3 PHILIP FREY MAINE HARBORS JUNE 14 - JULY 14, 2009 Essay by Karin Wilkes Photography by Ken Woisard 6 Court Street Ellsworth, Maine courthousegallery.com
4 PHILIP FREY: MAINE HARBORS Philip Frey has been painting Maine since he began his career in Throughout the years, vibrant, bold color has been the common thread that makes Frey s work standout. Using Maine harbors as his muse, Frey s first solo show at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art brings together a body of work that explores his trademark approach to color, and a renewed interest in the relationship between light and form. Maine harbors, with their abundance of architectural features in close proximity to the ocean, create ideal conditions for Frey to explore this relationship. The light is brighter, more intense, and the buildings, wharfs, pilings and piers allow light and shadow to create tension, drama, and interest, says Frey. Stonington s unique architecture, in particular, offers multiple places for light and shadow to interact. In Luminous Stonington, intense morning light cuts through a cluster of buildings, creating abstract angles, shapes and forms. Frey, a gifted colorist, skillfully selects his pallet to capture the glow of the sun s glare, making this deserted environment luminous and alive. The mood in another Stonington painting, Opera House, Stop. Stop., is quieter, more somber. Yet, the soft yellow light, Frey cast over a deserted intersection creates an intriguing composition infused with multiple shapes and forms. Frey is drawn to the time of day when dramatic light can work its magic. Early morning or evening are a favorite, he says. Whether the light is reflected off the bay, cast by a lamp, or falling on a piling as in Sailing Lessons, Sorrento, Frey takes full advantage of the moment to breathe life into each canvas. Although Maine landscapes remain a consistent Frey subject, content alone is no longer his focus. Frey makes a conscious attempt to let each painting emerge without conjecture. He credits the Fauvists, a group of Modern artists, led by Henri Matisse, whose work emphasized wild brush strokes and strident color as an early influence. More recently, however, Frey has developed an interest in the work of Fairfield Porter, a renowned Maine artist known for his landscapes and portraits. With this recent body of work, Frey paints what he knows with fresh eyes. He seems to be more comfortable in his own skin, and his ease at the easel is apparent, reflecting a new maturity to his work. The colors are rich, the canvas infused with vitality. There is a contagious joy behind every brush stroke. Watch out, you are apt to catch a wonderful feeling. Enjoy. Karin Wilkes is the director and owner of Courthouse Gallery Fine Art
