1 Ingleside Imaginarium s GUARDIANS OF NOTRE DAME Mystery Stitch-Along
2 Welcome! Thanks for joining the Ingleside Imaginarium Mystery Stitch-Along, Guardians of Notre Dame! Travel to Paris, France to stitch the sculpted monsters and creatures that sit atop the towers of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. The border of this pattern is inspired by the Rose Window, a common architectural feature found in cathedrals and churches around the world. Each month, a section of the window will be filled with a stitched, stained glass version of one of the carved stone creatures that look down from the cathedral. What s in a Name? While it s very tempting and easy to call this a Gargoyle SAL, there are several different kinds of carved figures that you find on buildings! The name gargoyle specifically refers to a carved figure with a lead drain spout inside, often exiting through the mouth of the figure. The rain water would be diverted through these spouts and keep the building s mortar and stone intact. The French word gargouille is the root of the word gargoyle, which means throat. It also is a nod to the gargling noise the water made as it poured through the drain spouts and out the gargoyle s mouth! The common name for a scary, carved figure solely for ornamental purposes on a building is a grotesque, though the figures featured in this design and on Notre Dame s towers are called Chimeras. Gargoyle SAL, though, is a lot catchier! The name of this SAL refers to an interpretation of these carvings purpose. Though sometimes used to represent the minions and horrors one might encounter in the Underworld, many were added to scare off other evil spirits and protect those inside the building they guard.
3 What Fabric Do I Need? This pattern can be stitched on any fabric! Linen or Aida, there are no fractional stitches, so you can stitch on whichever you are most comfortable. The fabric could reflect how you want the sky to look behind your window! Here are the stitch counts and measurements of a few different fabrics: STITCH COUNT 165 x count linen/14 count aida 32 count linen/16 count aida x x cm x 29.4 cm 26.2 cm x 25.7 cm If using aida, stitch with 2 threads over 1 square, with 2 strands for backstitch. If using linen or evenweave, stitch with 2 threads over two threads in your fabric, with 2 strands for backstitch. The model is stitched on a fat quarter (17 x 26 ) of 28 count lungana in Sterling by Picture This Plus, to represent a cloudy sky. What Threads Do I Need? Below is the list of flosses needed to stitch this design. You will need 3 skeins each of the border colors, DMC 535 and Gentle Arts Sampler Threads Moonlit Path, #7085. (Moonlit Path can be replaced by DMC skeins - 3 skeins * * 7085 can be replaced by DMC 3743 antique violet vy lt Moonlit Path The Gentle Arts is a variegated thread. This thread should be stitched one full X at a time, using two threads pulled from the same length. It is also advised to try to match the shade which your lengths of thread start and end. If you tie off with the purple shade, try to start again with the purple shade!
