ALZO SPARKS LIGHT USER GUIDE The ALZO Sparks Light is a specialized light source specifically designed to illuminate the interior of gemstones, to enhance the spectral qualities (brilliance), and to allow these qualities to be photographed. Diamonds are the best subjects for an ALZO Sparks Light but other stones will respond with interesting effects as well. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Installing Batteries 2. Power ON 3. Assuring a full Re Charge 4. Camera Requirements 5. Attaching the ALZO Sparks Light to the camera 6. SYNC Connection 7. Adjusting the Output of the ALZO Sparks Light 8. Optimal lighting configuration for the ALZO Sparks Light 9. It is all about controlling light ratio 10. Camera Aperture and Depth of Field 11. Camera Shutter Speed 1. Installing Batteries The ALZO Sparks Light is powered by 2 AA batteries (2 are included) and we recommend using 2 sets of 2300 mah Ni Mh rechargeable batteries. 2 in the Sparks Light and 2 in the charger for continuous power. Slide the battery compartment cover down as indicated by the arrow on the cover. The cover will open and swing up on its hinge. Install the batteries with the + battery top in the rear of the compartment, battery top in front as shown. Close the lid and slide it up to close. A fully charged battery set will provide more than 100 flashes. Do not let the batteries run down completely as low battery power will slow down recycle time and could affect the light output of the ALZO Sparks Light. 2. Power ON the ALZO Sparks Light shopify.htm 1/6

Press the "PUSH ON" button for 1 second to power up the Sparks Light. This button/indicator will glow green when power is switched on. If the ALZO Sparks Light is not used for several minutes, the "PUSH ON" power indicator will go off and will "auto start" when the light is used. After the "PUSH ON" power indicator light glows green, the ALZO Sparks Light will take about 10 seconds to fully charge. The "READY/TEST" button will flash orange when the ALZO Sparks Light is charged and ready for use. Pressing the "READY/TEST" button will test flash the light and recycle the power. 3. Assuring a Full Re Charge The "READY/TEST" button will flash rapidly when the ALZO Sparks Light is fully charged. As the Sparks light looses charge the "READY/TEST" indicator blinking will slow down. If the "READY/TEST" button blinking slows or stops flashing, this indicates that the ALZO Sparks Light charge is too low and although it will flash, the intensity will be diminished. Press the "PUSH ON" button for 1 second to recharge. The ALZO Sparks Light will hold a full charge for several minutes. Alternatively you could press the "READY/TEST" button to discharge and recharge the ALZO Sparks Light, although this will consume more battery power. When photographing with the ALZO Sparks Light, you must wait for a full recharge cycle between shots (about 10 seconds). Do not photograph if the "READY/TEST" is blinking slowly or off completely. 4. Camera Requirements The ALZO Sparks Light will not work with all digital cameras and requires specific camera features as follows; Macro Focus ability Manual exposure control Camera Lens zoom of at least 4X, 6 12X is preferred External "Studio" Flash Sync output PC connector or Hot Shoe Lens filter thread The Sparks Light is guaranteed to produce excellent high resolution images of gemstones with the FUJI S9000 camera. Photographing gemstones and jewelry is close up or "macro" photography and typically a macro focus lens must be very close to the subject. The ALZO sparks light needs to be 6" to 16" from the subject and will not work very close to the subject. Therefore a "Close Up" Filter is required, attached to the camera lens, before the ALZO Digital Sparks Light. The Close Up Filter of +4 (or more) allows the lens zoom function to act as a powerful magnifier for very small objects and provides a good working distance for the sparks light. We recommend the addition of a "cross screen" filter to enhancing the drama of images produced with the ALZO Sparks Light. Our demonstration images include a 4 point cross screen filter. 5. Attaching the ALZO Sparks Light to the camera Typically the ALZO Sparks Light attaches to the filter set with a 55 mm threaded lens mount adapter supplied with the Sparks light. 55mm Cross Screen and Close Up filters attach to the Sparks Light and then a Lens Thread adapter attaches this combo to the camera lens. We can supply a lens thread adapter for all digital cameras and lenses. See illustration below: shopify.htm 2/6

For the best performance of the ALZO Sparks Light, the Sparks light should be between 6" 16" from the subject. For most cameras and lenses the addition of a close up lens to the camera lens is required for very small objects like earrings, rings and pins. Using a lens in macro mode requires that the lens be very close to the subject maybe only 1". In addition, the lens zoom function will be restricted and therefore will not provide the required magnification for very small objects. A close up lens allows the zoom to function as a magnifier enlarging the subject while maintaining the optimal distance from the Sparks Light to the subject. Usually a +4 Close Up lens is sufficient, but the +2 and +1 lenses included in the set can be added for further magnification. 6. SYNC Connection The ALZO Sparks light requires a sync connection to the camera. The light is supplied with a 20" coiled sync cord that plugs into the SYNC connector below the Sparks Light "READY/TEST" button and has a PCtype connector for connection to a camera external flash sync output. Most professional digital and film SLR cameras have a PC external flash sync output. If your camera does not have a PC external flash sync output and does have a flash hot shoe, then you will need a PC to Hot Shoe adapter supplied by ALZO shopify.htm 3/6

digital, PN If your camera does not have an external flash sync output it will not work with the ALZO Sparks light. ALZO Sparks Light M A setting As the ALZO Sparks light is an accent light, the recommended setting of the M A switch on the front of the ALZO Sparks Light is M. The A setting is not effective. Disregard the printed table on the back panel of the ALZO Sparks Light. 7. Adjusting the Output of the ALZO Sparks Light The ALZO Sparks Light aperture rings allow for the adjustment of the amount of accent light and the incident angle of light to the subject stone. To increase or decrease the amount of light, the two aperture rings adjustment tabs are moved independently to open or close the aperture window. To change the incident angle of light to the subject the aperture rings are rotated together. Both adjustments will produce different spectral qualities in the subject gem stone. Image below shows 0%, 50% and 100% opening. Once the ALZO Sparks Light aperture rings and the ambient light are adjusted to the desired illumination ratio, (see the ratios discussion below) we recommend rotating the aperture rings in unison while shooting many images. Remember to allow the Sparks light to fully recharge between shots. You can then preview the images and select the image to your liking. We also recommend varying the angle of the camera to subject. This adjustment may be necessary to reduce direct reflections from some of the facets of the subject gem stone. Actually for all stone cuts there is an optimal angle where the results will produce the most refraction with the least direct reflection. 8. Optimal Lighting Configuration for the ALZO Sparks Light The optimal lighting companion for the ALZO Sparks Light is the ALZO Digital 100 "Cool Lite" Tent Kit. This kit includes a small ALZO 14" imaging Tent with two ambient light sources. The ALZO Tent with the ALZO 100 "Cool Lites" provides a surrounding soft lighting environment for the metallic part of the subject jewelry, while the ALZO Sparks Light, mounted on the camera lens, focuses refraction light into the subject gemstone(s). This lighting kit configuration produces correct lighting ratios and requires camera settings of aperture f5.6 to f16 with shutter speeds of 1/15 to 1/100 second. Always use a camera tripod With the ALZO Sparks Light and for best results use a remote shutter release. Color Temperature Considerations Other light sources like flash and HOT lights could be used as ambient light sources, but color temperature should be considered. Small flash mono lights like the Smith Victor 110i with a color temperature of 5500k can provide ambient lighting. A flash light with more than 50 watt/sec of power is too intense as an ambient light source and most flash lights will require a neutral shopify.htm 4/6

density filter or barndoors over the light to reduce the intensity. Also, the model bulb of most small flashes are too weak to be useful to accurately adjust the focus. Tungsten HOT lights require color correction blue filters to bring the color temperature up to 5500k. As this combination produces less than ideal CRI, we strongly recommend ALZO Digital Cool Lites over HOT lights. Conclusion, although you can use small flash lights and HOT lights as ambient tent light sources, the ALZO 100 Digital Cool Lite with a color temperature of 5500k is the best choice. 9. It is all about controlling the Light Ratio The key to the successful usage of the ALZO Sparks Light is to control the ratio of the ambient light to the light output of the ALZO Sparks Light. The output of the ALZO Sparks light is adjustable and the intensity of the ambient light can be controlled by moving the light source(s) or by employing barndoors or neutral density filters on the ambient light sources. Always use a camera tripod with the ALZO Sparks light. We have found that a ratio of about 4:1 or 6:1 (ambient to Sparks light) is best for gold with diamond settings but other ratios may be desirable as well. The greater the intensity of the ambient light compared to the ALZO Sparks Light, the less of the spectral qualities or brilliance will be photographed. This requires trial and error test shots while varying either the ambient light or ALZO Sparks Light to optimize the effect to your liking. As you make lighting adjustments and test shots, you will need to make adjustments to the exposure values of your camera. It is prudent to record all of the parameters of the lighting configuration and camera settings when you achieve the optimal effect, so that you can repeat the photographic effect. Best Practices Method Start with the ALZO Sparks light off and with your camera set in "aperture priority" mode and manual focus on your subject. Set the aperture to f8 or smaller. Use the cameras light meter and some test shots to find the best shutter speed for your chosen aperture and subject. Record these settings and switch the camera to manual exposure control with these settings. Now add the Sparks light and take more test shots while decreasing the shutter speed or adjusting the Sparks Aperture Rings. Review your test shots and record the settings for your best results. We recommend setting the ALZO Sparks Light aperture (see below) to about 50% when adjusting the ratio. The following images demonstrate the adjustment of the aperture rings of the ALZO Sparks light while leaving the ambient light unchanged. CAMERA ISO = 200 APERTURE = F11 SHUTTER SPEED 1/30 SPARKS APERTURE = 1/3 shopify.htm 5/6

CAMERA ISO = 200 APERTURE = F11 SHUTTER SPEED 1/30 SPARKS APERTURE = 2/3 CAMERA ISO = 200 APERTURE = F11 SHUTTER SPEED 1/30 SPARKS APERTURE = 100% When using flash lighting for ambient, light while your camera is set to a very small aperture, you will not have much exposure control in the camera other than selecting ISO settings. 10. Camera Aperture and Depth of Field As the ALZO Sparks Light is used in macro photography of very small objects, your camera aperture should be very small to maximize the focus depth of field. Apertures smaller then f 8 are best for macro imaging of jewelry and gems. Manual focus is recommended as camera Auto Focus will probably not work correctly and you will want to select the specific "point of focus" on the subject. In addition: always use a camera tripod for the sharpest images. 11. Camera Shutter Speed If you are using flash lights as your ambient light source the shutter speed could be 1/125 sec and will not affect exposure. If you are using continuous lights as your ambient light source you will need to experiment with different shutter speeds and we recommend starting at 1/30 second. shopify.htm 6/6
