1 Photo Walks: Green Back Yard to Old Fletton Along the Outskirts is a project by artist Marc Atkinson to reflect on the landscape along the peripheries of the City of Peterborough. The project will culminate in an exhibition of new video and photography work in the group show Resident at City Gallery (Mid July-August 2016). Most cities share a complex and evolving dialectic between the rural and the urban. Through the project, the project will explore this dialectic and suggest the alternative notions and experiences of our cities, whose identities are usually formed from fixed centre based perspectives. The project aims to highlight the complexity and evolution of our modern landscape by documenting and tracing the outskirts and edges of the city of Peterborough. It can be argued that there is an increased urgency in the current climate, to explore, document and highlight these uncharted areas as they are continually re-constructed through the effects of urban sprawl, environmental change, government policies and increased geographic mobility. Please fill out the contact sheet and I will contact you with the dropbox link to send your photos for the day. These will be displayed in the fieldwork room of the Resident exhibition at City Gallery from mid July to the end of August. 1
2 You might like to consider the following ideas when thinking of scenes to photograph. The juxtaposition of old and new, evidence of past human activity, the out of place. The borderline between the man-made and the natural, encroaching nature, decay, rebirth. Landscape Photography Tips Use a Tripod Not only will a tripod give you level shots, but it will also slow down your thinking to make you compose your shot. (Digital Level) Ideally we want to use a low iso so as not to create digital noise/grain. Shutter speed Alongside the small aperture for wide depth of field we will need to use a slow shutter speed to let in more light. Without a tripod this will cause camera shake. Try not to let the shutter speed drops below 1/30sec or you ll need to put the camera on a tripod, White Balance Make sure you have the right white balance setting for the conditions (Such as sunny or cloudy rather than auto) This will enable you to get the correct colour balance. Wide-angle lens Consider using a wide-angle lens like an 18mm or 24mm. A 35mm adds a little wide angle Focusing (Hyperfocal point) Largely you are aiming for a wide depth of field (see DOF Sheet) where the foreground and background are both sharp. You will need a relatively small aperture. There are hyperfocal distance tables, which can calculate the prime point of focus; alternatively this can be approximated as around one-third into the scene. 2
3 Foreground interest/lead in lines Including elements in the foreground can break up an image and create areas of interest for the viewer. When we look at a scene we tend to seek out details with our eyes and we manage to ignore uninteresting areas. However, dull, featureless foregrounds act like a barrier in an image, they make it feel like you re too far away from the point of interest. Including something of interest in the foreground can quite easily rectify this situation. Light Try to photograph when there is interesting light and weather. The Golden hour (early morning late afternoon) or around the time of a storm/rain can create interesting light or cloud formations. Remember to use a lens hood unless you like lens flare. Shoot Raw Use an ND Filter or graduated ND Filter The sky is often brighter than the land so using a graduated ND filter can help you get a well-balanced image. A standard ND Filter or polarising can also create subtle tints and interesting effects Preperation Clean your lens/sensor Bring a cloth, blower or brush and check your lens regularly. Try not to change lens outdoors! An extra Battery A tripod relevant to the weather conditions Composition This is a matter of taste however you may wish to centralize, offset or use the rule of thirds when considering your composition. 3
4 The Rule of thirds - This simple rule splits the scene into three equally sized columns and three equally sized rows, creating a grid of nine rectangles. Locating key elements within the scene along these lines, or at their intersections can really improve composition. Many cameras have a rule of thirds grid view option available on the LCD Lead in Lines This might be a patch of flowers, a few boulders or shells on a beach, for example, and it works especially well when this interest leads off towards the main view. The idea is to have something of interest in the near, middle and far distance of the image. Break the rules! Try unusual angles, Crouch down, climb somethi ng. Put your camera out of focus. Undere xpose. Overexpose. 4
