9 HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A SMOOTH SURFACE? Chemical and mechanical polishing Chemical polishing This is a way of removing metal from the surface of the jewellery by chemical reaction. 19 DISC FINISHING MACHINES Process parameters Process time is the most important parameter for a good result. Too short grinding time results in high surface roughness and leaves the sandpaper lines on the surface. Too long process time will damage the jewellery by rounding the edges, cutting the prongs or removing the surface decoration on some parts Even if it does not harm the design, you lose more metal than necessary. 21
