2 Lesson Session Snapchat Self-Portrait 1 Engage Introduce the challenge and PowerPoint presentation What is a filter? o Discuss filters in the literal and metaphorical sense. What types of filters do you apply to your life? How can you illustrate your filters? Share art history exemplars looking at Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol s self portraits as filter examples versus a photograph. Reintroduce the challenge and show prototype. Discuss how the teacher solved the art-making challenge. Discuss class agenda. Develop Demonstrate the layers of acetone that make up the filters over the self-portrait Brainstorm different ways to combine media to facilitate planning for the bottom layer self portrait, such as black and white drawing, versus a watercolor painting. Direct students Before the end of class introduce starting the project so they know what will be covered next class. Create In their journals, have students sketch a self-portrait and plan their filter layers Once students feel comfortable starting their self-portrait, have them start on their final Walk around the room to engage and encourage individual ideas and trouble shoot as needed o Ask students to share their techniques for creating a proportionally accurate self-portrait *ACCOMMODATE/MODIFY: provide extra time to students as necessary, have struggling students sit with those excelling *CHALLENGE: challenge students to draw their portrait at an angle Reflect Have students participate in a Think-Pair-Share to discuss and refine their ideas Direct students to follow clean up procedures Verbal Reflection: Plan your time, the filters should not be an afterthought, they re the highlight of this piece. You are not limited to one filter Remind students that they will have 4 classes total to develop their self-portrait and 2-3 classes to add their filters

3 Lesson Session Snapchat Self-Portrait 2-5 Engage Review the proportions of the face and how to make adjustments if necessary for an 11 x18 Display PowerPoint/Agenda If students are ahead, they may turn this project into a series and create multiple selfportraits in varying sizes, media choices, and angles Develop Discuss the background - how can you incorporate a background to be cohesive with the filters Review the assignment rubric Show prototype to point out certain elements and principles they should consider Refer to color wheel for how colors work together, especially with opacity issues thinking ahead Review drawing and painting techniques as necessary Create Students will complete an 11 x18 self-portrait as realistic as they can in drawing or painting media. o Facial features should be proportionally accurate o Background should include some detail, but should not overwhelm the viewer and distract from the face o Self-portrait can be done in color or black and white Walk around the room and assist students as needed and monitor progress *ACCOMMODATE/MODIFY: provide extra time to students as necessary, have struggling students sit with those excelling, allow fewer filters *CHALLENGE: challenge students to add several filters, utilizing positive and negative space creatively Reflect Instruct students to follow clean up procedures Verbal Reflection: How is your composition developing? How are your proportions? How could you improve them? What would you change if necessary? How will your portrait affect your decision-making regarding your filters? Remind students that following 4 class periods focusing on the self-portrait, they will move on to developing the filter layers that cover the image.

4 Lesson Session Snapchat Self-Portrait 6-9 Engage Review techniques to add filters: o Use of opacity vs translucence o How much of the original image to keep visible o How to accommodate multiple filters Display PowerPoint Presentation/Agenda Have students volunteer to share their works in progress for midway critique on the accuracy of their self-portraits and their plans for their filters Develop Demonstrate painting on acetone, taping the acetone to the background self-portrait Show prototype to show the different layers, what each filter layer represents, and how they all work together Refer to color wheel for how colors work together, especially with opacity factor Create Students will add acetone layers on top of their 11 x18 self-portrait that illustrate their personal filters, both literal and metaphorical using paint with varying opacity o There should be multiple layers with multiple filters o Students will have to cut their own acetone from a roll and problem solve how to attach it to uphold their craftsmanship o Filters should add some sort of abstraction Walk around the room and assist students as needed and monitor progress Reflect Instruct students to follow clean up procedures Students will write an artist statement to present during critique. Upon completion: group critique of finished work o Have students share and discuss some of the roles they explored and how different relationships affect the masks they wear o Students can share responses from their artist statement worksheets
