2 Fiber Arts Entry Category Guidelines Entry Deadline: Friday, June 1, How to Enter: Enter online at Entry confirmation will be sent by . If you do not see a confirmation in your at the time of entry, please check your spam folder first before contacting the OC Fair. Need assistance with the online entry? We have scheduled the following Help Days : May 29-June 1 (Tuesday Friday); 1 pm to 6 pm Parking: Enter at Gate 4 off Arlington Drive and go left inside the parking lot. Location: OC Fair Administration Building - Community Relations. Who May Enter: Adult and Youth (ages 9-18 by July 13, 2012). Special Girl Scouts Division open to Orange County Girl Scouts, ages Fiber Arts Divisions (see exceptions) are open to Orange County residents. Special Interest Competitions are open to all US residents. Processing Fees: Processing fees are payable online by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express). No refunds will be issued. ADULT DIVISIONS - $5 per entry. YOUTH DIVISIONS - $3 per entry. Entry Limit: Sets or ensembles may be entered as one entry. Quilts and Afghans are limited to one per person. ADULT DIVISIONS - Maximum of 5 Fiber Arts entries per person plus 1 quilt or afghan. No limit per class. YOUTH DIVISIONS - Maximum of 3 Fiber Arts entries per person plus 1 quilt. No limit per class. Free Fair Admission: Exhibitors will receive one 2012 OC Fair admission ticket at entry delivery. Delivery Delivery Date: June 29, Friday, 7 am 8 pm. This is the only time Fiber Art entries will be accepted. Where to Deliver Entries: Exhibits Promenade between Home Arts and Visual Arts Galleries. Report to the clerk at the Information Desk. Claim Checks: Tags and claim checks will be provided when exhibits are delivered. Pickup of Exhibits Pickup Date: August 13, Monday, noon 7 pm. Claim Checks: Claim check or photo ID required for pickup. THE OCFEC IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR EXHIBITS LEFT AFTER THIS DATE. If you are unable to pick up your items please arrange for someone to pick them up for you. Unclaimed entries and ribbons become the property of the OC Fair and may be discarded! No exceptions! 2

3 Fiber Arts Category Guidelines (cont.) Rules Read Competition Guidelines: Changes are made each year. Review the Fiber Arts Category Rules/Guidelines below and the OC Fair Guidelines at the end of this Competition Guide. All articles must be handwork or home-prepared by the exhibitor and finished within one year of the opening date of the OC Fair. Entries dated by the artist must fit within the one-year time frame. Items are to be entered by one person except in specified division or class. All finish-work must be done by the exhibitor except blocking, framing and pillow construction, which may be done by a professional. Articles must be entered in the class that describes/names that article. Other classes are for articles that do not fit in a named class by definition or description. Original Design - Articles entered in Original Design classes may not be kits, commercial patterns or copies. The design, choice of materials, and selection of colors must be the original work of the exhibitor. Any articles showing signs of wear or use may not be entered. Pictures and articles to be hung must be wired, ready to hang. Please no saw-tooth hangers, masking tape, string, pop-top rings, etc. Improperly wired entries will not be accepted. Framing with plastic or Plexiglas is preferred. Frames containing glass will require a damage waiver to be signed by exhibitor at entry delivery. OC Fair staff will use extreme care in handling frames containing glass, but assumes no responsibility for breakage. Exhibitors entering free-hanging articles must provide their own hanging equipment and/or contact the Program Coordinator prior to delivery date. No entry will be accepted where an exhibitor prescribes conditions under which he will exhibit. Sets or ensembles may be entered as one entry. If more than one unattached piece is included in one exhibit, the exhibitor must label each piece as to 1 of 2, 1 of 4 etc., in a set. Exhibitor may include a brief explanation of article. Entries over the maximum amount allowed or any entries previously entered at the OC Fair will be disqualified. Disqualified entries may not be displayed and must be picked up when notified. 3

Judging and Awards Adult Divisions: Placed using the American Judging System where exhibits are ranked one against another. 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd Place and Honorable Mention may be awarded in each class if judges so determine. 1 st Place winners will compete for Division Winner. Division Winners will compete for Best of Show. Young Adults and Junior Divisions: Placed using the Danish Judging System where each entry is judged on how well it meets a standard rather than how it compares to other entries. Entries are judged Blue (superior), Red (very good) or White (average) Award. There may be more than one Blue, Red or White Award per class. All Blue Awards will compete, using the American Judging System, for cash awards. Division Winners will compete for Best of Show. Judges: Qualified judge(s) will be selected by the Program Coordinator to judge all exhibits. The decision of the jurors is final. Judging Criteria: Originality and creativity, workmanship and technique, level of difficulty, color and design, finishing or presentation and appearance. Judging Results: Results can be viewed online around the third week of the OC Fair at Please do not call or for competition results. Ribbons: Exhibitors will receive awarded ribbons on entry pickup day. Special Interest competition ribbons will be mailed after the close of the OC Fair. Premiums: ADULT DIVISIONS; 1 st Place (one per class) - $10, Division Winner - $35, Best of Show - $50. YOUTH DIVISIONS; Division Winner - $25, Best of Show - $35. Award Checks: will be made payable to the exhibitor whose name is indicated on the entry form and mailed within 30 days after the close of the OC Fair. Judges and/or the Program Coordinator have the option of changing the requested category of a submitted entry. es or divisions may be combined to create an adequate judging pool. If an entry is disqualified after judging is completed, the judge will not change the status of awards given for other entries. 4

10 Fiber Arts Adults BED QUILTS Delivery June 29, Friday, 7 am 8 pm Bring to the east entrance of the Exhibits Promenade between the Home Arts and Visual Arts Galleries. Entry Limit: One quilt per exhibitor due to the popularity of the Quilt Competition and limited display space. Please include a 4 sleeve (rod pocket attached to backing of quilt) for hanging. Entire quilt may not be displayed due to space limitations. Quilts and coverlets must have been completed/finished since the last OC Fair (within the last year). To qualify for judging in a class, more than 50 percent of the construction and techniques in the entered class must be used. "Mixed Techniques" means that two or more techniques are used where the additional techniques are more than embellishment, i.e., Sampler Quilts. No wall hangings. See Division 449. When an entry has been quilted by another person, it must be entered into Top by Exhibitor, Quilting by Another. Quilts made by 2 or more people - identification must be given to all parties involved. 14 Home Arts & Crafts Special Interests Brighten the Lives of Cancer Patients Open to all US Residents No Processing Fee Knots of Love Founder, Christine Fabiani Shively Knots of Love s mission is to warm the hearts and heads of those experiencing traumatic hair loss, no matter the cause. We are a dedicated group throughout the United States who knit and crochet caps with love. This act of kindness fills a need which is often overlooked. 16 OC Fair Guidelines Dates to Remember Online Entry Most competitions require online entry by 11:59 pm on Friday, June 1, Please check individual department s guidelines for entry deadline, as well as dates and times for entry delivery and pickup. Dates and times are absolute. Late entries will not be accepted. Who May Enter Some divisions are open only to Orange County residents, and some limit the number of entries and age of entrants. Check individual division guidelines for who may enter each competition. Youth must enter the divisions and classes specified for their age group. The exhibitor s age as of July 13, 2012, determines the following: Blue Ribbon Kids - Ages 3 to 8. Juniors - Ages 9 to 12. Young Adults - Ages 13 to 18. Youth may not enter in the Adult divisions. Open Youth who turn age 19 by July 13, 2012, are considered adults. 4-H youth members in good standing may be age 19 as outlined by the 4-H Cooperative Extension Office. 4-H members who are age 19 may choose to enter as either a 4-H Young Adult or Adult - they may not enter both. This rule applies for all OC Fair 4-H Competitions. Enter Online Enter online at Incorrect or incomplete information on online entry may disqualify the exhibit or cause delay in issuing awards. Online submission of data requires that you understand that the decision of the judge is final. You agree to abide by all rules and regulations contained in the OC Fair Competition Guides and understand that such rules and regulations are incorporated with and become a part of this agreement. You hereby release the OC Fair and the State of California from all liability of every kind and character on account of loss, damages, or injury to property, which may occur on the fairgrounds. Processing Fees Most divisions require processing fees. Check individual division guidelines; you pay fees online with a credit card. No refunds will be issued. Copyright Entries and Exhibits No entries or works with copyright or licensing infringement will be accepted. If there is any reproduction of a registered trademark item or work of another artist, the district reserves the right to disqualify the entry. Repeat Entries No repeat entries (items entered in a previous year s OC Fair competition) will be accepted. 16

17 OC Fair Guidelines Acceptable Entries Entries and Exhibits, continued The OC Fair is a family-oriented event. Any entry deemed inappropriate for family viewing will be disqualified prior to judging. All decorative material must be flameproof. Articles which are objectionable, stained, soiled, broken, or not ready for hanging will not be accepted for judging and will not be displayed. You will be notified for pickup. OC Fair reserves the right to refuse, accept conditionally or to cancel any entry, disqualify exhibitors, prohibit exhibition of entries or to cancel awards, without claim for damages. OC Fair will not be liable for entries made in error and will not re-open judging to accommodate such entries. Exhibit Sales Sale of an exhibit or any part of an exhibit for delivery during the OC Fair will not be permitted. Entry Limit The Exhibit Supervisor and/or Program Coordinator have the right to limit entries to facilities available. Entry forms will be dated as received and entry forms received first will have priority. All entries will be accepted unless the exhibitor is otherwise notified. Protection of Exhibits All cases will be locked and will not be opened while the public is in the building. Exhibits will not be allowed to leave the OC Fair & Event Center grounds unless the Program Coordinator has approved a release slip. Reasonable precaution will be taken in protection of exhibits. The exhibitor must arrange for insurance if desired. OC Fair will not be responsible for accidents or loss that may occur to any of the exhibitors or exhibits at the show and the exhibitors shall hold the management harmless and indemnify it against any legal proceedings arising from such accident or loss. Presentation of entry form shall be deemed acceptance of this rule. Judges and Judging Procedures Awards and Judging For judging purposes, the OC Fair reserves the right to combine classes or divisions to create an adequate judging pool where numbers are insufficient to ensure adequate competition. Qualified judge(s) will be selected by the Program Coordinator to judge all exhibits. Judges have the authority to disqualify or transfer to the correct class any exhibit that does not meet the requirement of the division or class in which it is entered. Adult Divisions are placed using the American Judging System (ranking exhibits one against another). 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd Place and Honorable Mention may be awarded in each class if judges so determine. 17

18 OC Fair Guidelines Judges and Judging Procedures (cont.) Young Adults and Junior Divisions are placed using the Danish Judging System where each entry is judged on how well it meets a standard rather than how it compares to other entries. Entries are judged Blue (superior), Red (very good) or White (average) Award. There may be more than one Blue, Red or White Award per class. All Blue Awards will compete, using the American Judging System, for cash awards. The decision of the jurors is final. If an entry is disqualified after judging is completed, the judge will not change the status of awards given for other entries. Judging is NOT open to the public (except Special Contests). Judging results can be viewed online around the third week of the OC Fair at Please do not call or for competition results. Award information will not be given by telephone. Premiums Signed judging sheets will be used as evidence for payment of premiums. Ribbons and tags will not be accepted. Checks for awards will be made payable to the exhibitor whose name is indicated on the entry form and distributed within 30 days after the close of the OC Fair. Ribbons To encourage high standards, the judge shall award 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Place in each class according to merit; if without merit, the judge shall make no award under any circumstances. Ribbons and special awards must be picked-up by exhibitors at the close of the OC Fair. Claiming Awards and Exhibits Exhibits and/or awards left after the official release date are not the responsibility of the OC Fair and may be discarded. If unable to pick up your items, please arrange for someone to pick them up for you. All work not picked up will be discarded. No exceptions. Claim check or photo ID required for pickup.
