2 CHAIRPERSONS S REPORT APRIL 2017 Dear members The judges at our April club evening loved the set subject entries (obvious manipulation). We had a lot of laughs and often were at a loss for words. Well done to all those who entered I thought the standard was very high. We intend having more workshops where members are encouraged to produce creative/artistic images. Ari will be holding a series of Photoshop workshops soon and once we have finalized dates, we will notify you. There will be a moderate charge for these workshops. The set subject for May is panning in colour. I would like to remind you that the bikers will be visiting the coast from 27 th to 30 th April 2017 and this will offer numerous opportunities to practice your panning, as well as exciting photo opportunities. You need to register online to gain an entry permit. Please refer to page 11 for entry details. Please refer to page 8 on how to do panning. I would like to remind you that our salon will be closing on 13 th May This does not leave much time to prepare your images, so I urge you to make a start. We have categories to suit all our members, namely, wildlife, macro, scapes, sport, open, (all in colour) and open mono. We are also holding a print section, in colour and mono in the open categories. Please make sure you read the rules carefully as you do not want to go to the expense of having your images printed and then have them disqualified. You may enter up to 6 prints per category and they must be mounted and labeled. The minimum size of the prints is 210 X 300 (approx. A4) and maximum size 305 X 400(approx. A3). The maximum size including the mount is 400 X 500mm. The Hibiscus Coast Photographic Society member that receives the most acceptances in this salon will be awarded a medal, so good luck to all of you. Many members have approached me about manipulation of images. Jill Sneesby, our PSSA president has summarized the definition by saying the following the definition includes: adding, moving or removing any item is manipulation. However, while methods such as dodging, burning etc. are allowed, if the author dodges or burns sections of the image to such an extent that an item can no longer be seen, then that is manipulation. So, be cautious salon directors are asking for original images on a regular basis now. Rather enter your image in a category where manipulation is allowed. Our next meeting will be held on 3 rd May 2017 and I look forward to seeing you there. Enjoy your photography and above all, be careful. 3 BEST IMAGES Best 1 star: Vic Falls at sunset Carlien Oberholzer I took my other half to the Vic Falls as a birthday present and of-course took the opportunity to take a few snaps too :). On arrival at the Mosi-oa-Tunya national park we realized that we weren't going to be able to shoot at sunset as the park closes to visitors about an hour prior. Big sad face I managed to twist the arm of one of the park officials who had enough to do in the office and was allowed to stay an extra hour. So now having the mighty Falls to myself I was amped and ready waiting for the sun to start fading. Roughly estimating where the light would fall as I knew where the sun would set, I chose my location and set the camera up framed by the foliage on the path. I cranked my aperture all the way to F22, had to because there was still just too much light and I only had a neutral density filter of 3 stops. As soon as I saw those golden orange pinks in the sky and reflecting in the water I adjusted my settings accordingly and fired my shot at 10 seconds to get that smooth flow of the water. Further basic adjustments were made in Lightroom and Photoshop. Camera - my old trusty Nikon D5200 Focal length - 38mm Aperture: F25 Exposure: 10 seconds Used a 3 stop ND Filter Best 2 star & Best Junior: Natures Child Tanya Nadauld Natures Child - Nature is within us all. 4 Best 3 star: Home just before sunset Malcolm Sutton I wanted some photographs of seashore birds and identified a flock of about 40 Kelp Gulls over-nighting at the mouth of the Mpenjati Estuary. To get the kind of images I envisaged I needed a mainly clear late afternoon sky and the wind from a westerly direction (North West would have been ideal but South West, which was far more likely, was okay). This would give me the ocean as background when the sun was at my back, and the birds taking off and landing into the wind, would be facing slightly towards me. The weather forecast and actual conditions mid-afternoon on the 31st March 2017 looked promising, so I set myself up. As happens, things didn't go as planned, and some cloud on the horizon masked the late sun. However, by increasing the ISO (1600) I was still able to set a fast shutter speed (1/3200 s) and reduce the aperture somewhat (f/10), so as to keep some sense of the ocean. An advantage of the cloud was that the soft light enabled greater definition of the birds' feathers and without any shadows. For this image I combined three photographs illustrating the landing process. Best 4 star: Graceful launch Rhona Sellschop Taken from a hide at Zimanaga in very low late afternoon light, I was using a Nikon D800 with an mm lens on 400mm. I chose the daring speed of 1250th of a second in the hopes that I could capture the more static head and beak of the bird in a frozen position while showing the speed at which the wings operate. The wide aperture of 5.6 was the best available with ISO at 1000 because of the poor light. Quicklinks - Chair Report Best images Set Subjects Next SS Bike Weekend Birthdays Back to Contents 4

5 Best 5 star: Red bishop take off Henry Oppel Best Master Bronze & Best Senior: Ship leaving Kathy Kay I did not have a tripod with me, so used a branch of a tree to steady my camera. I set my camera to manual with the shutter speed at 1/10 second. Any slower would have resulted in blurring of the ship. ISO at 160 and fstop set to 18. Camera was a Nikon D3S and lens Nikon 24 to 70. Quicklinks - Chair Report Best images Set Subjects Next SS Bike Weekend Birthdays Back to Contents 5

7 NEXT MONTH S SET SUBJECT: PANNING by Kathy Kay (APSSA) One of the main reasons for learning the technique of panning is so that you end up with a moving subject relatively sharp but with a blurred background. This gives a feeling of movement and speed. The best way to do this is to slow down your shutter speed to anything between 1/8 and 1/60. The slower your shutter speed, the more chance of camera shake, so if possible, use a tripod with a swiveling head or a monopod. Make sure there is no obstruction in front of your subject and take note of the background. Usually, single colour or plain backgrounds work best. As the subject approaches, track it with your camera. Ensure that you smoothly follow the speed of the subject in a gliding motion. Set your camera on auto focus tracking and half press the shutter to keep the subject in focus. After you release the shutter, continue with the follow - through to ensure the motion blur is smooth. Any moving subject will do try to be as creative as possible. Quicklinks - Chair Report Best images Set Subjects Next SS Bike Weekend Birthdays Back to Contents 7

8 If you find you are unable to get your shutter speed down low because of bright light, try increasing your fstop and/or adding a neutral density filter to the front of your lens. This could slow the speed down considerably. Also, set your ISO as low as possible to further slow the shutter speed down. I hope this helped get your creative juices flowing. Good luck and be safe.
