57 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #14 - Quilting in Sewing Mode Piecing with a 1/4 (6mm) Seam allowance: Snap on your Quilters 1/4 Piecing foot P. The presser foot P has distance guideline marks 1/4 (6mm) and 1/8 (3mm) from the needle. Select Straight Stitch A1:2 Place two pieces of cotton quilting fabric right sides together. Align the edge of your presser foot with the edge of the fabric. 5 Stitch a seam with a 1/4 (6mm) seam allowance. NOTE: When using the Quilters 1/4 Piecing foot P use only center needle position straight stitch. 6 On another piece of fabric, place your fabric so that the starting edge of the fabric is aligned with the back red line on the foot and the seam edge with the edge of the foot as shown. This will insure you will start stitching exactly 1/4 (6mm) from the edge of the fabric Quilting in Sewing Mode 1

58 7 Continue stitching and stop when the front red line on the foot is even with the end of the fabric. This insures that you will stop exactly 1/4 (6mm) from the end of the seam. This is helpful in certain types of piecing such as in a Grandmother Flower Garden or any time you need to stop and start 1/4 (6mm) from the ends of the block. 8 Snap on presser foot A. Select E1:1 9 Stitch a 1/4 seam by aligning the edge of your presser foot A with the edge of the fabric. 10 Stippling Stitches: Select E2:26 11 On a 10 (25cm) square of fabric, use your Pictogram Pen to mark a line lengthwise 2 (5cm) in from the right hand edge of the fabric. 59 Snap on presser foot S. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. Align the center red line of the foot with the line marked on the fabric. Stitch several repeats of the stipple stitch and touch STOP. When your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe stops, check to see that the needle is aligned with the marked line. If not, adjust as necessary. Keep the fabric straight, but let your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe do the work. Repeat to the end of your fabric. During the last stitch pattern, touch STOP to end the stippling stitch at the end of the pattern repeat. Align the needle with the next marked starting dot. Stitch the next row. Repeat across the fabric. Handlook Quilting Stitch: Select E1:2 Snap on your Quilters 1/4 Piecing foot P Insert a size 90 INSPIRA Topstitch Needle. Thread with Sulky invisible thread on top. Because embroidery tension is designed to pull to the back of the hoop, you may need to adjust your tension/portioning to a higher number. Increase to 3.6. Tip: Test by hooping a quilt sandwich. Leave a long bobbin thread tail. Manually bring up the bobbin thread. This will keep the back of your quilt neat. Do this each time you begin stitching. Stitch the first row of stippling. Remove the hoop from your DE- SIGNER DIAMOND deluxe and check to see if the tension/ portioning is balanced. If not, adjust as needed. Before you begin your next row, snip the bobbin thread, which is easy to do, as the hoop has moved towards you, and bring it up manually as before. Stitch all the rows. Using the concepts you have just learned, try building other quilting designs using the stitches in your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe. You need to determine how many stitch repeats will fit in your hoop. As you are selecting the stitch, and touching Duplicate, watch at the bottom of the screen. Our hoop is 150mm and when we reached Program Length 147mm we knew we were at the limit of the hoop. 72 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #18 - Majestic Hoop Quilt Block We have chosen a quilt design built in to your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe. When choosing other designs, remember, that in order to use Design Positioning, to check your position after embroidering the first side, you need to have some room, to move the design. You cannot have a design that completely fills the Majestic Hoop. We recommend at least 20mm of space, around the design on all sides, to enable you to position as needed. Touch Embroidery Mode to toggle to embroidery. Touch Start Menu Select DL_100.vp3 Touch OK. Touch My Hoops, select 360 x 350. 74 22 23 Hoop your fabric with two layers of Tear-A-Way Light Stabilizer in your Majestic Hoop. Be sure to use your clips. If you are quilting through a finished quilt, you can hoop the quilt sandwich as long as it uses a fairly thin cotton batting. NOTE: We are using a quilting design, comprised of straight stitches. If you are using a design that has fill stitches, and dense stitching, you need to use appropriate stabilizer for the design. For a dense design, that would be several layers of regular weight Tear-A-Way or Cut-A-Way. Touch GO! 24 When prompted Do you want to stitch out all of one side first? Touch OK If you are embroidering through a quilt sandwich, thread with bobbin thread to match your top thread. Bring up the bobbin thread to the top of your fabric. Increase your tension/portioning a few clicks for a balanced stitch. Stitch the first side of your design. When the first side is complete, remove your hoop and turn it to attach it on the opposite side. We are going to use Design Positioning to check the second side of our design, and also to match up the next repeat. We don t really need to check the second side, because our designs are not dense, so compensation should not be a problem, and our designs don t actually touch. 28 Learning to do this will help you use it in other designs where the alignment is more crucial. We need to pick the point that we are going to match to. Because we used the grid, and placement numbers, we know our designs are exactly the same distance apart. So, measure two identifiable points in the design. As you can see, we chose where the petals intersect and it measured 1 3/4. We next measured over 1 3/4 to the right. Make a cross hair there, and repeat for the flower above as shown Majestic Hoop Quilt Block 3

75 29 30 Touch Design Positioning Touch Step 1 31 Locate the point we are matching on the Screen of your DESIGN- ER DIAMOND deluxe. Place your red cursor over that point Touch Zoom to Cursor and fine tune the placement of the red cursor on the design on the screen. Touch Step 2. This is where we will check our position on the fabric in the hoop. If all is well, your needle should be right over your mark. Lower the needle and check if it is over the mark. If it isn t right on, then use the control arrows to align the needle with the mark on the fabric. You may get a message if your needle is too low. You can choose to allow a lower needle position if you get this message. Touch Step 3. Locate the point on the other flower. Touch Step 4 and check your position on the fabric. Touch OK to close the Design Positioning window. Embroider the second half of the design. When you get the Message: Embroidery is finished, Clear Screen? Touch X Majestic Hoop Quilt Block 4

76 39 To place the second set of designs, we will use Design Positioning again. We know that our designs are 1 3/4 apart. Using a ruler, mark a line down as shown, from the previous designs vertically (the length of the runner) Then measure down 1 3/4 as shown, to create a horizontal mark Touch Design Positioning Touch Step 1 43 Place the red cursor on the screen as shown, on the flower. This point corresponds with the mark we made on our fabric Touch Zoom to Cursor and fine tune the placement of the cursor on the DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe screen. Touch Step 2. Use the control arrows to move the needle so it is over the cross mark you made on the fabric. We can t check the other mark we made until we stitch the second side. As long as your center line is lined up with the center line of the hoop, your design will be correct. Just touch OK to close and accept the changes you made in Design Positioning Majestic Hoop Quilt Block 5

77 If you get the message that your design is outside the hoop area, touch Zoom to Hoop. You can see how much outside the hoop you are. If it is only a stitch or two, touch Step 2 and use your control arrows to move it a couple of clicks back into the hoop. If you are a long way outside the area, you will need to re-hoop and repeat the Design Positioning. When the first side is complete, rotate the hoop and touch OK. Our marks are now on the bottom of the hoop, towards us. Touch Design Positioning. Touch Step 1 53 Place the red cursor as shown, on the Screen of your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe As before, touch Zoom to Cursor and fine tune the placement of the red cross. Touch Step 2 and move if necessary so your needle is over the mark you made on your fabric. You should be very close to the mark. Finish stitching the embroidery. Using the techniques you learned here, you can quilt a full quilt if desired, or quilt a runner as we did Majestic Hoop Quilt Block 6

We would be able to move the design from side to side, but not from top to bottom. Instead we are going to use our basting to match up our next repeat of the design. Hoop INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer and place your hoop in your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe. Lower the needle into the corner of the basting, from the first design. Lower the foot and raise the needle. Baste the fabric in place Designer Smocking 6

84 DESIGNER DIAMOND DELUXE Techniques #20 - Designer Edging Stitches 1 Edging stitches enable you to create your own trims and laces! They are easy and fun, and you can create beautiful colored trims you couldn t find at the store! You can even make little tassels! Some of the Edging Stitches are: Cut a strip of cotton fabric 2 x width of fabric using your rotary cutter and mat. This is important for the D Menu heirloom stitches. They need a nice clean edge to be stitched on. Thread with 40 wt. Rayon Embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Snap on your B Foot. Place two strips INSPIRA Tear-A-Way Light stabilizer underneath the strip of fabric. The Tear-A-Way Light is stable enough to support the stitching but will tear away easily without disturbing the stitches Designer Edging Stitches 1

85 7 8 9 Touch Start Menu Touch Stitch Menu Select the D Menu 10 Select D3:49-66 and try out the different edging stitches. Align the edge of your B Foot with the edge of the fabric as shown Place two strips of INSPIRA Aqua Magic Stabilizer underneath the fabric and stitch a few more. We found our best stitch out was attained with two layers of Aqua Magic Stabilizer. NOTE: Because these border stitches D3:49-66 have a forward and backward row of stitching on the edge, when washed, these stitches will be loose and give picot edge. If you want a more defined stitch, apply fray blocking liquid along the edge of the stitch and allow to dry before washing. Touch Start Menu Touch Stitch Menu Select the N Menu, menu 3. Select N3:60. 86 Touch Mirror Side-to-Side Fold a piece of fabric in half lengthwise. Place on four layers of Aqua Magic Stabilizer. If you look at the photo, you will see that two layers were not enough. The fabric and stitching was tunneling. A water soluble stabilizer is necessary for this stitch to enable the tassels to fringe. 19 You can also see that they are not stitching out quite even on our machine. 91 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #22 - Free Motion Stitching 1 When stitching free motion on your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe you have two choices, Free Motion Floating or Free Motion Spring Action. Which one you select depends on the foot you are using. The following feet require Free Motion Floating: 2 R Foot Clear Open Toe Free-Motion Foot # Free Motion Guide Foot Yarn Couching Feet Set # # Free Motion Stitching 1

92 The following feet require Free Motion Spring Action: Sensor Q-Foot Open Toe Free Motion Spring Foot # To set your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe for Free Motion: In Sewing Mode, Touch Free Motion Technique icon. In the pop-up choose either Free Motion Floating or Free Motion Spring Action. NOTE: When sewing with Free Motion the machine will automatically use Thread Tension instead of Thread Portioning. Free Motion Floating: Free Motion Floating allows the foot to float just above the surface of the fabric. When you begin sewing at a slower speed, the foot will hop up and down as the stitch is formed. As you stitch more quickly, the foot goes into floating mode and stays there. It is possible to adjust the height at which it is floating above the fabric. This is called the Pivot Height. 6 To adjust the Pivot Height: Touch Free Motion Technique icon in Sewing Mode. 7 8 When choosing Free Motion Floating in the pop-up, the Pivot Height adjustment is visible. The default is set at 0. Touch the + to raise the foot up, further away from the fabric. Touch the - to move the foot down, closer to the fabric. Because fabric thickness varies, you may need to adjust the Pivot Height. If you see the fabric bouncing and your thread is breaking, touch the - to lower the foot. If your foot is clamping down too hard on the fabric making it difficult to move, touch the + to raise it up giving the fabric more clearance to move Free Motion Stitching 2

93 9 Free Motion Spring Action: Free Motion Spring Action allows the foot to hold the fabric taut as the stitch is being formed and rise up after the stitch has been made. You will find that the Pivot Height is not active when Free Motion Spring Action has been chosen because it is not applicable. Which to Use? The choice to use Floating or Spring Action is largely a personal choice when doing basic free motion stitching. 1. The Sensor Q-foot is useful when working on thick, fabrics or layers of fabrics. Always use this foot when sewing with Free Motion Spring Action. The spring action holds the fabric taut as the stitch is being formed. The Sensor Q Foot is designed to be used either in free motion sewing or in embroidery. 2. The R Foot is the basic Free Motion foot that comes with your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe The Clear Open Toe Free Motion Foot is an optional accessory that is very useful when the floating position is desired and you need to follow a line. The open toe in the front gives the best visibility The Free Motion Guide Foot has a grid, making it easy to do echo quilting. The large surface of the foot keeps the fabric down, out of the way of the needle when using a puffy batting The Yarn Couching Feet are specialty feet for couching yarn. 6. The Open Toe Spring Foot is used the same as the Sensor Q Foot, but is open in the front making it easier to see Let s Sew: Insert a size 90 INSPIRA Quilting Needle Free Motion Stitching 3

Touch Free Motion Technique icon in Sewing Mode. 16 Choose Free Motion Floating in the Free Motion Technique pop-up Select A1:2. When sewing free motion, you are moving the fabric. Run the machine moderately fast. You may want to touch the START/STOP and slow your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe down one notch. Then sew with the foot control fully depressed to have an even speed. Begin with long thread tails both top and bobbin. Tap your foot control once to lower the needle and bring it back up. This allows you to bring your bobbin thread to the top. Hold the thread tails and stitch in place for a few stitches. Stop and trim the tread tails. 20 Then begin by stitching back to front, then side to side. Practice loops and even write your name! You are controlling the stitch length by how you move the fabric. Practice for consistent movement of the fabric and speed of the machine Free Motion Stitching 4

95 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #23 - Designer Cutwork 1 Cutwork on your Husqvarna Viking DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe can be done two different ways. The first, is to cut out the area, using your small scissors that came with your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe. The Second is to use Cutwork Needles. You can only use the cutwork needles on designs that were digitized for use with the Cutwork Needles. Traditional Cutwork: Traditional cutwork designs use these symbols to indicate that they are cutwork designs. 2 The first symbol is showing that the area to be cut will first be stitches. The second is showing the fabric being cut. The third is showing the cut area, satin stitched. Heavy Weight water soluble stabilizer such as INSPIRA Aqua-Magic is the preferred stabilizer. Your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe has two cutwork designs. They are 40 and 95. On the Classic Collection CD, there are also these cutwork designs, 28, 29, 104, 105, 107 and Touch Embroidery Mode to toggle to embroidery. Touch Start Menu. The needles are color coded #1 red, #2 yellow, #3 green and #4 blue. The embroidery designs you use with INSPIRA Cutwork Needles must be digitized for use with the needles. You cannot use them with cutwork designs that have not been digitized for INSPIRA Cutwork Needles. This symbol will be on the embroidery package or download page telling you that it has been digitized for use with these needles Designer Cutwork 3

98 20 Fabrics: Most fabrics that are suitable for traditional cutwork will work with the Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit. The ideal fabric is a woven, natural fiber fabric such as cotton or linen. Knits work well, if stabilized. See Fabric Preparation below for details. Try stitching a sample embroidery before starting on your actual project. On some fabrics, the needles may snag the fabric as they cut. The needles will last a long time depending on the fabric used and other factors, especially when used with natural fiber fabrics. Individual replacement needles are available if one gets damaged or dull. The part number # is for a replacement package containing the four different needles. The part number # is for the Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit which contains needles, CD with instruction movie and 5 designs, Multi Purpose Tool and instruction to get you started. 21 Fabric Preparation for stretch fabric: Any fabric that stretches needs to be stabilized before beginning your embroidery. This includes any fabrics like T-Shirt Knit, as well as fabrics like Denim which have a certain amount of give, due to the way it is woven. Any fabric with lycra in it needs to be stabilized. To stabilize the fabric: 1. Place the glue side of INSPIRA Light & Soft Fuse-On stabilizer on the wrong side of the fabric. 2. Press with a dry iron to fuse in place. Hooping: 1. Select the hoop appropriate for the size of the embroidery design Select the appropriate INSPIRA Stabilizer for the design and fabric. Heavy weight water soluble stabilizer is the best choice for most cutwork. It disappears completely from the back of the fabric. Cut-Away for knits or a Tear-A-Way for wovens can also be used. Hoop the stabilizer with your fabric. The first stabilizer used will be cut cleanly away by the Cutwork Needles. The final stabilizer used, after the cutwork needles cut the fabric should be water soluble so it does not leave any frizzy edges sticking out of the satin stitching. 3. Slide your hoop onto your embroidery unit Designer Cutwork 4

99 23 Stitching: 1. For an even better result it is recommended that you use the Straight Stitch Plate and Sensor Q-foot when stitching designs with INSPIRA Cutwork Needles. The straight stitch plate gives better support during stitching and gives a more distinct cut and improved results, especially on fabric with high fiber strength. 2. Use the hole in the Multi Purpose Tool to insert the needle 24 Symbols: There are some new symbols that you will see in the cutwork design booklets. 25 This is the symbol you will see indicating the design has been digitized for Cutwork Needles This symbol indicates that water soluble stabilizer is required. This symbol indicates that this color will stitch the outline of the areas to be cut. This symbol indicates that now is the time to cut inside the stitched area if you are not using INSPIRA Cutwork Needles. (For some particularly delicate fabrics, you may want to trim the fabric manually. Test the design on your fabric first to assure the best results.) Needle #1 is color coded red, #2 is color coded yellow, #3 is color coded green and #4 is color coded blue This symbol indicates that INSPIRA Cutwork Needle is to be inserted now. The color indicates which needle to use. Only two needles may be used, or all four may be used depending on the design. The instructions will tell you which ones to use throughout the design Designer Cutwork 5

100 * This symbol indicates it is time to add INSPIRA Aqua Magic Water Soluble Stabilizer underneath. Slide one layer of Aqua Magic Stabilizer underneath the embroidery hoop. The bobbin thread is attached, so be sure it is pushed out of the way to allow the stabilizer to lay flat. This symbol indicates it is time to trim any remaining threads and remove the cut fabric. (Note that there is one color change stitched after the fabric is cut, BEFORE you remove the cut pieces. This is to stitch the cut area to the new stabilizer, before the cut pieces are removed.) This symbol indicates you are to finish your embroidery. This symbol reminds you to clean the bobbin area after each embroidery design. Indicates that this is a design that cannot be rotated or mirrored. 37 Embroider: Touch Embroidery Edit to toggle to embroidery Touch Start Menu Touch File Manager Touch Built-In Designs Touch List View 42 Select DL_127.vp Designer Cutwork 6

107 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #25 - Omnimotion Stitches Omnimotion Stitches are sideways feed stitches that enable you to make stitches up to 54.6mm wide instead of the standard 7mm stitch width. Your Omnimotion stitches are in menu K. Some of the Omnimotion stitches, are designed to stitch only once and have a STOP programmed into them. You can tell which ones they are because they come up as a single design, not a row of designs, and the STOP is lit Omnimotion stitches need to be sewn with either the S foot or the Clear View S-Foot (# ). These feet are very wide, and will enable your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe to feed properly. Omnimotion stitches are suitable for sewing on a strip of fabric that will then be inserted into a quilt or garment. They can be sewn on a garment, for example down a blouse front, provided the garment is relatively light weight and there are no seams or linings that will be in the area where the stitching will be. Omnimotion stitches are NOT suitable on bulky items such as finished quilts or quilt tops, or jackets with linings etc. If you want to use Omnimotion stitches on larger items, sew them in embroidery mode, which supports the bulk of the fabric and enables them to feed accurately because of the embroidery arm. Omnimotion Stitches in Sewing Mode: When sewing one of the Omnimotion stitches in sewing mode, begin by marking a line, using your Pictogram Pen, down the strip of fabric where it will be sewn. The beginning point of a design is not necessarily the center. If you look at our leaf design which we will stitch first, you will see the black dot indicating the start point of the design is to the right of center. Cut your strip of fabric wider than the finished project will require so you can re-cut the strip of fabric after the stitching is complete, centering the stitching. 114 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #26 - F Menu Appliqué Stitches F1 Appliqué Stitches Menu has a variety of stitches designed to do different types of appliqué. Some of the stitches are there as a convenience, such as the straight and zig zag stitches so that you can combine or choose them without going back to the A Menu. F1:9 is a decorative buttonhole you might like to use on your appliqué projects. Satin Stitch Appliqué: F1:3, F1:4 and F1:5 are satin stitches. They are formed differently than a standard zig zag. One stitch goes from left to right, then the next stitch travels. A regular zig zag travels on every stitch and isn t as satiny looking. Cut out a heart from cotton print. The heart is the perfect shape to practice appliqué because it has inside and outside corners, and curves. Place the cut heart on a piece of plain cotton. Pin or hold in place with Temporary Spray Adhesive. Place INSPIRA Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric. Select F1:4. Be sure your Sewing Advisor is set to Woven Medium. Thread with 40 wt. Robison Anton Rayon Thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Snap on your Clear B Foot. Align the fabric so that you are beginning at the point of the heart. Most of the stitch should be on the heart. The right swing of the needle should just go off the right hand edge of the heart as shown. The fabric needs to feed by itself, so you should not be helping it at all. The stitches should lay one right next to the other without space between them, and without overlapping. If necessary, adjust the stitch length one notch at a time until you have a nice stitch. As you approach the curve, sew slowly and move the fabric steadily and continuously around the curved area. This will result in nice, smooth stitching. Stitch approximately ¼ past the inside corner at the top center of the heart. Touch Needle Stop Down. The needle needs to stop on the left. Tap your foot control to move the needle to the left, if it has stopped in the right hand position F Menu Appliqué Stitches 1

115 12 Your needle is now down in the fabric and the presser foot is floating just above the fabric in Pivot position. Turn the fabric 90 so you are ready to start up the next side. You will begin by going over the end of the previous stitching. 13 At the end, stitch over the beginning stitches to the point of the heart and touch FIX. This will tie off the stitches so they don t unravel. 14 Select F1:13 15 Touch Mirror Side-to-Side. 16 Using the techniques you just learned, stitch around another heart using this grass satin stitch. 17 Using the same techniques, stitch around another heart using F1:14. This stitch has texture on both sides of the stitch F Menu Appliqué Stitches 2

116 18 The last heart will be stitched with F1:20. This stitch is a bit trickier. It stitches back and forth several times. When you reach the inside top corner, stop, and touch Stitch Restart. Pivot the fabric, and begin stitching down the other side. Hand Look Applique: Hand Look Applique was originally done by hand, turning under the raw edges of the fabric and blind stitching the shape in place. Sometimes a heavier contrasting thread was used and a blanket stitch was used instead of the invisible blind stitch. F1:11, F1:12, F1:15, F1:17, F1:18 and F1:19 can all be used for hand look appliqué To do Handlook Applique, the edges of the fabric need to be finished in some manner. One method is to place a fusible web such as Steam-A-Seam 2 on the back of the fabric, and fuse the appliqué shape in place. This prevents the raw edges of the fabric from fraying. Another method that we will use is to trace the appliqué shape onto a light weight interfacing. Begin by tracing four heart shapes onto a light weight fusible interfacing. 23 Place the traced interfacing onto the right side of print fabric. 24 Select F1:1, straight stitch. Stitch around the heart shape. 25 Repeat for all four hearts. 26 Trim around the hearts using your Pinking Shears. This will grade the curves quickly and easily. Clip into the inside corner F Menu Appliqué Stitches 3

117 27 Trim out the center of the heart so that there approximately ⅜ of interfacing left. 28 Turn and press so that the interfacing is not showing on the right side of the heart. You now have four hearts with finished edges. Doing it this way keeps the fabric soft and flexible. Fusing the hearts in place can leave them stiff Pin them onto a background fabric. 31 Select F1: Thread with smoke colored invisible thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Place INSPIRA Tear-A-Way Stabilizer underneath the fabric. 34 Stitch around the heart. The straight stitch portion of the stitch should be on the base fabric and only the left swing of the needle should come over onto the heart shape, forming a pick stitch. 35 Select F1:15. This stitch is very similar to F1:11. The difference is that F1:11 has two stitches in between the pick stitch. This one has only one. 36 Stitch around the next heart. Compare the two and decide which one you like best F Menu Appliqué Stitches 4

118 37 Select F1:17 38 On the top, thread with sewing thread to match the background color of your heart and bobbin thread in the bobbin. 39 Stitch around the next heart. The stitches should just sew off the edge of the heart, with most of the stitching being on the heart. This stitch is very secure and gives just a hint of an outline to the heart. It would be a good choice on a baby blanket that would be washed a lot. 40 Select F1:18. With sewing thread still in place, stitch around the last heart. This stitch has a defined outline stitch that will stitch just outside the heart, framing it nicely Place the large heart on lightweight sew in interfacing. 43 Select F1:1, straight stitch. Stitch around the heart shape Trim as before, turn and press. 47 Place the heart right sides together onto the print fabric. Place on a base fabric with INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer underneath. Thread with a contrasting 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. This stitch recommends a wing needle. This makes a very pretty appliqué for an heirloom project. You can stitch with a wing needle or with a regular needle. Stitch around the heart. The stitch goes back and forth several times resulting in a heavier blanket stitch look F Menu Appliqué Stitches 5

119 Tapered Satin Stitch Applique: Stitches F1:6 and F1:16 give you a nice tapered point. While these two options are the most often used, you have more options. Select F1:6. Adjust the Stitch Width to 6.0 On the paper side that does not remove easily, trace two large hearts onto Steam-A-Seam 2. Remove the un-traced paper side. Place the traced hearts on the wrong side of the heart fabric. Press lightly without steam. Cut out on the marked lines. Remove the paper backing. Place on base fabric and press with steam to fuse in place. Thread with 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Touch Tapering. The tapering menu will open. Our heart point is a 45 angle. So we will choose Begin taper 45 right justified. Choose End taper 45 right justified as shown. 60 Begin stitching at the point of the heart. Stitch around the edge, pivoting as before at the inner corner. 61 As you approach the beginning point, when the left swing of the needle meets the beginning taper, touch the Reverse Button. Stitch until your DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe stops. You now have a nicely mitered point on your heart F Menu Appliqué Stitches 6

120 62 F1:7 and F1:8 are decorative stitches that can be used as appliqué stitches. Cut a square and place it on a base fabric. Choose F1:8. 63 Thread with 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Place INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer underneath the fabric. Stitch so one square is on the fabric and one is off the fabric. The raw edge will be down the center of the stitch. 64 On another square, touch F1:7. 65 Touch Mirror Side-to-Side. 66 Stitch so that the straight edge of the stitch is just off the raw edge of the fabric. 67 On a third square, select stitch F1: Adjust the stitch length to 5.0 and the stitch width to Stitch so that the right swing of the needle just goes off the edge of the appliqué fabric. This gives the effect of a blanket stitch, but the narrow satin stitch finishes the raw edge of the fabric F Menu Appliqué Stitches 7

121 DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Techniques #27 - H Menu Scallop Stitches The H menus (1, 2 and 3) have a variety of different scallop stitches with many different uses and techniques. Some are Omnimotion stitches, some are satin stitches and some are straight stitches. Omnimotion Scallop Stitches H1:1 through H1:15, H1:17 and H1:18 are all Omnimotion Stitches. Snap on your S Foot. Cut a strip of fabric 3 x 20. Using your Pictogram Pen, mark a line down the center of it. Select the stitch of your choice, from H1:1 through H1:15, H1:17 and H1:18. 122 Smaller Satin Stitch Scallop Stitches: H1:16, H2:19 to H2:33 and H2:36 are all smaller satin stitch scallop stitches. These stitches can be used to finish an edge, and can be trimmed up to. Snap on your B Foot. Remain threaded with 40 wt. rayon thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. On another 3 x 20 strip, using your Pictogram Pen, mark a line down the center. Align the red mark on your B Foot with the marked line and stitch the stitch of your choice down the strip. Keep the red mark on the foot aligned with the marked line as you sew. Apply Fray Blocking liquid just below the stitching so it will seep into the edge of the thread. Allow to dry. Trim carefully, just outside the stitching line. Straight Stitch Scallops: H2:34 and H2:35 are straight stitch scallops. They will give you a turned, finished edge. Cut a strip of cotton 4 x 20. Fold in half lengthwise, right sides together. Select either H2:34 or H2:35. Note the presser foot called for on the Ultimate Interactive Screen. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. Align the edge of the foot with the fold in the fabric. Stitch the length of the strip. Trim approximately ⅛ from the stitching. Clip into the points, turn and press. The remaining stitches on the H3 menu are decorative scallop stitches and are not designed to finish an edge. They are used like any other decorative stitch H Menu Scallop Stitches 2

155 HUSQVARNA VIKING DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe Technique 35 Specialty Embroidery Techniques By Marie Duncan Learn about the specialty embroidery techniques in your HUSQVARNA VIKING DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe sewing and embroidery machine. We will explore two of the many different special technique embroidery designs that came with your HUSQVARNA VIKING DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe, THREAD VELVET embroidery and Yarn Couching. THREAD VELVET embroidery is a technique pioneered by HUSQVARNA VIKING that builds up layers of thread, which will then be cut using a special surgical type of seam ripper after the embroidery is complete, creating a velvet texture. Here are some tips to ensure optimum results when doing THREAD VELVET embroidery. Use 40 wt. Robison-Anton rayon embroidery thread. Cotton or polyester threads will not bloom as nicely and won t have the soft, velvety texture that rayon produces. Use an INSPIRA Size 90 topstitch needle or INSPIRA Size 90 embroidry needle. Thread velvet builds up layers of satin stitches and a needle with a larger eye will help prevent broken needles and thread shredding. If thread breakage occurs, slow down the speed of the machine. ALWAYS use your Sensor Q-foot. Because of the hopping nature of the Sensor Q-foot, it allows the bulk of the thread velvet layers to stitch smoothly, without any problems or distortions. Use the colors recommended or, a similar combination. For example if the colors recommended are light and medium rust, substitute light and medium pink in the same order. Usually, two completely different colors such as red and blue don t come out well, but try a test and you just may like it! When the embroidery is complete, place it on a flat surface such as a cutting mat and cut through the top layers using a specialty seam ripper like the Havel Ultra Pro Seam Ripper ( ). You can tell the portions of the embroidery to be cut because they are satin stitched with a straight stitch just inside the edge as shown. If the embroidered item is going to be washed, apply fray blocking liquid or fabric glue on the wrong side of the embroidery and allow to dry. Your THREAD VELVET embroidery will fluff up and bloom by itself, from the humidity in the air. If you want to speed up the process, hold a steam iron over the top (don t touch the iron to the threads) and steam it instant gratification! 2011 KSIN Luxembourg II, S.ar.l. 156 Yarn Couching is another specialty embroidery technique pioneered by HUSQVARNA VIKING. Here are some tips to ensure optimum results when doing yarn couching. Yarn Couching requires a special foot. The Yarn Couching Feet Set ( ) contains two feet, one with a 1mm opening and one with a 2mm opening. Use a yarn that is firmly twisted and smooth textured. Anything with loops or slubs will get stuck. The best way to choose a yarn is to take the feet with you and test the yarn in the foot. It should fill the opening, but flow freely without getting hung up. Use a thread that matches the yarn or an invisible thread on top. The objective is to see the yarn, not the stitches. The Yarn Couching Feet are floating feet, not hopping feet like the Sensor Q-foot. Be sure to deactivate the Sensor Q-foot setting in the Set Menu when using the Yarn Couching Feet. The Yarn Couching Feet can also be used free motion. Thread the same as for embroidery and stitch free motion. Sewing Supplies: 12 long x 20 wide piece of linen INSPIRA Tear-A-Way Stabilizer wt. Robison-Anton rayon embroidery thread Bobbin thread Yarn Let s Embroider: 1. Toggle to Embroidery mode. 2. Touch My Hoops. 3. Select the 360mm x 200mm. 4. Touch Start Menu. 5. Open File Manager. 6. Touch Built-in Designs. 7. Touch List View. List view enables you to toggle between seeing the actual embroidery picture and the design number. In this case, since you are choosing by number, it is easiest to use list view. 8. Select designs 198, 58 and KSIN Luxembourg II, S.ar.l. 157 9. Touch. 10. Tap the screen twice outside the boxes to deselect the designs. 11. Leave design 198 centered in the hoop. 12. Touch Step through Designs to highlight design 58 (the pink one) 13. Move to the lower left as shown. 14. Touch Move Design Forward twice. 15. Touch Rotate. 16. Bring it around so the stem is towards the center of the brown leaves as shown. 17. Touch Position and use control arrows to fine tune the placement. 18. Touch Duplicate. 19. Move the duplicated design to the right side of the hoop. 20. Touch Mirror Side-to-Side. 21. Rotate as neccesary and Move to final position following the picture. 22. Touch Step through Designs to select design Touch Move Design Forward once. 24. Rotate as neccesary and Move to final position following the picture If desired, touch Save to My Designs. 26. Touch. 27. Touch and hold Delete. 28. Enter yarn and velvet. 29. 158 30. Touch to save the design. 31. Hoop fabric and two layers of tear-a-way stabilizer in your 360 x 200 hoop. 32. Thread with 40 wt. Robison-Anton rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. 33. Slide on the hoop and touch. 34. Embroider the first two colors which are the leaves. Then embroider the third color which is the stem. 35. Next to colors 4 and 5 in the Embroidery Design booklet that comes with your HUSQVARNA VIKING DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe sewing and embroidery machine you will see a symbol couching colors.. This means that those last two colors are yarn 36. Remove the Sensor Q-foot and re-attach the ankle. 37. Because the Yarn Couching Feet are sensor feet (floating) and not hopping like the Sensor Q-foot, you need deactivate the Sensor Q-foot for embroidery. Open the Set Menu and Machine Settings Remove the check mark beside. 38. Follow the directions below to stitch the last two colors. Prepare the machine for yarn couching: 1. Thread the machine with thread that matches the yarn, or with invisible thread. 2. Attach the proper yarn guides for your machine to the notches under the handles on the rear side of the machine (fig. 1) 3. Pull out as much yarn as you need from the ball of yarn and puddle it as shown in fig Place the yarn in the yarn guides (see fig. 2). It is very important that the yarn runs easily while you are sewing. You might need to guide the yarn through the yarn guides to make sure that it does not get twisted KSIN Luxembourg II, S.ar.l. DESIGNER DIAMOND DELUXE, THREAD VELEVT, VIKING and INSPIRA are trademarks of KSIN Luxembourg II, S.ar.l. HUSQVARNA is a trademark of Husqvarna AB. All trademarks used under license by VSM Group AB.

159 5. Choose yarn couching foot 1 or 2 depending on the size of the yarn. 6. Thread the yarn from above, through the hole in the foot using the yarn threader (see fig. 3). 7. Snap on the foot. 8. Lower the speed on your HUSQVARNA VIKING DESIGNER DIAMOND deluxe sewing and embroidery machine. 9. Hold the yarn end and start embroidering. 10. When the embroidery is complete you can either cut the yarn ends or thread them onto a double eyed needle and pull them to the back of the fabric. 11. The remainder of the colors are the THREAD VELVET. 12. Reactivate the Sensor Q-foot for embroidery. Open the Set Menu and Machine Settings Place the check mark beside. 13. Remove the ankle and attach the Sensor Q-foot. 14. Stitch, choosing colors that compliment your yarn couched design KSIN Luxembourg II, S.ar.l.
