Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 3/26 1 General Provisions 1.1 The Standard applies to organic and combined painting systems used as anticorrosion protection of external surfaces of both existing and designed equipment and structures made of steel, aluminium and galvanised steel sheets exposed to the aggressive atmosphere of individual production plants of our company. 1.2 Mondi Štětí, a.s. Standard is based on the standard ČSN EN ISO through The anticorrosion protection Standard specifies: method of specification of painting systems, conditions for application of painting systems, requirements for quality of painting systems, requirements for service life of painting systems, conditions of the inter-operational and acceptance inspection of painting systems, conditions under which repairs and renovations of painting systems are to be carried out, conditions under which painting materials should be stored, special conditions that have to be included in the contracts with the suppliers, conditions for safety of work during application of painting systems. The Standard also contains specifications of the used materials and all related standards and regulations as amended. 1.4 The Standard is binding for all departments of the company and external companies that prepare technical documentation for structures and equipment, design, ensure or produce a painting system for Mondi Štětí, a.s. 1.5 A painting system for the conditions that are not mentioned in the Standard are to be approved and potentially proposed by the corrosion technician. 1.6 All changes and exceptions from this Standard are to be permitted and approved by the corrosion technician. 2 Corrosion Aggressiveness Classification 2.1 Corrosion aggressiveness of the atmosphere in Mondi Štětí, a.s. is determined in accordance with ČSN EN ISO to the level 4 to 5.
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 4/26 3 Specification of Painting Systems 3.1 Painting system selection When selecting the most suitable painting system, it is necessary to know all specific properties of the structure that should be painted in such a detailed way as possible and all requirements for the protective painting system: Position and type of structure Usable methods of surface preparation in order to achieve the required level of cleanness and potential selection of protective measures General impact of weather effects or potential weather effects in the period of paint application Various restrictions, e.g. time restrictions, effects of surroundings Resistance to operational effects to which the structure will be exposed Final appearance of surface protection colour shade, gloss, smoothness, possibility of cleaning, colour fastness, resistance to chalking Painting system service life Possibility of painting system maintenance 3.2 The specification of painting systems forms an integral part of the technical documentation and production background documents. Painting system specification should contain the data as follows: Product name with identification of technical documentation (it is not stated if the regulation is given directly in the drawing or bill of materials) Surface preparation before painting, number and thickness of individual layers, total thickness of the complete system, types of used paints, colour shades Correction painting system (if it is different from the specified one). This system should have the same protective value like the basic system. 4 Requirements for Surface Finishing 4.1 Appearance of the substrate surface designated for painting: Before preparation of the surface to be painted, it is necessary to check whether: the surface is free of residues of welding flux, welding balls, slag and residues of penetrants welds that are not satisfactory because of poor surface quality should be modified sharp protrusions, edges and corners should be rounded to a radius of 2 mm burrs and surface defects (scales, doubling etc.) should be removed
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 5/ General principles for constructional and technical design: to allow access for application, maintenance and inspection of quality of the painting system in all stages to eliminate or restrict the places that are in particular exposed to corrosion such as leaking closed hollow spaces, channels, pockets by selection of suitable position of cross section and combining their sets to select a constructional solution with the surface exposed to aggressive atmosphere as small as possible, to use simple non-complex shapes to restrict or eliminate sharp edges, joints, gaps, overlaps, hollows, depressions trapping condensed or leaking water and dirt, to ensure discharge of accidentally penetrated water to completely eliminate use of interrupted welds that are not applied along the complete perimeter. It is always necessary to use continuous and all-perimeter welds to secure outlets of technological waste lines so that they could not reach up to steel structure to secure that inaccessible surfaces of steel structures on which the complete system of protection cannot be applied after assembly are provided with the complete system of protection already before assembly The designed structure should comply will all the basic rules of ČSN EN ISO through We distinguish the following types of steel surface according to the level of damage by corrosion (pictorial annexe of ČSN ISO ): A scales, non-corroded B scales, corroded on approximately 50% of area C corroded on 100% of the area with presence of a thin layer of rust D corroded on 100% of area with presence of corrosion in layers or depression corrosion
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 6/ Identification of surface cleaning grades: Blasting: Sa 3 blasting in order to reach uniform metallic appearance Sa 2 1/2 very thorough blasting with traces of shading caused by impurities Sa 2 thorough surface blasting Sa 1 light surface blasting Manual cleaning: St3 very thorough machine surface preparation St2 thorough manual surface preparation PSt2 thorough manual preparation of already painted surfaces PSt3 very thorough machine preparation of already painted surfaces 4.5 Specified surface finishing: All new structures, tank external shells and new equipment (surface A, B, C, D) must be blasted to the Sa 2 1/2 level before painting. In case of repairs of paints, surfaces should be cleaned to the level of at least St 3 if it is not possible to prepare surface by blasting In case of repairs of paints, surfaces should be cleaned by blasting to the level of Sa 2 1/2. Surfaces with the level of corrosion damage A and B cannot be cleaned manually; they should be blasted to the level of Sa 2 1/2. Surfaces contaminated with substances soluble in water (cement dust, flying salts, soluble parts of rust etc.) should be washed with sufficient amount of water (warm in the best case) and dried before cleaning. Surface preparation before painting should be carried out in accordance with ČSN ISO Conditions for Application of a Painting System 5.1 Cleaning Dirt soluble in water should be removed with water or steam. Degreasing is a separate operation that is included in the surface preparation only if it is necessary. Thick layers of grease dirt are to be removed mechanically (with scraper), surfaces should be washed with detergent, rinsed with water and dried. Surfaces are to be degreased before blasting (grease reduces effects of blasting); in case of manual or mechanical cleaning, degreasing is the last
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 7/26 operation before painting. Smear and grease, oils, products of temporary anticorrosion protection and chalk marks should be removed using degreasing agents, solvents or other suitable preparations. Degreasing should comply with the standards and hygienic requirements valid in the Czech Republic. When blasting with silicon sand, it is necessary to reduce the quantity of flying products arising at blasting as much as possible. Blasting within a free area may be carried out only in case of covering the blasted item with sheets that prevent any escape of sand dust and corrosion products. Spraying systems eliminating dustiness should be installed in the places that cannot be sealed completely. 5.2 Climatic conditions In order to prevent in creating condensation moisture, surfaces should be dry and the material temperature should be at least 3 C higher than dew point temperature. When making paints (blasting, applying, drying) within a free area, the temperature at applying and drying should range between +15 and +30 C and max. relative humidity should be 75%. Paint should not be applied in frost, snow, fog, strong wind etc. Surfaces exposed to direct sunshine can be painted only if they are diverted or shaded. Suitable climatic conditions during application of paints should be observed for the complete period of paint application and drying. Application of paints in external conditions is not allowed in the period from October 15 to March 15. Paints can be applied in heated rooms only or it is necessary to ensure suitable conditions by erection of a tent with heating. 5.3 Application of coats Primer should be applied on the prepared (blasted, manually cleaned) surface as soon as possible in order that the dirt created (such as corrosion products, impurities etc.) could not affect coat service life negatively. Because of formation of instantaneous corrosion, the prime paint should be applied within 4 hours after surface cleaning. The corrosion technician can extend this period to 8 hours max. in very favourable climatic conditions. Before applying the primer on the blasted surface, not only the surface but also complete scaffolding including boards should be cleaned from dust and sand. When applying primer, paint is applied in strips at first edges, corners and uneasily accessible surfaces such as holes for screws are painted and only then straight and easily accessible surfaces are painted.
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 8/26 All priming paints should always be applied using a brush or by spraying. Exceptions can be allowed by the corrosion technician if the regulations of the manufacturer of paints allow so. Use of a roller is unacceptable. It is necessary to ensure that the painting system cannot be contaminated with dust, solutions, mud, mortar, oils etc. during application (or drying). If any painted surface becomes soiled, it should be cleaned before application of another layer. It is recommended to apply a consequent coat as soon as possible. If the top paint is not applied within 1 month upon application of the primer, or if the primer is damaged, it is necessary to restore it before application of another coat, i.e. to blast it to Sa 2 1/2 again (in accordance with ČSN ISO ) and to apply the required layer again. If regulations of of the manufacturer of paints allow so, the primer can be repainted in accordance with the interval specified in technical data sheets. Top paints are to be applied using the specified method, e.g. using a brush, roller, pneumatic spraying or spraying without air or even in an electric field. It is necessary to observe e.g. instructions for storage, mixing, range of acceptable temperatures for processing, waiting times, drying conditions and other parameters. Painting materials with high zinc content should be stirred continuously during application in order to avoid the metallic content settling on the vessel bottom. A thicker painting material film than a double of the specified nominal thickness is generally unacceptable. It is necessary to observe the rule for minimum thickness. It means that the smallest acceptable thickness may not be lower than 80% of the nominal value and the number of values under the nominal one should not exceed 20% of the measured values. Average thickness should always be equal or higher than the nominal one and this rule applies to all layers of the painting system. Painting systems with a thickness exceeding 160 m should be applied in more than two layers of different colour shades. Colour distinguishing of individual layers of paint is specified both for better application and for acceptance inspection. It is important to select the shades that can be covered easily with a colour shade of the consequent layer. The working team head (foreman, ganger) is responsible for complying with all conditions for painting system application. Inspections and records in the installation logbook are carried out by the authorised persons of behalf of the supplier, customer and by the corrosion technician.
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 9/26 If it is not possible to observe the mentioned parameters (weather, emissions etc.), the working team head should interrupt work and notify such fact to the authorised representative of the customer. The authorised representative of the customer and the corrosion technician have the right to interrupt work if a breach of technological conditions for paint application is discovered. Painting companies have the duty to record description of climatic conditions, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point in the site diary at least three times a day (it is recommended to record the values at the start of works 7:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and if weather change occurs). The areas that will be inaccessible after installation in the final position should be provided with a complete coat before positioning in this final position. Embedded fixtures covered with concrete should be blasted and painted with a primer in the depth of at least 100 mm under the assumed concrete surface before positioning in the final position. Pull rods will not be provided with paint. 5.4 Damage of coats by welding If it is possible, the surface that is to be welded should not be provided with any coat. If the substrate is painted, coat should ground or removed using another method before welding. Damaged areas should be provided with the original specified complete coat like the whole steel structure or with a correction painting system after welding. Paint is applied on assembly welds in steps. The first layer is applied in the distance of at least 150 mm from the weld and each consequent offset by 50 mm. 5.5 Mechanical damage Coat damages caused during transport and assembly should be corrected with the original specified complete coat like the whole steel structure including the same preparation or with a correction painting system. 6 Requirements for Quality of the Completed Painting System It should correspond to the specified technological procedure, i.e. from the viewpoint of surface preparation before application, number of layers, thickness, differentiation of shades of individual layers and final colour shade of paints and types of used materials. Quality of the used materials should comply with the respective standards or technical conditions.
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 10/26 Paints should be applied uniformly and well spread in all parts of the painted surfaces including corners, edges etc. They should have uniform appearance and gloss in accordance with the original specification. Each layer should have continuous appearance without visible drops, blisters, curtains and drapes, waviness, cracks and peeled spots and other defects. Each layer should have a different colour shade. The primer should have a different colour than metallic silver (paints with high Zn content represent an exception). They should be applied uniformly and well spread in all parts of the painted surfaces including corners, edges etc. Paint should not be contaminated with dust and other mechanical dirt adhering to wet paint or even incorporated in the paint. Double thickness of the dry paint layer other than the nominal (specified) thickness is unacceptable. Test of adhesion is carried out according to ČSN ISO 2409 approximate measuring is carried out using a grid test. Tearing test of adhesion in accordance with ČSN EN ISO 4624 is considered to be demonstrative. The values of adhesion below 1.5 MPa are considered to be unsatisfactory. Porosity of coats is to be specified in accordance with DIN for systems for storage of liquids. 7 Requirements for Service Life of Painting Systems 7.1 Service life of painting systems is the period after which the extent of its functional damage achieves 50% of the painting system area. The following cases are considered to be functional damage: corrosion of the painting system, spontaneous peeling of layers (or complete painting system), in case of combined painting systems, also damage of paint leading to exposure of the metallic layer. 7.2 The supplier provides guarantee for the quality of application of a painting system. The guarantee should be defined precisely in a contract. The minimum guarantee period should not be shorter than 18 months in case of manual cleaning and 36 months for blasted surfaces. Checking inspections of surface
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 11/26 protections to which the supplier of the surface protection is also invited are carried out during the guarantee period. 7.3 Reference surfaces become an auxiliary means for determination of quality. A part of a structure provided with a painting system where the painting system was applied in the presence of the responsible representatives of the supplier and the customer (supplier of painting materials, operational unit mechanic, responsible operator and corrosion engineer) in order to eliminate doubts as to the observance of technological procedures is understood as a reference surface. Reference surfaces with a min. area of 1.0 m 2 are to be carried out as agreed upon. Their number, size and location will be specified by the responsible representatives of the supplier and customer so as to respect all structural components and all different environments in which the structure is positioned. A written record of the reference area is made during an application in which all important facts are recorded. It is marked properly after completing and colour photographs are taken that are used for comparison in case of a potential claim. 8 Inspection of Application of Painting Systems 8.1 Individual operations of the technological procedure of painting system application, i.e. quality of surface preparation before painting, primer, intermediate coat, covering coat for both qualitative and quantitative points of view (surface condition, thickness of individual layers, scope of works) are accepted through inter-operational inspection. The corrosion technician has the right to stop works if the principles of anticorrosion protection specified in this directive or any other basic rules are not observed. Works can be restored with his consent only after elimination of the defects that led to the suspension of works. 8.2 The authorised person will perform records on acceptance inspection of each operation as well as on observance of conditions for application of painting systems in the site diary where the following information should be included: methods of surface processing and its condition, quality of individual layers stating material used, thickness, colour shade and application technology, in case of unsatisfactory quality, the detected defects and method of their elimination will be stated, when making paints out of air conditioned rooms, it is necessary to state dew point or weather conditions at paint application and drying, drying time of individual layers (intervals between individual coats),
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 12/26 date and hour of inspection. 8.3 Works without inspection and confirmation of acceptance in the site diary will not be reimbursed. 8.4 Surface acceptance inspection before application of the painting system is to be carried out visually using the comparison method according to the pictorial annexe of the standard ČSN ISO Inspection of quality of application of individual layers of paint is to be carried out visually on the basis of agreed upon colour differentiation of layers. Measuring of the thickness of paint layers is carried out simultaneously. 8.6 Final colour shade of paints is checked according to the RAL colour book. 8.7 Measuring of adhesion of the painting system is carried out using a tearing test ČSN EN ISO The value can be determined approximately using a grid test in accordance with ČSN ISO If the steel structure and equipment are supplied together with complete paint, it is necessary to observe the principles of differentiation of shades of individual layers. Checks of the number of layers are carried out using destructive methods. Damaged spots should be corrected immediately using the paint identical with the original paint. Non-destructive checking measurements of dry layer total thickness will also be carried out. It is recommended to carry out inspections of the production process at the supplier upon agreement with the authorised representative of the customer or corrosion technician. 8.9 New pieces of equipment should be delivered at least with a primer and intermediate coat with the specified thickness. They may not be supplied with primer only as it is considered to be a temporary protection only and will have to be removed by blasting. 9 Inspection, Registration and Plan of Painting Systems 9.1 Mechanics of individual plants and equipment are responsible for general condition of painting systems during their use. 9.2 The mechanic is obliged to carry out inspection of the condition of surface protections on all production plants always in spring and in autumn, in April or in November at the latest. He is obliged to invite the corrosion technician to this
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 13/26 inspection. They are obliged to make a written report on the corrosion condition of the inspected surface protections. The mechanic will prepare a proposal of an annual plan of painting works for his section on the basis of these periodical inspections always by the end of November; this plan is subjected to an approval procedure by the maintenance department manager and plant director. This plan becomes the main basis for preparation of an annual plan of painting works for the next year. 9.3 The user is responsible for the damage of painting systems as a consequence of failure to observe technological discipline. 10 Repairs and Renovations of Painting Systems Repairs of painting systems are carried out in case of local damage (mechanically, by staining with aggressive substance etc.) that will not exceed 35% of the surface protection area. This to be assessed by the corrosion technician Renovations of surface protections are carried out in case of damage exceeding 35% of the surface protection area. This is to be assessed by the corrosion technician In case of repairs and renovations with painting systems that could damage original paint (lifting, blisters etc.), it is necessary to use a suitable primer that should be tested in practice before use. The selection should be consulted with the corrosion technician For local repairs of painting systems on paper machine and dryer equipments painting system no. 9 may be used. 11 Storage of Materials and Safety of Work Painting materials should be stored in accordance with the conditions defined by the manufacturer of painting materials Shelf life of individual types of painting materials is specified in the respective technical data sheets of the manufacturer. Storage periods may not be exceeded. Packaging with damaged labels will be considered to be materials with expired guarantee periods.
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 14/ All employees (including external ones) who carry out application of surface protection should be made demonstrably familiar with safety regulations or with other required regulations and standards before the start of work The head of the working team of the supplier is responsible for compliance with safety regulations. 12 Conditions in the Contract with an External Supplier of Painting Systems 12.1 This Standard is binding for all suppliers of painting systems and there is a reference to this document in the concluded contract Mondi Štětí, a.s. provides: Precise descriptions and scopes of work Training in the required safety regulations according to the TOP 321 company standard Inspection and acceptance of the completed works including records in the site diary 12.3 The supplier is obliged to submit a written technological procedure for application of surface protection and to have such procedure approved by the corrosion technician, to observe the technological procedure and extent of works. In exceptional cases, it is necessary to ask for a change that may be approved by the corrosion technician, to submit apparatuses and means for a check of climatic conditions and a thickness gauge for measuring the thickness of both wet and dry layers of the painting film, to check each operation by own forces at first and to prepare a written record on the inspection; only if everything is OK, the operation should be checked by the authorised representative of the customer and the acceptance should be recorded in the site diary; works that are not checked and recorded in the site diary will not be reimbursed, works performed out of the contract and other extra works should also be recorded in the diary and approved by the authorised person, description of climatic conditions, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point should be recorded in the site diary at least three times a day (it is recommended to state values at the time of the start of works at 7:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and in case of weather changes),
Mondi Štětí STANDARD 4 Page: 15/26 duration of the guarantee period and assumed service life of the painting system should be stated in the contract, the surface protection hand over report will also include reports on the measurement thickness of individual layers and the complete painting system should be prepared before handing over. 13 Compositions of Painting Systems and their Use Painting systems for non-specified cases are to be approved by the corrosion technician. Preparation of the substrate under paint is always the same for all new painting systems and requires removal of dirt and chemical deposits and potential residues of greases and oils. Surface blasting with abrasive material to the level of Sa 2 1/2 according to ČSN ISO is carried out then. Colour shades are mentioned only informatively. The final colour shade is to be checked according to the RAL colour book.
