3 Today s technology allows for a variety of components to be IMPREGNATION manufactured from such elements as aluminum, bronze, brass, iron, platic and other materials. But as a consequence, the incidence of porosity has increased. Untreated porosity can lead to leakage of fluids and gases, plating defects, reduced machine tool life, and a high scrap ratio. Impregnation is beneficial for sealing porosity prior to plating, conversion coating, painting and other surface finishes. When porosity is intricate and deep, casting are likely to create air pockets which are totally undetectable by the human eye. Through the use of impregnation compound and a black light, air pockets can be detected. Fort Wayne Anodizing uses a vacuum system to draw air and volatile materials from the porosity. Once the vacuum has withdrawn the air from the component, a liquid sealant A porosity problem, hidden to the naked eye, is solved. This part is magnified to show the impregnation compound which glows under a black light. is drawn into the porosity, creating an air tight seal. Impregnation is the fastest and most effective method of eliminating the problems of porosity and interior corrosion in metal castings, forgings, powdered metal parts, and plastics. In fact, Fort Wayne Anodizing can recover up to 95% or more of your rejects. We offer both dry (vacuum and pressure) and wet (vacuum only) vacuum processes. We ll evaluate your specific needs to determine which method is best suited. More and more manufacturers are specifying impregnation for all parts, not just for purposes of salvage, but as a part of their guarantee against defects. As illustrated to the right, porosity is generally classified in three ways: enclosed porosity, blind porosity and through porosity. In hard anodizing (or hard coating), as in conventional anodizing, aluminum or aluminum alloy is subjected to an electrochemical process that forms a layer of aluminum oxide. However, in hard anodizing the layer of of aluminum oxide is much thicker. This layer of aluminum oxide becomes an integral part of the metal. It forms equally on and in the aluminum surface. For instance, a.002 inch coating will add.001 inch above the surface and will penetrate.001 below the surface. The result is an extremely hard inert coating, with surface resistance comparable to C-60, C-70 Rockwell and corrosion resistance comparable to stainless steel. 5 Anodizing is an electrochemical process that causes aluminum oxide to form to a desired thickness on the surface of ANODIZING aluminum and aluminum alloys. Anodizing adds strength, wear and corrosion resistance, beauty and other properties to aluminum s comparatively low cost, light weight and malleability. The anodizing process involves a complex sequence of operations that must occur under carefully controlled conditions. Because each alloy anodizes differently, every step in the process requires knowledge and attention to detail, from the proper preparation of parts to the mixture of chemical compounds, to the regulation of electrical current and temperature. This basic process can be varied to produce different anodic finishes. These finishes are generally classified as chromic (Type I), sulfuric (Type II), hard coating (Type III), and conversion coating. Sulfuric anodizing adds corrosion and abrasion resistance and dielectric strength to aluminum. Conversion coatings, unlike anodic finishes, maintain conductivity.
