1 Intaglio printing in oil, using the Print-medium for relief and intaglio (50 056) Printing techniques in oil can now be realized with all Schmincke oil colours. Therefore you only have to change them into printable colours. This can easily be made with the Print-medium for relief and intaglio developed by Schmincke. You will need: A picture to be printed on a copper, plastic or metal plate (etching) Schmincke Print-medium for relief and intaglio (50 056) MUSSINI or Norma Professional oil colours Paper, suitable for intaglio printing, e.g. Hahnemühle mould-made watercolour board for printing techniques, matt, 230 g/m 2 Plastic bag Spray bottle, filled with water Glass plate Roll for linoprinting techniques Printing press Spatula or pallet knife Gauze and old newspaper (especially suitable are advertising brochures) Heating plate (or radiator) One-time gloves (solvent-resistant) Cleaning agent with solvents, e. g. turpentine substitute (50 019) or brush cleaner (50 051) Washing-up liquid How it works: Step 1: You have to moisten the paper completely with water. Use a spray bottle filled with water for an even, not too intense application. The paper should not be too wet, but well soaked. For further soaking put the paper into a plastic bag for about one hour, so that the paper fibres can spread and become softer to achieve a better printing result.

2 Step 2: For a better handling, slightly heat the printing plate, the glass plate, the medium and the oil colour as well. You can use a heating plate (ca. 35 C) or you can put all materials onto a radiator. Step 3: On your glass plate you mix one part of the oil colour with one part of the Print-medium for relief and intaglio with the pallet knife. Using a roll for linoprint you roll the mixture to a thin layer and apply it onto the printing plate in an even and thin layer. It is important that the colour fills out all slots of the plate.

3 Step 4: Put on your one-time gloves and remove the colour from the printing plate, using the gauze. The remaining colour should then be removed from the surface of the plate with the newspaper. Polish the plate carefully, so that the colour to be printed remains only in the slots. Put out your gloves. Step 5: Put the printing plate (colour side on the top) onto your printing press and adjust it, if necessary. Now you carefully put the well soaked paper onto the plate and the printing process can be carried out.

4 Step 6: Remove the print carefully from the press and let it dry on an even surface. Step 7: Finally put on your gloves again as you have to clean the printing plate with a suitable cleaning agent (e. g. turpentine substitute (50 019) or brush cleaner (50 051). Use some water and washing-up liquid to clean the printing plate once again. Some results of the intaglio print. On the left side: Print on a black cardboard with white oil colour. 5 Information on relief printing: This technique is much easier as it works like the typical linoprint. Mix one part of the medium with one part of the oil colour. Use a roll for the application onto the linoprinting plate and the printing process can start as usual - with a printing press or by hand. Relief print with red oil colour and Printmedium.
