Why is this section included? In Photoshop and with Layers, Burn & Dodge can be even more useful because it can also help to bring light and shadow to flat images with the purpose of creating depth and increasing tonal contrast to create a more interesting photo This is not so different from levels or curves except that you are not applying the changes to the whole image, you are applying them only to the places you paint with brushes. Selectively adjusting the brightness and darkness of your image

Several ways to apply burn/dodge effect Use the burn/dodge tools in the toolbar on a separate layer with the option to dial back opacity if changes are too great Use an Overlay 50% grey layer this is something I recently learned how to do and I love this technique; the precision and control is amazing Precise with Wacom tablet It s like painting with light and shadow Total control over the look of the image Changeable able to edit by changing brush color This special use of burn and dodge techniques can improve your image in several ways: To improve the exposure (dynamic range) and bring out details To direct your viewers eye through creative highlights and shadows Create impact by adding dramatic highlight and shadow
Range: One of the most important setting that is often ignored. Range determines which pixels will be affected Highlights light areas Midtones middle areas Shadows dark areas Tip: You will mostly use highlights for dodging and shadows for burning In most applications, the key to being effective is subtlety. You will create more impact if your viewer is unable to detect the changes. Use 3 9% to achieve this and use repeated sweeps with an appropriate sized, soft brush to achieve your effect Changes are more gradual Slower paced Requires patience Huge payoff if done correctly
Burn tool with soft brush with a low exposure Dodge tool with soft brush with a low exposure Sponge tool in same settings allow localized saturation and desaturation of colors

To Create Burn/Dodge Layer -Alt + New Layer -Name your layer if you wish -Set Mode to Overlay -Click Fill with Overlay-neutral
The new layer is transparent with the mode set to Overlay Overlay is part of the contrast group in blend modes Any area lighter than 50% grey will brighten the image Darker than 50% grey will darken 50% grey will be transparent To paint on the layer, select the brush tool or B shortcut Select black or white and set the opacity from 10% - 15% Paint the overlay layer to lighten or darken the image
Tip: Lighten areas you want to focus: focal objects, faces, eyes, highlights, etc Darken areas you want to defocus: background object, distractions, flat tonal areas, not-so-black blacks Note: Excessive burn/ dodge can change the colors of the image which can be corrected in a hue adjustment layer and only select the problem areas

Summary - What I d like you to take away Layers Layers allow for total control over an image by allowing nondestructive edits and save points throughout the edit process. Combined with the ability to be transferred to a separate project thus saving time with the advantage of being changed later Layers Masks Masks further increase the usefulness of layers by providing a way to selectively turn on & turn off the layer over different parts of your image Blend Modes Give layers different ways for layers to interact with one another, providing new looks and saving significant time Burn & Dodge While useful on it own, when combined on a layer provides unprecedented control to paint in light and shadow onto your image to create your desired mood or effect as well as direct the viewer s eye toward and away from areas of your image
Questions? Comments? So far I ve discussed HDR, Photomatix, Texturizing, Layers, Masks, Burn/Dodge: Where would you like me to go next? What would you like to learn about? This presentation will be available online in.pdf form:
