Creating a Frame by Frame Animation for PhotoStory There are an unlimited number of animation styles that you can create using the PhotoShop Elements software. Depending on the type of animation you want, you may use just one image or you may want to use a variety of different images. This tutorial will discuss both techniques. An Image with Motion 1. Using Photoshop Elements 5.0, open the image you would like to animate. You will now see one layer in the Layers Palette. 2. Right click on the layer, and select Duplicate Layer. 3. Press OK to name the layer Background copy.
4. You will now see two layers in the Layers Palette. 5. Hide the original Layer by clicking the eyeball (layer visibility). This will leave only the new layer visible. 6. Make sure that the Move Tool is selected from the toolbar on the left side of the window. 7. Use the move tool to resize, move and rotate the picture in the layer to the desired location. This is completely up to you depending on how you want your animation to look.
8. Now create a new copy of the layer that you just edited by using the same technique in step #2. You will now have 3 layers. 9. Use the move tool to resize, move and rotate the picture in the new layer (Background Copy 2) to the desired location. This is completely up to you depending on how you want your animation to look. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 as many times as necessary to create the desired visual effect for your animation. This might mean you will have as many as layers depending upon how much motion you are trying to create.
11. Save the Photoshop document as a.psd file (Photoshop format). This is important so that the layers that have been created get saved for future editing. Saving the Layers as JPEGs so that they can be used in PhotoStory 1. Using the Layers Palette, click the eyeball (layer visibility) to hide all of the layers except for the first one.
2. Save the Photoshop document as a JPG with only the first layer visible. Name the file A1 (for ANIMATION 1). You will need to remember which folder you are saving the JPG files into so later you ll know where to find them. 3. Now you will need to save the rest of the layers. One at a time, you will be using the same techniques used in step 2, each time clicking the eyeball (layer visibility) to reveal the next part of the animation. You ll then save each one as a JPEG, using file names A2, A3, A4, etc so that when you are finished you will have one separate picture file for each frame of your animation. This will take about 10 minutes if you have more than 15 layers. 4. Once all of the layers have been saved as JPEGs, you will be done with PhotoShop (at least for this animation). Making the Animation Happen in PhotoStory 1. Open the Photostory project and import all of the images ( A1, A2, A3, A4, etc ).
HINT - Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on each of the files so that you are able to select more than one at a time. The images will now be on the timeline (at the end) in PhotoStory. 2. For each picture in your animation, you will need to make 3 (three) different adjustments. (this process takes about 5-10 minutes for a long animation): a. Put a blank title on each frame. This will remove all the custom pan and zoom effects that PhotoStory adds. b. Shorten the duration that each frame stays on the screen. This makes the animation happen quickly. c. Remove the transition from each frame.
3. Here are detailed steps for adding the Blank Titles: a. Go to the PhotoStory screen that says Add a Title to your Pictures b. Highlight the text that says <Type text to add a title on the selected picture> and then press the SPACE BAR to make it DISAPPEAR. c. Advance to the next image in the animation using the Next Picture button. d. Remove the title from that frame by adding a blank title. Repeat this process until all of the images have blank titles on them. 4. Here are the detailed steps for shortening the duration of each frame. a. Go to the PhotoStory screen that says Narrate your pictures and customize motion b. Click the Customize Motion button. c. Click the radio button that says Number of seconds to display the picture. Enter a value it is safe to start with 0.2 seconds. Make it higher if you want the animation to move more slowly, and reduce it to 0.1 if you want the animation to really move quickly. Save the frame, and then move to the next picture
d. Continue changing the duration of each frame in the animation. e. HINT if you can COPY (ctrl-c) the number of seconds (0.2), and then paste it (ctrl-v) on each screen as it opens, it will save you a lot of time typing or clicking the arrows to adjust the time. 5. One last thing to do Remove all transitions from the animated frames. a. Go to the PhotoStory screen that says Narrate your pictures and customize motion b. Click the Customize Motion button. c. Click the Transition tab at the top. d. Click the checkbox Start current picture with a transition so that there is no check mark. This will remove the transition and allow the animation to rum more smoothly. e. Save the changes and move to the next picture You are now ready to watch your animation! 1. Close the Customize Motion screen. 2. Move to the first frame of your animation. 3. Select the Preview button to watch the fun!
