3 The Election of 1988 I. In 1988 Reagan s VP George H.W. Bush ran as the Republican candidate for president A. USA is still largely a conservative nation II. Bush ran against Democrat Michael Dukakis from Massachusetts III. Bush easily won the election in 1988 promising to keep Reagan s social, political and economic policies in place A. Most famously Bush promised the American people NO NEW TAXES

6 H.W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION I. The Persian Gulf War: A. In August of 1990 Saddam Hussein (the leader of Iraq) claimed the nation of Kuwait belonged to Iraq B. Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990 beginning the Persian Gulf War C. In January 1991 President H.W. Bush launched Operation Desert Storm to free Kuwait fro Iraqi control D. The U.S. bombed Iraqi forces and then led a massive ground invasion to take back Kuwait E. A cease-fire announced on February 28, Kuwait was liberated. F. Saddam Hussein was left in control of Iraq (not great for the U.S.)

However an economic recession began in 1990 and Bush was forced to raise taxes. (which he promised to not do) A. American people are unhappy with Bush for lying & taxes C. Unemployment & poverty rose during the Bush years and many Americans grew unhappy with his leadership

The recession in the early 90s forced Bush to raise taxes leading to a large drop in his approval rating C. 12 years of Republican leadership came to an end in 1992 D. Bill Clinton a Democrat from Arkansas defeated Bush in 1992

12 CLINTON ADMINISTRATION III. Clinton & the Economy A. Under Clinton s leadership the US economy improved during the 1990 s B. During the Clinton administration the U.S. successfully balanced the budget and the federal govt. had a surplus first time in 30 years C. Unemployment fell, the stock market rose & fewer people relied on public aid D. NAFTA was created to strengthen economies of Canada, US and Mexico i. North American Free Trade Agreement ii. iii. Allows goods to moved between US + Mexico + Canada without paying tariffs or taxes US can get goods cheaply from Mexico including food & cars

13 CLINTON ADMINISTRATION IV. Clinton s Scandal A. Clinton easily won reelection in 1996 but Republicans took control of Congress B. Clinton and Congress fought over the economy and social issues i. Liberal vs. Conservative C. The Monica Lewinsky scandal then led to Clinton being impeached i. Clinton lied under oath about having sexual relations with an intern D. Senate did not get two-thirds majority to convict Clinton and remove him from office

14 CLINTON ADMINISTRATION V Election A. Clinton s VP Al Gore (D) won the popular vote over George W. Bush (R) B. A vote recount in FL gave Bush more electoral votes & a win in the election C. Bush s brother was governor of FL and the recount was ended in Dec. of 2000 by SCTOUS

Islamic Fundamentalist terrorists from Al-Qaeda flew 2 planes into the World Trade Center in NYC, 1 into the Pentagon in Washington DC and one crashed outside of Philadelphia B. Osama bin Laden the leader of Al-Qaeda planned the attacks and roughly 3,000 Americans were killed in the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor C. The Bush administration increased antiterrorism measures i. US forces went to Afghanistan to get rid of terrorism & still there today!!!! ii. The US joined the War on terror nations fighting to rid the world of terrorist cells

Passed No Child Left Behind holding schools accountable for struggling students C. Passed a 350 billion dollar tax cut to stimulate the economy D. Bush won reelection in 2004 E. Americans grew unhappy with Bush during his second term i. Invasion of Iraq, handling of Hurricane Katrina, Spying on US citizens

24 OBAMA ADMINISTRATION I. Obama s Domestic/Foreign Issues A. Obama inherited the most expensive war debt in US history B. In 2008 the American economy entered into a recession C. Obama worked to to fix a broken health care system in US i. Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) D. Approved mission that found and killed Osama bin Laden (Sept. 11) E. The USA experienced a Housing crisis in 2008: home prices went down & people couldn t afford their mortgages anymore i. Banks who had lent people money for mortgages that could not afford them failed and the US government issued a 700,000,000,000 bailout to save banks ii. Considered the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression

25 OBAMA ADMINISTRATION I. Election of 2016 A. Republican businessman Donald Trump defeated Democratic former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton B. Trump lost the popular vote by almost 3,000,000 people C. The US demonstrated the need for political change with Trump s election

28 TRUMP ADMINISTRATION I. Trump Domestic/Foreign Issues A. Trump & Republican Congress attempted to fix healthcare concerns in the US i. American Healthcare Act B. Trump appointed a conservative Supreme Court justice à Neil Gorsuch C. A Trump signed an Executive Order limiting travel visas from Muslim nations i. This was then blocked by Federal courts as unconstitutional D. His administration is under an ongoing investigation for campaign ties to Russia i. National Security advisor Michael Flynn fired, Fired FBI director James Comey, Special investigator appointed
