1 Fair Isles Winter Sashing Block Crossing Block 12 x 12 (12-1/2 unfinished) Foundation Pieced Pattern by Cutting List: This block is foundation pieced. The dimensions in the cutting list have already added 1/2 seam allowance (rather than the usual 1/4 ) around all pieces to allow for foundation piecing. The cutting list is given for ONE BLOCK. The number in ( ) is for all 13 blocks in the Fair Isles Winter setting. Label all pieces with the letter shown. From white on white print: Cut 16 (208) squares 1-3/4 x 1-3/4 (A) Cut 8 (104) triangles from 4 (52) 5-1/2 squares cut once on the diagonal. (B) Cut 4 (52) rectangles 2 x 6-1/2 (C) Cut 8 (104) squares 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 (H) From dark blue batik: Sashing Block Fair Isles Block of the Month MGD 255 Cut 20 (260) squares 1-3/4 x 1-3/4 (A) Cut 4 (52) rectangles 1-1/2 x 3-3/4 (D) Cut 4 (52) rectangles 1-1/2 x 4-1/4 (E) Cut 8 (104) rectangles 2-1/2 x 4 (F) Cut 8 (104) rectangles 2-1/2 x 4 (G) From medium blue batik: Cut 1 (13) squares 2 x 2 (I) Instructions: Print 13 copies of the 5-page foundation pattern on light-weight paper, velum, or newsprint paper. Check the 1 test squares on each pattern page to be sure that the foundations have printed out at 100%. Even the tiniest error will decrease the overall size of the completed block. Label each foundation pattern with the fabric color for each patch. Remember that foundation patterns are reversed! So the printed side of the pattern will be the back of the block. Sew on the printed side of the foundation. (These directions assume you know how to foundation piece. If you are new to foundation piecing, please watch one of the many excellent You Tube video demos on the technique before beginning. Piece each foundation section, pressing as you go. When all sections are pieced, trim the foundation on the outer cutting lines. You should have a full 1/4 seam allowance on all sides from the inner sewing lines. Typically paper foundations are left on the fabric until the block is fully assembled. However, you may find it useful to remove the paper after you join sections together, especially with the smaller sections, if you are using standard copy paper. This is not really necessary if you are using a very thin foundation paper. This block is assembled in four quarters. Each quarter is exactly the same. Two quarters are joined together with a white rectangle. Then a set of 2 long white rectangles with the medium blue center square between them are used to join the two halves of the blocks. To assemble the first quarter join sections F, G, and A on the stitching lines. (Illustrations show here are NOT to scale. They are for reference only.) Remove the paper and press the seams open. Sew Section S to the bottom of Section FGA so S1 is aligned with A4, and S2 is beneath the small nine-patch. Match the seam. Remove the paper and press the seam open. Sew Section C to Sections AS. Sew Section N to the bottom of Section SC matching seams. Sew Section X to the right side of Section CN. Remove all paper and press the seams open. Sew the two white B triangles to either long side of the pieced block completed in step Page 2 of 8 Copyright 2017

Join the upper right and lower right quarters to either side of the Z1 white

Join the upper left and lower left quarters to either side of the Y1 white

Join the right half of the block to the other side of Section E, matching

3 Trim this completed section to 6 x 6. Assemble the three remaining quarters of the block in the same manner. All sections for each quarter are on the same page, so keep them together in a baggie or envelope once you cut them apart so they stay together. Join the upper right and lower right quarters to either side of the Z1 white rectangle. Join the upper left and lower left quarters to either side of the Y1 white rectangle. Join the left half of the block to Section E, matching seams. Join the right half of the block to the other side of Section E, matching seams. Remove all paper and press the block. Trim, if necessary, to 12-1/2 square. Make 13 Crossing Blocks if you are using the Fair Isles Winter setting. Page 3 of 8 Copyright 2017
