1 CommScope Tool-less IDC Instruction Sheet Connector Block Issue 3, February 2004 Material ID General This instruction sheet provides general procedures for mounting Tool-less Insulation Displacement Connection (TIDC) blocks and making the associated electrical connections. The enclosed kit includes TIDC blocks and mounting screws. Procedures for mounting and wiring the TIDC blocks are described. However, the kit does not include any wire. Customers should develop their own hardware for packaging and mounting the parts supplied in this kit. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 for additional information. 2 Instruction Sheet Mounting Panel Design The TIDC blocks can be mounted using two approaches; flush-mounting using four screws, or low profile mounting where the TIDC block slips into the hole cut in the panel and only requires two screws for mounting. Figure 1 shows the opening in the panel required to mount the TIDC block for both low profile and flush mount for the 25 - and 50 -pair TIDC blocks. The low profile is the preferred mounting approach if the panel thickness is less than inches (1.778 mm) where inches ( mm) is the ideal thickness. If the panel is thicker than inches (1.778 mm), then flush mount the TIDC blocks. Figure 1. Openings in Customer Supplied Base Plate for Mounting Both Profile Approaches Page 2

3 Mounting the TIDC Block to a Panel Using Low Profile Method Material ID Issue 3, February From the front of the panel, tilt the TIDC at about a 30-degree angle and slip the bottom edge into the panel catching under the cutout. Refer to Figure Install two screws for 50 pair unit or one screw for the 25 pair unit to complete the mounting as shown in Figures 2 and 4. Figure 2. Low Profile Approach for TIDC Block Mounting Mounting the TIDC Block to a Panel using Flush Mount Method 1. Place the TIDC block on panel and align with holes. 2. 4 Instruction Sheet Figure 4. Screw positions for the TIDC Block Wiring the back of the TIDC block 1. Identify the associated tip and ring wire-wrap pins on the rear of the TIDC connector block. Refer to Figure Strip the incoming wire and wire-wrap to the pins of the TIDC block. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for all pins. Operating the TIDC 1. Press on top edge to release lock and pull up to open. Figure 5. TIDC Open Position 2. Insert wires fully into holes. Look through clear plastic to ensure that wires are fully inserted. 3. While holding wires in place, push down on TIDC to close. 5 Issue 3, February 2004 Figure 6. TIDC Closed Position 4. Push installed wires between rows of contacts and through TIDC wire guides. Multiple Connections (Daisy Chaining) with the TIDC Block 1. Ensure there is sufficient wire to accomplish both connections. 2. Make a small bend in the wire as shown in Figure 7. Bend in Wire Figure 7. Wire Position 3. Insert the wire into the first TIDC contact and push firmly to force the wire out the back of the contact. Refer to Figure Once the wire extends from the back, pull the wire through. 5. Straighten the end of the wire or cut off the bent tip and insert into the next TIDC contact. Figure 8. Daisy Chain Configuration Page 5

6 Instruction Sheet 6. Close both contacts to make the electrical connection. 7. Dress the slack wire between the rows of TIDC contacts.
