es minutes Program Synopsis This program guides students through a selection of printing / finishing process that provide an understanding of how each printing / finishing equipment functions to enable the selection of an appropriate printing systems to decorate a variety of materials such as plastics, papers, metals and cardboards. Printing uses imaging in different ways to produce multiple impressions in short to long run production as each printing process has different plate / image requirements which affect the final end product quality, some use printing plates others only use electronic data to create direct mages that will be transferred without plates to the material. All printed goods needs to be finished to meet the client needs such as books, food wrappers, newspapers magazines and industrials products this program shows the type of equipment needed to finish print these. Lithography, digital printing, and flexography, are the main printing processes used around the world today, this program explores how each method impacts on a clients selection process to ensure that the production output needed fit the costing range, image and quality requirement that are need to be meet a clients needs. 2 Teacher Notes: Garry Amy Introduction In today s fast paced society there is a need to get printing produced in quick turn around times from designer to pre-press, printed production and finishing within controlled budgets. It is also important to choose the right printing methods, as some processes can do the same job but with higher costs and waste valuable resources in the process. This program encourages students to consider all the major aspects and understanding of a print production process from traditional to digital technology and see how finishing completes the process to items we all treat as common items but we don t think much about what goes on behind the scenes to enable this to happen This program incorporate the major printing processes used along with the opportunity to be informed at make choices by having an understanding of how processes work. Program Rationale This program is aimed at year 7 and 8 students. It sets out to give students a basic knowledge of the selection process in printing, and enables informed choices in relation to printing processes. Students will gain an understanding of many career opportunities in this sector of the manufacturing industry. 3 Program Worksheet Before the Program 1. Have a class discussion on what the world would be like if we had no printing on anything at all. How would this impact on your day to day living? 2. Each person should collect six different printed items and after the program has been completed try to identify which printing process was involved in its production. 3. In small groups obtain a coloured magazine printed picture and see if you can magnify the work with a magnifying glass or other lens. What do you see? Why is this? Discuss your findings
1. List the printing process identified in this program. During the Program 2. What products are printed using cheaper papers in printing? 3. What products are higher quality papers used for in printing? 4. What are printing plates made from in the offset lithographic print process? 5. What are spot colours used for? 6. How is digital printing different from offset lithography? 7. What are the advantages of flexography printing? - 4 -
8. What methods are used to dry inks? 9. How is digital printing different from traditional printing? 10. What is a substrate? 11. Why is coloured artwork separated into four plates? 12. Book casing refers to what? 13. Binding and finishing uses different equipment to finish the printed work. Explain these terms: a) Knife folding machine b) Perfect binding machine c) Guillotine - 5 -
14. Buckle fold uses papers at what weights? - 6 -
After the Program 1. Research and compare two printing processes outlined in the program and comment on their suitability or otherwise to produce a magazine. Document your findings. 2. Create a word search using the printing terms. plates ink impressions substrate grippers direct imaging blanket sheet -fed ink jet electrophotography squeegee web -press folder screen stencil 3. Collect examples of six different printed products and attach a description to each item that explains the main features of the printing process used. Set them out in easy steps or diagrams/ pictures and clearly show how the processes relate to your examples
