2 Short Course in Camera & Lighting A. Course Information This course aims at offering students a comprehensive understanding of the different perspectives associated with the operation of a camera. The course introduces the different shots, lighting set-ups, latest equipment and techniques used by the cinematography Industry to achieve desired results. The course strongly encourages personal experiments through practicals. Students will learn how to operate a camera efficiently, apply lighting and acquire sound. Job Prospects: Lighting Designers Camera Operators B. Course Aims & objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Understand and use appropriate technical terms to refer to specific type of shots required. Demonstrate skills to perform specific shots. Understand, use and recommend the use of different supportive gears to achieve shots as required. Demonstrate appropriate skills to vary required settings to operate camera for proper exposure, depth of field and focus. Make use of appropriate microphone and audio hardware to acquire sound. 3 PART I - Regulations C. Course Entry Requirements Unemployed youth not having studied beyond HSC and in the age group of years old [as per requirements set by National Skills Development Programme (NSDP) ] or alternative requirements as set by NSDP and Mauritius Film Development Coorporation (MFDC). The course is also open to fee-paying candidates not falling under the NSDP. D. Course Mode and Duration Full Time: (1 month Lecture & Practical and 1 month Work Placement) There will be 15 formal Lecture & Practical sessions of 4 hours each representing 60 contact hours in total. The remaining hours will be devoted to self-study with students expected to spend at least 2 hours per day over the month. Candidates under the NSDP category will be required to undertake a 1 month work placement as per the requirements of the NSDP and/or MFDC with a duration which shall be at least 60 hours. E. Teaching and Learning Strategies Lectures, Tutorials and Practical Sessions Class Tests and Assignments Structured Discussions & Self Directed Study Workshops and Seminars Case Study of real world problems Work Placement Interaction with professionals F. Student Support and Guidance Each cohort of the course is allocated a Course Co-ordinator who acts as a liaison between the students and school management and provides support for academic management of the course. G. Attendance Requirements Attendance as per National Skills Development Programme (NSDP) & Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC) requirements. H. Credit System The course is equivalent to 3 credits. I. 4 J. Award Classification For the award of the short course certificate in Camera & Lighting, students will have to score at least 40% on assessments. 5 Part II - Course Structure & Outline L. Camera & Lighting Full Time (Version 1.0) Session Topics 1 Introduction to Camera & Lighting Module. Role of different crew members in the team Planning for motion, understanding the preproduction, production and post production phases 2 Types of shots used as referred by the film grammar: Wide shot, Full shot, Medium shot. Character shots namely: close ups. Over the shoulder, Cut aways, connecting shots, amongst others. Purpose and review of these different shots. Camera Movement pan, dolly, tilt Review part of movies and use the proper film grammar to describe the scenes. Practical: Using Camera/ DSLR or Mobile Phone to produce different types of shots required. 3 Application of Design Principles: Rule of Third, perspective, colour, tone, shape, rythm, space, surface division. Composition rules for people Practical: Shoot a video footage with the Design Principles in consideration (Use Mobile phone if required.) 4 Understanding the camera. CMOS vs CCD. Crop Factor, lenses, Format, color space. Prime lenses vs zoom lenses, angle of view, Cine Lenses v/s DSLR Lenses, T- Stop v/s F-stop Review of different cameras features and settings. Practical: review the different features present in DSLR and Cine Cameras. Review the bit depth of the cameras. Hands on Experience with the Camera. 5 Understanding Exposure: Creative use of aperture, depth of field, focus settings, color temperature and white balance Working with a Light meter Application and use of Filters ND & graduated ND and big stopper. Practical: Operation of a professional HDV camera and related gears like Lens, Filter, Use Light meter to help set proper exposure. Checklist required before shooting. 6 Supportive gears and techniques used for video camera work such as tracks, dollies, shoulder holder, tripod / monopod, Jibs & Crane. Stabilizers / Gimbals. Motorized 3D Gimbals. Techniques to set up the various equipment, safety and precautions Practical: Plan a series of shots and shoot short videos using Dolly, Shoulder Holder, Tripod and Jib / crane. 7 Overview of Sound Recording 16-bit / 24-bit. Sound propagation, sound reflection, sound absorption and background noise. Advanced techniques of sound recording with camera work. Use of the different types of microphones (condenser, dynamic, stereo, shotgun, lav). Use of accessories to improve audio recording (windshield. Boom pole, grips), external Recorders. Background noise print and removal technique. Use of Headphones. SCCLv1.0 / Nov 2017 Page 5 of 6

6 Practical: Record voice over and audio using camera microphone. Connect XLR Microphone and record sound. Perform recording using a using an external lavalier microphone 8 Assessment (Class Test) 9 Acquiring Audio in post production. Apply noise reduction techniques. Acquiring audio directly in post-production as voice over. Noise reduction using captured noise print. Practical: Hands on practice using Video cameras 10 Lighting: Natural v/s Artificial lighting. Identifying the direction of light. Soft and harsh light Different lighting positions available. Working with Natural light, use of diffusers and reflectors. Practical: Shooting outside using diffusers, reflectors and light stands to create soft shadow. 11 Working with artificial lighting, types of artificial lights available, color temperature. Power consumption of the lighting, safety and precautions when handling the lights. Working with 3 point lighting. Using artificial light with natural light as fill. Proper setting up of lighting when working with greenscreens. Use of lighting gears like c-stands, colored gels and filters. Practical: Setting up and lighting of a green screen. 12 Legal aspects, copyright and permissions when dealing with Photography / Video. Model Release, property release. In Class Exercise: Prepare model release and Property release samples. Practical: Aerial Photography and use of Drones. Assist in the process of planning a drone flight, operating a drone and using video from drone for Post Production. 13 Overview of the Post production phase. Shot assembly, transitions and effects using Adobe Premiere Pro. Overview of Color grading. Practical: Perform a Video recording using RAW format. Applying Look Up table (LUT) when recording and previewing of video 14 Practical: Working on a short video project 15 Practical: Submission of assignment, presentation and review of student s project.
