2 A rule of thumb is to add 1/8 to 1/2 yard to all yardage to account for shrinkage, straightening, cutting errors, and prints that may require special cutting to get the best results. You should protect your investment in time and fabric by making a sample block from scrap material before cutting into your fabric. Before beginning any project, wash and press your fabric to prevent less shrinkage when washing your quilt the first time. If you like the behavior of crisp fabric as you cut, try a little Best Press or any spray starch when you iron it. Cutting Directions for Rotary Cut...All measurements based on 1/4 seam allowance... Gray Cut (24) 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 squares for 9-patch... Cut (4) 4 x 4 squares for border #2 corners... Cut (8) 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 squares for border #3 4-patch corners... Cut (8) 9-7/8 x 9-7/8 then cut in half on 45 for HST blocks...cut (5) strips WOF x 4 for border #2... cut 5 strips 5-1/4 x 4-1/8 for (32) diamonds in border #3 (see template for exact angle)... Main Red Cut (12) 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 squares for 9-patch... If the images are smaller you can sew a sashing around the sides that need to be lengthened. This fabric had 6 scences depicting the Civil War, therefore I purchased enough material to make (12) 9-1/2 blocks...

3 Next prepare the Log Cabin blocks that go in the center of your quilt. NOTE: this quilt will be pieced together starting from the center out. Start sewing with the center piece H and work counterclockwise...h to G - G TO F - F TO F, - F TO E E TO E - E to D D to D D to B B to B B to A A to A - A to C... Make (4) Log Cabin Blocks and sew together as shown in the finished quilt... Make 16 Half-Square Triangle (HST) Blocks...sew (2) HST blocks on each side only of the (4) center Log Cabin Blocks. Next sew 2 pre-stamped blocks to each HST blocks on sides only. See finished quilt above for placement. Next complete the top and bottom rows of center blocks alternating with a HST block and a fussy cut block following the layout in the completed quilt above. Make (4) 9-patch blocks for the 4 corners (top row and bottom row)

4 Traditional 9-Patch 9-Patch using images from pre-stamped material If your printed fabric has small decals in addition to large images, you may use them in your 9-patch, 4-patch, and/or corner stone s in borders as shown above... Complete the top and bottom row alternating the 9-patch, HST, and fussy cut blocks following the layout in completed quilt above. Adding the Borders Border #1: 1. Sew your border strips into one long strip, mitering the joins shown to the left. Press the seam open and trim. 2. Sew a 54-1/2 x 3 strip to each side. Sew a 59-1/2 x 3 strip to top and bottom. Border #2: 1. Repeat step one in border #1...Sew a 4 x 4 corner or image to top of (2) 59-1/2 x 4 strips. Sew 2 short strips to each side and sew the (2) remaining strips with corners to top and bottom. Border #3 This border requires a bit of sewing in the pieced border, however by following the directions below this can be very easy. 1. Make (4) 4-Patch blocks. Traditional 4-Patch 4-Patch with Images from pre-stamped material Sew (4) 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 blocks together to complete a 4-Patch. 2. As explained in the Rotary Cutting chart above you will need 5 Gray strips 5-1/4 x 4-1/8 for (32 Grey) diamonds in border #3 (see template for exact angle)... You will need 9 Beige strips 10-3/8 x 2-1/2 for (64 Beige) diamonds for border #3 (see template for exact angle)...

5 You will need 4 Red strips 9-3/4x 7-3/4 for (12) large Red diamonds for border #3 (see template for exact angle)... You will need 2 Red strips 8-3/4x 9-1/8 for (8) half drop Red diamonds in border #3 (see template for exact angle)... Each finish border strip will measure 66 inches... Using this technique, your border will come out perfect. Mark the quarter inch seam on the back of EACH diamond making sure the points are marked. Sew all the gray diamonds with (2) beige diamonds (1) on each side. We will use these sections later. I lay my pieces out for each border (one at a time) to be sure I am sewing the correct side of each diamond. Sew one gray/beige section to the half drop diamond (end piece). matching the corners you marked earlier. Sew (1) gray/beige sections to top right of a large red diamond matching the corners you marked earlier. Sew (1) gray/beige sections to left bottom of a large red diamond

6 This is what the last section should look like. Back of Large Red Diamond Section After you have made all these individual sections, it will be easy to sew the sections together making one long border that will equal 66 inches. Now we are ready to sew the sections together be sure to match the points of the red diamonds. After completeing all (4) borders sew a 4-Patch to each end of (2) finished borders. Sew an 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 4-Patch to top and bottom of (2) 66 x 8-1/2 border strips. Sew the (2) short (66 inch) strips to each side and sew the (2) remaining strips with corners to top and bottom. Each finished border strip with corner 4-patch blocks will measure 82 inches.

7 Below are images of Rotary Cutting and Templates (in that order), however the templates may not be actual size. The size is labeled on each and may be enlarged to equal the exact size. I actually cut my pieces from the rotary cut directions and used the template on the first cut to ensure I had the correct angle before cutting each piece.

13 To get a template for the 8 x 16.5 Large Diamond simply double the half diamond. Place the bottom on a fold and cut a template (provided your paper is large enough).
