2 GAS CHRISTMAS BREAKUP was on Monday 8th December ifty people, members F and partners, attended the GAS Christmas Breakup Party in the studio on Monday 8th December. The spit roast, slowly cooking for most of the afternoon, was as delicious as ever. President Leon Gleeson thanked all those who have contributed so much to running the Society through the year and wished everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Successful New Year. Marj Trebilcock won the raffle for the Christmas hamper and Janet Baird won pass the parcel. OUTDOOR GROUP CHRISTMAS BREAKUP was on Tuesday 9th December he Tuesday Outdoor Painting Group T enjoyed their breakup lunch at the Barwon Edge Boathouse restaurant on Tuesday 9th December. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. Some arrived at ten and painted and sketched in the grounds of the restaurant, (lawns, pathways, ponds, reeds, reflections, sunlight and shadow) wonderful subjects, till lunchtime. The group will resume on Tuesday 13th January at 10am at the Botanic Gardens. If the weather forecast is for a day of over 30 degrees we will regard it as being too hot for outdoor painting. 3 UPDATE FROM THE SECRETARY nother year has slipped by and the Art Society has A done well. You will have noticed the work in progress on the building which is a great joy to all of us and long overdue. We will endeavour to keep the building maintenance ongoing after the Council grant has been exhausted, there is still much to do. As a result the committee is looking at new avenues to raise funding for this ongoing project and will keep the members informed of any proposals. It has been necessary to set up a new Art Society website, many thanks to the great effort and expertise of Doug Banner. The new site has a professional clean look about it which we will be able to maintain and update ourselves. This was not an option on our old site and hence it was often out of date. There will be ongoing fine tuning and updates over the next few weeks. We also have a new address: geelongartsociety@gmail.com Please visit the new website: geelongartsociety.weebly.com We will also be welcoming a new Tutor, Wendy Ray to our team next term. Wendy will be conducting an acrylic class on Wednesday afternoons 1.30 to 3.30pm. Please welcome her and try out the new class. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gregor and Norma Wallace for their devotion and hard work over the past years in coordinating a successful Portrait Group, as they will be no longer doing this. They both will be missed by all the members, but thankfully will continue to be very much involved with the Society in other areas. Without the support of members like Gregor, Norma and Doug our Society would struggle to keep going. On behalf of the Committee and members we thank you and send our sincere appreciation for your hard work. Wishing all members a safe and prosperous New Year. Michele Karakasch PORTRAIT GROUP CHRISTMAS BREAKUP was on Wednesday 10th December he Portrait Group T Christmas Breakup was held in the studio on Wednesday 10th December. Gregor and Norma Wallace, conveners of the group for the past five years, announced that they would not continue in that role; therefore a new convener/s would be required for Gregor and Norma have done a magnificent job. Over that time they have provided around eighty different sitters, some of different ethnic backgrounds, and during school holidays, younger people. Everything has always run very smoothly. Gregor with his fine sense of humour and Norma providing the artists with photos of the sitters where required. June Pole had taken a collection. Gregor and Norma were presented with Christmas gifts and sincerely thanked by all for their excellent work over the last five years. They will remain as Art Society members and will continue to attend the group in the future. The Portrait Group will resume on Wednesday 4th February

5 J acinta Leitch was recently commissioned by the City of Greater Geelong to create this magnificent sculpture, which is now installed in Eastern Gardens, giving great views over Corio Bay, Eastern Beach and the city. Jacinta worked hard to complete the sculpture on time and the photo shows her enjoying a well deserved rest. Jacinta is a GAS member and conducts regular limestone carving workshops in the GAS studio through the year. The next workshop will be in February.
