that is read by the print head as the unit operates. The Encoder Strip tells the head exactly where to print an image. If the Encoder Strip gets dirty, the printer will get confused printing multiple images, strips of solid ink and many other irregular printing patterns. 11

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM User s Manual Setup Your Authorized Service Tech will complete all the basic set up of the machine, including assembly of the base, printing bed rollers, bed alignment and leveling. He will also install the FastARTIST TM and FastRIP TM software on a PC that should be placed on a table near the machine. He will show you how to fill the bulk ink system, get the ink flowing and power up the printer. He will then do a head alignment and instruct you on proper printing procedures and maintenance of the machine. Plugging the Unit into AC Power The printer must be plugged into its own power source. Do NOT plug the printer into the same circuit other high power use items, such as a heat transfer press. A heat transfer press will cycle on and off, causing power fluctuations and potentially ruining shirts. For more the best results, plug the unit into a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to help prevent ruined shirts during power fluctuations. At a minimum, the printer should be plugged into a power strip with surge protection. DO NOT TURN THE PRINTER ON YET! YOU MUST FIRST INSTALL THE BULK INK SYSTEM. Important Point! NEVER shut off your printer at the power strip; use the Main Power Switch on the actual unit (located adjacent the AC cord). When powering OFF, your inkjet printer goes through a shut down cycle that seats the head onto the capping stationso you won t get head clogs. If you shut the unit off at the power strip it WILL NOT go through a normal shut down.

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup Connecting your T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM Computer to a You can connect the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM to a computer with a standard parallel cable, USB cable, or even an IEEE 1394 FireWire cable. The machine comes with a special gold tip USB cable; use this cable for best results. In any situation, take care not to use an excessively long cable and do not use a switch box (which can often cause communication problems). Your computer needs to be a PC/Windows computer if you will be printing with white ink. For best results you should use a computer with at least 1GB of RAM. RAM is inexpensive and if you can put 2GB or more on your computer it will prevent problems when printing large files. The Universal Serial Bus USB method of communication is standard on all newer computers. However, it is not commonly known that there is only a certain amount of power supplied to the entire bus. This means that if you have a number of items plugged into different USB ports, this may cause communication issues between your computer and the printer. If possible, and for the best performance, use a dedicated computer to control your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM and do not plug anything else into the extra USB ports when printing to your printer. Important Note: If you do not follow the recommended environment, power, maintenance and operating conditions you can void the warranty of your printer. The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM does NOT like to be in a hot, dry shop with excess dust, as well as being plugged into outlets with a lot of other items. Please read and understand the operating conditions and maintenance requirements for your money making investment. 13

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM User s Manual Installing the Bulk Ink System Your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM uses a special bulk ink system. The bulk ink system holds about 200 ml of ink per color (x8) and allows for easy re-filling as needed. In order to prevent damage and ink leakage, your printer was not shipped with the bulk system installed. It is shipped with Epson ink cartridges that will be swapped out for the new bulk system during installation. These cartridges do NOT contain textile ink, but they should be saved for future transporting or shipping of the unit. Once you have removed them, store them in a cool dark location. The bulk system that shipped with your printer may or may not look exactly like the one shown to the right. A Word About Bulk Systems Each bulk ink cartridge has a smart chip that is designed to always read Full. Since a typical inkjet cartridge chip tells the printer when it is out of ink by counting the number of ink drops fed through the print head, that system can t be used for an oversized bulk ink system like the one on your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM. If you print all day long, the Epson Ink Monitor might start to show that you are low on ink based on the number of ink drops when in fact your cartridges still have ink. Therefore, your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM has an Automatic Chip Reset built into the unit. A Bed and Ink Control System on the printing bed has two orange buttons labeled Ink R and Ink L. Should a flashing red light on the printer Control Panel warn you that you are out of ink, reset the cartridge chips by holding down each button for a few seconds until the light turns solid green. Changing Ink Brands Your T-Jet Jumbo2 TM shipped with FastINK2 TM Textile Ink. With a normal inkjet printer it is very common to change from the manufacturers brand to third party inks without any problems. This can cause serious issues when using specially formulated textile inks. All textile inks are NOT created equal and they must not be mixed. If you ever decide to try another brand of textile ink in your printer, you MUST flush out the entire bulk ink system using special flushing solution (available from US Screen) before doing so. If you don t do this, the mixture of both brands can turn to a chunky mess and form what might be caled severe cholesterol in the ink tubes. In fact, this mixture may permanently clog the printing head.

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup Note: The T-Jet Jumbo2 TM MUST use FastINK2 TM when working with the special white ink. You may only use older FastINK TM in a seven color (non-white ink) system. For further details refer to Appendix A. Bed and Ink Control System Functions Affixed just below the printer control panel is a helpful guide detailing the various functions available with the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM Bed and Ink Control System. You can use this guide in conjunction with the LCD display of the control panel to help troubleshoot many common printing issues or procedures. Filling the Bulk Ink System 1. Protect your work area with paper towels, newspaperor a painter s drop cloth because the ink will permanently stain most surfaces. You are also advised to wear disposable gloves to prevent skin irritation. The starter kit for your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM includes 8 oz. (250 ml) bottles of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black FastINK2 TM along with 1 liter of white. You will also have 8 continuous flow ink cartridges and funnels; 1 for each color and 4 cartridges dedicated for white. 2. To fill the cartridge, pull off the rubber cap and place the funnel into the hole. Slowly pour in the ink. When adding ink, lift the funnel out of the hole slightly, to allow air to escape as ink fills the container. Note: DO NOT overfill the cartridge. There is a plastic marker in the center of the cartridge that tells you when you have reached the maximum ink level. 15

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM User s Manual 3. Reseal the cartridge by placing the rubber cap back into the hole. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each color. NOTE: The newer bulk systems for this type of inkjet printer are CLOSED systems. This means the rubber caps must be tight to prevent a loss of vacuum. An ink pump is used to improve ink flow during high speed printing. Note: Follow the color coding on the cartridge for the correct ink color. White FastINK will be used in cartridges 1-4. Important Point! You received the Epson 7800 Operating Manual with your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM. This was included because the manual contains details on how to perform certain maintenance routines, head alignments, troubleshooting and the general operation of the printer. However, in order to print on garments, which requires significantly more ink than printing on paper, we have changed certain functions of the printer. The main change is the Ink Levers that are used to hold the ink cartridges in place. On the original 7800 these levers are also used to apply air pressure to the cartridges. On the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM, these Ink Levers are ONLY used to lock the cartridge in place and release the air pressure. You will RARELY use these levers and their operation will be different than outlined in the Epson 7800 manual. During maintenance routines you may be prompted to raise or lower the ink levers. You DO NOT do this at the lever. You must press the L button or R button for the Left or Right lever function. 4. Once all the cartridges have been filled, press the green L & R buttons on the side control panel. These buttons are the same as raising the ink levers on a normal Epson When working with the bulk ink cartridges removing, filling, replacing, etc., you must ALWAYS press the two L & R green buttons FIRST before you lower or raise the ink levers.

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup 5. Release both sets of cartridge by raising the adjacent ink levers. 6. Remove the standard Epson ink cartridges that shipped with the printer and put these aside for future use. 7. Insert the bulk ink system cartridges into the appropriate slots. (The cartridges are color coded and will fit tightly in position.) When all the cartridges are in place, LOWER the ink levers for both sets. You will then be prompted on the LCD control panel to Lower the Ink Levers. At this time, press the green L & R buttons. 17

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2 TM User s Manual Starting the Ink Flow Once the cartridges are in place you will need to prime the lines and flush out the Epson standard ink. The easiest way to accomplish this is by performing a Power Cleaning. Note: A Power Cleaning will use A LOT of ink. The plastic Maintenance Tank bottle mounted to the base of the machine will fill up with waste ink as you do a Power Cleaning. 1. Turn the printer ON at the main control panel of the printer. 2. The control panel status should read Ready. If not, press the Back button on the Bed and Ink Control panel to load the bed. 3. Press the right arrow once. Press the down arrow and scroll through the menu options until you come to Maintenance. Press the right arrow again. 4. Press the down arrow and scroll through the options until you find Power Cleaning. Press the right arrow to accept. 5. The control panel will display, You must move ink levers when cleaning. Press the right arrow to accept.

Chapter 2- Unpacking and Setup 6. Press the middle (Enter) button to execute (or cancel) the Power Cleaning. 7. The printer will begin the Power Cleaning by showing a percentage complete. The LCD display will prompt you to release the right lever. Although it appears to ask you to release the lock lever in the back, THIS IS INCORRECT FOR THIS MODIFIED SYSTEM. Instead, press the green R button on the Bed and Ink Control System panel when prompted to raise/release the blue ink lever. You will then be instructed to perform this process for the left side. Press the green L button and raise the blue ink lever when prompted. You will have to execute this procedure twice more before the remainder of the power cleaning becomes automatic. Note: Power cleanings use ink to flush the system. Do them only when necessary. Keep an eye on your maintenance tank and do not let it overflow. Replenishing Ink Levels As you print, you will use ink and levels in your bulk system cartridges will drop. When doing a lot of dark shirts, you might see the white ink levels drop more rapidly than other colors. The system is designed to be easy to refill using the supplied funnels and ink, so top off the bulk system as often as necessary. Important Point! Before you remove the rubber cap on the top of each bulk ink system cartridge, you MUST press the green L & R buttons and move the two blue ink levers to the UP position! You can then remove the cap and replenish the ink. Use the triangle as a guide and DO NOT OVERFILL. When you are done, LOWER the blue ink levers and press the green L & R buttons to re-apply pressure to the cartridges. 19
