1 Currency Effect: 1.) Find an image of a person, place, or thing and open it up to your PSD. 2.) Image- Adjustments- Desaturate (makes it look black & white) 3.) Image- Adjustments- Levels. Change the face of your person/place/thing. Black levels should be about 50, and white levels should be about 150. Adjust your levels so it looks highly contrasted. For example, if you put my Leo picture at 150, he looks way too bright, so I changed his level to 166.

2 Leo with 150 white level Leo with 166 white level 4.) Filter- Blur- Surface Blur I changed the radius to 10 and the threshold to 23. You want the photo to look soft, kind of like a painting. 5.) SAVE THIS PSD as Displace. We are going to need it later in this project. 6.) Press CTRL+ ALT+ Z to step backwards until you are at your desaturate step and SAVE IT AGAIN as just Desaturated. 7.) Image- adjustment- levels- change to 15, 1, and 205.

4 8.) Image- Mode- Grayscale 9.) Image- Mode- Bitmap (play around with the settings, I made mine go to 400 and it looks pretty good, but it also looks good with 300), and change the setting to halftone screen 10.) Change frequency to 30-40, change shape to line and change your angle to 0

7 14.) Image- Adjustments- Levels. Change the white balance to ) Filter- Distort- Displace Change horizontal scale to 1 and vertical scale to 3. *Stretch to fit *Wrap around

8 16.) A pop-up window will come up. When it does, you are going to look up the displace image you saved from before.

15 Rule of Thirds: In art, it is more aesthetically pleasing to have the focus of a photo/image occur towards one side of the project than the other. This is what we are aiming for. Not Rule of Thirds: When the focus of an image falls directly in the center of a photo. We do NOT want this because it reflects poor composition.

16 How Currency Uses Elements/Principles of art, and the Rule of Thirds: Fijian $5.00: -Emphasis: The parrot is front and center, clearly focused, and floating in the middle of the bill. -Proportion/ Scale: The large parrot is the main focus towards the right of the bill, but the small basket to the bottom left pulls down the weight of the image, creating a unique balance.

17 - Rule of Thirds: The parrot is more towards the right hand side of the bill. Back side of Fijian Dollar: -Rule of Thirds: The iguana falls towards the left hand side of the bill. -Harmony: Though the iguana is the main focus, the flower is also very large. Due to the jungle scenery in the background, the iguana and flower look like they belong together. -Rhythm: The textured pattern of the frame where the words five dollars are written has a zig-zag pattern that encourages your eye to look all over the currency. South African Rand: -Rule of Thirds: The lion is the main focus and occurs toward the left side of the page, though very close to the center. -Pattern: The patterns around the frame of the lion make for a subtle decoration, while being simple enough as to not distract from the lion.

18 -Contrast: The left side of the bill has a textured pattern look. The right side is white and blank. Two contrasting textures in the same composition to make an interesting result. New Zealand Dollar: -Emphasis: The person in the image is very focused and clear, and there is nothing around him that is very distracting. -Balance: The mountain to the left of the man and the heavy black dot to the right keep the artwork level and balanced. -Rhythm: The wavy, alternating marks on the left side of the bill create a sense of interesting movement.

19 Make your own pattern/texture/design: There are several ways you can make your own background design or texture like the ones below: 1. Use your shapes tool: Line Tool: 1.) Fill: Fill is what color fills the inside of a shape. For a line tool, you should have this off which is when the Fill box is white with a red line through it.

20 2.) Stroke: Stroke is the color of the outline of a shape. For the line tool, this is the color you want the line to be. 3.) Stroke Option: Stroke option is what kind of line you want to have. There are only 3 options: straight, long dotted, and short dotted. 4.) Weight: Weight is how thick you want the line to be. For a thin line, you will have a small number. For a fat line, you will have a larger number. You can duplicate lines and assemble them so they are even and create a unique design: Practice Making a Symmetrical pattern by using shapes: 1.) I made an ellipse and use my transform tools to tilt it by using Transform-rotate 2.) Right click on the shapes layer in the highlighted blue section and select duplicate layer. Your layer will be placed directly on top of the shape you duplicated. Pull your

21 shape apart from your layer so that you have a double of your shape. 3.) Right click on the highlighted blue area and select Merge Visible. This will make both shapes one layer. You need to use your magic wand tool to make sure you delete all the extra layers. 4.) Duplicate layer. Other Tips: -To keep your shapes/lines straight and

22 perfect, turn your grid on like from our last project. View- Show- Grid

23 Using the line tool, paint bucket tool, and shape tool, I was trying to make a unique pattern similar to the one in this New Zealand Dollar:

24 I used the Filter Gallery called Rough Pastels to make a unique effect: Increase the distortion to make a more dramatic change:

25 Currency Guidelines: 1.) Pick a place where your currency is from (country, state, region, continent, planet, fictional setting from a movie/book, etc) 2.) Pick a person you want to represent on your currency (it should make sense with the location it is from) *it is possible to have more than one person on your currency, but they should not be the main focus 3.) Consider a few items that might be significant to put in as details (animals, items, foods, etc) 4.) You need no less than two different patterns or textures 5.) Your currency needs to use 5/7 elements of design, and you need to be able to identify where they are and how it is one of the elements 6.) Your currency needs to be double sided 7.) Use the currency wrap effect on the person you choose and on the main object of focus once on the back side 8.) Use filters from the filter gallery where it would improve the look of your currency 9.) Your currency can have color, or be black and white or monochromatic (one main color with different dark areas and light areas) 10.) You need to take your time and focus on your work, produce a unique and impressive currency design ***Each bill should be 8 inch width, 4 inch height, 300 resolution and set to CMYK color. *** Make a new document for each side, front and back. So two documents total. *Please ask me for help/advice/feedback whenever you are feeling frustrated or lost.
