Constitutional Rights Foundation Mission Statement Constitutional Rights Foundation seeks to instill in our nation s youth a deeper understanding of citizenship through values expressed in our Constitution and its Bill of Rights, and educate young people to become active and responsible participants in our society. CRF is dedicated to assuring our country s future by investing in our youth today.

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOUNDATION FORTY YEARS OF SERVICE Jerome L. Coben President 2002 was a monumental year for Constitutional Rights Foundation. Celebrating 40 years of serving young people, we found ourselves on the front lines of an urgent call to educate America s youth about the profound changes that have shaken the nation and the world. CRF is not a newcomer to this type of challenge. When CRF was founded 40 years earlier, America stood poised on the brink of another memorable era. Faced with pressing questions of free speech, equality, and due process of law, a fledgling CRF staff of five set out to improve the teaching of the Bill of Rights in California schools. Guided by a 17-member board of directors and supported by a $39,000 budget, the young organization set about to implement its newly established educational goals. CRF mounted lobbying efforts before the State Board of Education, established a Bill of Rights advisory board, sponsored civic-education training sessions for teachers, and expedited the distribution of Bill of Rights teaching materials. Currently, the efforts of CRF s 34 staff members are supported by a $3 million budget and guided by a 67-member board of directors. CRF maintains 17 programs in seven school- and community-based thematic areas that help teachers touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of students in Los Angeles, California, the nation, and the world. Todd Clark Executive Director In Los Angeles for example, the Youth Internship Program placed scores of qualified urban students in law firms, businesses, government offices, and non-profit organizations. At the state level, CRF coordinated the 22nd Annual California State Mock Trial Competition, involving 8,500 students and 2,000 lawyer and teacher volunteers. Nationally, four editions of CRF s acclaimed curricular newsletter, Bill of Rights in Action, reached 32,000 American educators, while the constantly evolving CRF web site attracted 99,000 visitors, up from 26,000 in On the global scale, CRF hosted exchanges between U.S. educators and their counterparts from Poland, Russia, and Lithuania through the Democracy Education Exchange Project. Cops and Kids, Teaching American History, Free Expression in a Free Society, the Summer Law Institute, all represent the far-reaching range, diverse scope, and exemplary quality of Constitutional Rights Foundation programs and materials. As we move into 2003 and open the first pages of a new and challenging chapter for American democracy, CRF will continue to fulfill a vital role in educating tomorrow s citizens. 1

What is CRF? Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to helping our nation s young people become engaged and participatory citizens and understand the rule of law, the legal process, and their constitutional heritage. Established in 1962, CRF is guided by a dedicated board of directors drawn from the worlds of law, business, government, education, and the media. CRF s professional staff includes teachers and educators, lawyers, editors and writers, and youth development specialists. Volunteers provide vital support for many CRF programs and activities and serve as adult models for our youthful participants. To accomplish its goals and objectives, CRF applies its resources to seven areas: MOCK TRIAL. In 1980, CRF introduced a statewide mock trial program to help California students learn about our judicial system. Each year, CRF develops and distributes a new mock trial case to participants in 36 California counties. CRF administers the Los Angeles County and statewide mock trial competitions. Today, CRF s mock trial program involves 8500 students and 2000 lawyer and teacher volunteers. Participant Quotes Mock trial taught me about the legal system and inspired me to consider law school.... helped me with presentations and taught me about law and teamwork.... was a great experience and it s fun. HISTORY DAY. Moving far beyond names and dates, History Day students research historical issues, ideas, and people and apply what they have learned to their own research papers and displays, media productions, performances, and web pages. CRF s History Day program reaches 40,000 students from 31 California counties. Participant Quotes I view history in a totally different light. History Day provides its children with determination, thoroughness, analysis, creativity, curiosity, and a love of history. History Day was the reason I majored in history. 2

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION. Youth Leadership for Action, CRF s L.A.-based leadership program, attracts young people who want to address community problems with positive change. Civic participation programs such as CityYouth, ACT, and the Maurice R. Robinson Mini-Grant Program enable thousands of students to plan and implement projects to meet real community needs. Participant Quotes We found out the many different things we can do to overcome community problems. We learned that others are experiencing the same problems as my community. I get to teach young people my age something educational. YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. This CRF program places qualified urban students in law firms, businesses, government offices, and non-profit organizations. Students gain valuable work experience and attend seminars designed to help them serve as school and community leaders. Participant Quotes The best part is being exposed to the real world by having a real job. I feel older and wiser. I enjoy feeling professional. I love working downtown. TEACHER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Good teaching requires well-developed tools and strategies. CRF offers a wide variety of teacher-training and other professional-development workshops in law and government and civic participation. CRF s professional development efforts include: Teaching American History provides curricular materials and teaching tools and strategies to fifth-, eighth-, and eleventh-grade history teachers in Los Angeles. Participant Quote The program entices me to make American History more interesting for the students. I want to bring to my students what you brought to us through these trainings. The Democracy Education Exchange Project, hosted by CRF in partnership with other U.S. civic education groups, brings educators together from the United States, Eastern Europe, and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. Participant Quotes I have many impressions of the educational and other cultural aspects of U.S. society. [DEEP] was, in one word, exciting. When we compare our democracies, we stand face to face and we look into each other s eyes. It is very human. The DEEP program was well arranged for a profound exchange of experience. (Continued on next page) 3

YOUTH CONFERENCES. CRF offers a compelling series of youth forums as effective means for educating young people about vital public policy and community issues. For example: Cops & Kids conferences provide young people with a chance to take a walk in an officer s shoes and express their views about police-community relations. By taking the role of coaches and mentors, police officers develop a better understanding of the youth they serve. Participant Quotes I learned that officers have a desire to work with us. I learned that I could make great changes in my community. I learned that kids want to improve community relations as much as we do. Summer Law Institute is a week-long immersion program offering workshops and classes on the First Amendment, capital punishment, using law to create social change, and how the media affects our justice system. Co-hosted by UCLA, CRF s Summer Law Institute has reached 150 high school students, the majority on scholarships. Participant Quotes I gained a lot of knowledge and insight into my future. The students were energetic and participated vigorously. I learned to see different sides of an argument. PUBLICATIONS. CRF publishes educational texts and materials on law and government, civic participation, U.S. and world history, and current issues. CRF s acclaimed curricular newsletter, Bill of Rights in Action, reached 32,000 educators quarterly. The constantly evolving CRF web site, attracted 99,000 visitors, up from 26,000 in Participant Quotes Bill of Rights in Action is the most useful publication I receive. Thanks for providing such balanced and extensive materials. Your War in Iraq web lessons helped me offer my students objective support instead of my own feelings. 4

Endowment Builders Endowments ensure the future of a non-profit organization. Since 1990, CRF has been fortunate to receive a number of endowments given by people who share our mission: to instill in our nation s youth a deeper understanding of citizenship through values expressed in our Constitution and its Bill of Rights and to educate young people to become active and responsible participants in our society. In 1990, CRF established its first endowment program with the help of the California Community Foundation and a past president of CRF, Alan I. Rothenberg. The Alan I. Rothenberg Endowment was initiated by friends and colleagues of the Rothenberg family to support one of Alan s favorite CRF programs, the Los Angeles County Mock Trial Competition. Since 1991, members of the Rothenberg family have presented the Alan I. Rothenberg Award to each year s top mock trial student litigator. CRF endowments have also been established in the names of two former CRF presidents, Jerome C. Byrne and James A. Cobey. Through the Jerome C. Byrne Publications Endowment and the James A. Cobey Endowment families and friends of these two men have expressed their admiration and respect by supporting the organization that had meant so much to these men during their lifetimes. The Byrne endowment helps fund the development and publication of CRF s educational materials. The Cobey endowment enables CRF to honor its many law-related volunteers with an annual luncheon. Robert Henigson, a longtime CRF board member, who initially chaired the planned giving committee, often expressed his belief in the importance and value of endowments to a nonprofit organization. Bob and his wife Phyllis established the Phyllis and Robert Henigson Endowment to benefit students in CRF s Youth Internship Program. The Henigsons also gave CRF two Life Income Gifts for which we continue to be most appreciative. Jack Stutman, another longtime CRF board member, chaired the capital campaign that enabled CRF to purchase its offices and has been remembered by his partners, family and friends with the Jack Stutman Endowment. This program annually honors all the volunteers, students and their families, and corporate supporters of our Youth Internship Program. CRF is also grateful to Dr. Jama Laurent and the Creative Kids Foundation for establishing an endowment at CRF that annually places interns in Los Angeles-based arts organizations. The final word on CRF endowments must belong to our greatest champion, Lloyd M. Smith. Lloyd carried the CRF banner with pride, dedication, and good humor, from its beginnings in 1962 until his death in Throughout his long life, Lloyd embodied the highest ideals of American democracy and insisted that young people be educated about their constitutional heritage, rights, and responsibilities. Accordingly, he established the CRF Endowment, ensuring that CRF s mission to educate tomorrow s citizens will continue. CRF also thanks those individuals who have indicated that they will remember CRF in their will or by bequest: Bette Bardeen, William J. Bogaard, Louis Colen, Knox M. Cologne, Marjorie Fasman, Raymond C. Fisher, Alan V. Friedman, Robert Henigson, William P. Hogoboom, Leslie Lobaugh, Meyer Luskin, Vivian Monroe, Marvin Sears, and K. Eugene Shutler. To all of the above friends of CRF, we appreciate the generosity you have demonstrated and thank you on behalf of the students of this community, the nation, and the world. We salute you all. 11
