Page 10 of 48 5 Results 5.1 Proofing substrate colour and gloss The various paper types were evaluated against TAPPI gloss [7] using a System Lehmann gloss measuring equipment. In addition the coloration was measured [6]. The aim values for gloss and substrate colour are given Table 9. Proof substrate type L* a* b* a Gloss Unit : Glossy white > 60 2: Semi-matte white : Matte white < 20 Tolerance - ± 2 ± 2 - Table 9: Aim values for gloss and colour of proofing substrates [3]. a informative only because of lack of inter-instrument agreement caused by different UV characteristics.

Page 11 of 48 Table 10 depicts the gloss measurements on areas without paper simulation. Based on the classification in Table 9 [ Glossy, Semimatte and Matte ] every digital proofing paper could be classified. If the final production stock is known than a proofing substrate should simulate that substrate to a high degree. In case of the GMG NewsPaper 76 and according to ISO the colorimetrical tolerances (minimum CIEL* and ±2 for CIEa* and CIEb*) will be applied to the aim values for standard newsprint stipulated in ISO namely CIELAB = 85,2; 0,9; 5,2 (white backing). The colour measurements of the unprinted substrates are shown in Table 11. The coloration of all proofing substrates (ProofPaper) are in conformance with the specified values [8] The GMG NewsPaper 76 substrate is only suited for proofs aiming to simulate standard newsprinting.

Page 13 of Permanence and light fastness of the proofing substrates The unprinted proofing substrates have been evaluated against permanence and light fastness according to [8]. Here each paper was subjected sequentially to the following conditions: 24 hours at 25 C and a relative humidity of 25 % 24 hours at 40 C and a relative humidity of 80 % 7 days at 40 C and a relative humidity of 10 %. For the same proofing substrate, the variability of colour under light exposure is limited by the condition that the light fastness as determined according to ISO shall be no less than 3. 17 Page 17 of Drift of the solids RGB and CMYK [Fading] In order to measure the fading of the solids, the proofs were measured colorimetrically at a series of elapsed time intervals [5 min, 10 min, 20 min, 30, 45 min, 60 min, 120 min and 24 h]. It is good prepress practice that no image parts need to rely on tone values outside of the tone value reproduction limits of the production printing process, see the pertinent part of ISO for this information. The printed tints intermediate between the (simulated) substrate white and solid shall transfer onto each print in a consistent and uniform manner over a tone value range that includes at least the tone reproduction limits of the printing condition to be simulated. This has been checked visually using the ISO Evaluation Testform.

The resolving power of each proof print shall be such that C, M, K positive, nonserif type of 2 point size, reverse [negative] of 8 point size and 2 point reverse line are legibly reproduced [8]. Also the Siemens stars of ISO have been checked. This test was carried out using the test form 3. The results are listed in Table 26. All information was printed on the evaluated proofs Tone value difference The digital proof print shall reproduce the colorimetrical tone values given by the intended printing condition. Though the tone values are calculated using the method in ISO both from the CIEXYZ values of the proof and the CIEXYZ values of the intended printing condition. For all combinations the tone value difference shall be within a tolerance of ±5%. The differences for each combination are shown in Figure 1 to 8.

Page 30 of PDF/X compatibility A proofing system should accept and process PDF/X-files compliant to the PDF/X specifications [informative criteria of ISO ]. This was tested using the FograCert PDF/X Output test form [4]. The tested proofing system showed a compliant output. Therefore one can expect PDF/X1a and PDF/X-3 files to be accepted and processed correctly by the tested proofing system. 6 Printer family test In addition to the FograCert Contract Proofing programme different printer models have been evaluated in the light of similar output accuracy. Based on a specified proofing paper and control means (driving the printer in the pertinent print mode) different printer models are subject of colorimetrical evaluation against the printing condition FOGRA39 within tight tolerances. The following families have been scrutinized: ID Printer manufacturer 1 Epson 2 Epson Printer models of a family Epson 4880, Epson 7880, Epson 9880 Epson 4800, Epson 7800, Epson 9800 Proofing paper semimatte 250 semimatte 250 Table 27: Printer families to be tested. 31 Page 31 of 48 Once a similar output has been shown a certification can be extended by the tested printer models without explicit checking of the entire system combination. The similarity (closeness between the printer models) will be defined here by the 95% percentile of the tone value patches of the ISO target of each printer to be tested against FOGRA39 by halving the tightest tolerance representing high quality industry practice. Though the CIELAB colour difference for the paper simulation ΔE=3 [8] have been used. In case these tolerances will be met the end user can be assured that the printer models out of the tested family can be used interchangeably. Practically this means that the same aim values can be used for calibration. Results: 95% Quantile OK? [Tol.: ΔE <= 1,5] Epson ,0 OK Epson ,9 OK Epson ,1 OK Table 29: CIELAB colour difference for the best 95% tone value patches Family Epson x % Quantil OK? [Tol.: ΔE <= 1,5] Epson ,0 OK Epson ,1 OK Epson ,8 OK Table 30: CIELAB colour difference for the best 95% tone value patches Family Epson x800.

Page 32 of 48 In addition and for information only the colorimetrical differences between each proof print and the average have been evaluated. The results are depicted in the tables 31 and 32 where the individual measurements have been compared against the average taken from the three IT8/7.4 test charts. 95% Quantile Max. Colour difference Mean colour difference Epson ,4 1,1 0,2 Epson ,4 1,3 0,2 Epson ,5 2,3 (99% Quantil = 0,8) 0,3 Table 31: Statistical evaluation of the proof prints compared to the mean Family Epson x % Quantile with respect to the mean Max. colour difference with respect to the mean average colour difference with respect to the mean Epson ,5 1,6 0,3 Epson ,9 2,4 0,5 Epson ,9 2,1 0,6 Table 32: Statistical evaluation of the proof prints compared to the mean Family Epson x800. It could be shown that the tolerance have been met satisfactorily. Thus for each compliant system combination it can be stated that the here tested printer models, using the same calibration means and proofing paper, can be used interchangeable.

Page 33 of 48 7 Conclusion The configurations listed in Table 33 were subject to this certification: Printing condition Software Proof printer 1 FOGRA39 GMG ColorProof 04 Epson FOGRA39 GMG ColorProof 04 Epson IFRA26 GMG ColorProof 04 Epson FOGRA39 GMG ColorProof 04 Epson FOGRA29 GMG ColorProof 04 Epson FOGRA39 GMG ColorProof 04 HP Z IFRA26 GMG ColorProof 04 HP Z FOGRA29 GMG ColorProof 04 HP Z2100 Table 33: Tested configurations. Proofing substrate matte 140 gloss 250 GMG NewsPaper 76 matte 140 semimatte 250 gloss 250 GMG NewsPaper 76 gloss 250 All configurations have been positively tested according to the Fogra Contract Proofing System criteria: Proofing substrate colour and gloss Permanence and light fastness Colour accuracy [Gamut included] Drift of the solids CMYK and RGB Homogeneity Short- and long-term repeatability Rub resistance [drying] Tone value reproduction limits and reproduction of vignettes Image register and resolving power Margin information Tone value difference PDF/X-compatibility

Page 34 of 48 The evaluation of the Ugra/Fogra Media Wedge CMYK 2 has shown for all configurations that the proofing software GMG ColorProof 04 produce proofs that comply with the listed printing conditions. For the configurations where FOGRA39 has been simulated a purchaser of these systems can be sure that other printing conditions that have smaller colour gamuts [e.g. FOGRA28] will be equally well simulated, however the appropriate simulation of the printing stock gloss will need to be taken into account. The proofing systems GMG ColorProof 04 as tested therefore fulfils all criteria of the FograCert Contract Proofing system programme. Fogra Graphic Technology Research Association Dipl.-Ing. A. 35 Annex provided by GMG Page 35 of 48 Annex A In the following appendix the procedure will be described exemplarily for the HP Z2100. The detailed description can be found in the tutorial GMG-ColorProof_HowTo_AutoCaliWizard_en.pdf. The calibration of other printers, e. g. Epson 4880 can be found in the manual GMG-ColorProof_Tutorial_PrinterCalibration_en.pdf. 1. Calibration 1.1 Introduction This tutorial will walk you through a printer calibration utilizing the GMG ColorProof software. The HP Designjet Z2100 printer generation has a build in measurement device. The step by step documentation below will use this internal device. 1.2 Basics The GMG printer calibration is saved with the mx3 file format. It describes a defined and reproducible standard color behavior. It includes the definition of printer, paper and ink combination. Based on this color definition it is possible at any given point in time to compensate for eventually accruing color variations with a calibration cycle in GMG ColorProof. This ensures a stable, reproducible production of contract proofs. The time interval for a calibration cycle depends on following factors: o Printer type: used inkjet technology o Climate conditions: variation in humidity and or temperature o Ink or media change GMG recommends a daily verification of the calibration. A calibration cycle should be done after every media or ink change. Please be aware that depending on the printer technology, it might need a couple of prints after the change of the ink cartridge until the new ink is actually used at the print head.

Annex provided by GMG Page 36 of 48 Every mx3 calibration is based on certain printer settings, like resolution, print mode, ink configuration, paper type etc. Additional information can be found at Printercalibrations.pdf in the folder C:\ColorProof \Printers or on the GMG support webpage Testcharts For Printercalibrations the GMG Testchart TC3 is used in general. The layout depends on the used measurement device. In this case, the GMG HP-TC3-24.tif test chart will be used. It contains 522 color combinations, which will be measured with the internal spectrophotometer. 1.4 Automatic calibration of the HP Designjet Z2100 The calibration of the HP DesignJet Z2100 is very comfortable integrated in the GMG ColorProof application. After initially setting up the printer it can be calibrated fully automated via one click of a button or scheduled with a timer. Printer settings: The tolerances for automatic calibration only need to be defined once.
