Sunlight heats up the surfaces of colored exterior polymers, which can raise the overall temperature of the system. 5 Reduced surface temperatures Solar energy is absorbed by exterior polymer surfaces causing them to heat-up and become uncomfortable to touch and use. The heat absorbed by the surface can also cause the polymer to expand which can cause failures in some systems. Darker colors tend to be more susceptible to these problems. One of the best ways to reduce this heat build-up effect is to reflect away solar rays. 6 What is solar reflectance? The sun s energy reaches earth as a combination of visible light that allows us to see color, infrared wavelengths that cause most heating, and ultraviolet rays. When the sun s energy is absorbed by polymer surfaces, heat build-up occurs. The largest contribution to a structure s internal heat gain is from infrared rays. We have designed ALTIRIS pigments to reflect away solar energy, specifically the heat-generating infrared energy.
