1 Career Day in Pharmaceutical Sciences 2015 Bios Morning Session Talk Session (Madeleine Parent room, SSMU Building) 9:30 am 10:30 am Alternative Paths: Entrepreneurship and Innovation by Dr. Cliff Pavlovic (Consultant at Innovation Quebec; Vice-President and Co- Founder of BioTech Annecto) An entrepreneur, an executive, and a professional in the knowledge economy, Cliff is experienced in the development and commercialization of technologies and the implementation of intellectual property (IP) and R&D strategies. Also the author of a comparative study of technology transfer in Quebec and Flanders, co-author of a research inventory study of an academic institution, as well as a speaker/lecturer on IP, networking, and innovation. Now working with startups and organizations, either as an executive or as a consultant, he had previously worked as an Intellectual Property Rights Officer at KU Leuven Research & Development, the technology transfer unit of KU Leuven University (Leuven, Belgium), and as a Technology Transfer Project Leader at Gestion Univalor, the technology transfer firm responsible for commercializing innovations from Université de Montréal and affiliated institutions. Member of the StartUp Montreal steering committee (part of StartUp Canada), he holds a PhD in Experimental Medicine and an MSc in Microbiology & Immunology from McGill University (Montréal, QC), as well as a BSc in Microbiology from Université Laval (Québec, QC). Cliff is also one of the founders, as well as Vice-President, of BioTech Annecto (previously known as BioTech Montréal), a professional social networking organization reaching out to over 3200 professionals who are in and related to the biotechnology field (including pharmaceutical, healthcare and biomedical, cosmetics, agribusiness, and environmental). Launched in Montréal in 2009, events are also held in Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver.

2 10:30 am 11:30 am Networking in Pharmaceutical Industry by Dr. Nathalie Toussaint (Principal Scientist of Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences, Merck & Co, Newark, NJ) Nathalie Y. Toussaint, Ph.D. is a Principal Scientist in Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences at Merck Research Laboratories in Kenilworth, NJ. She obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics at the University Of Florida College Of Pharmacy through the mentorship of Dr. Sean Sullivan. She received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science from SUNY Buffalo. She previously worked as a Research Investigator in Discovery Pharmaceutics at Bristol-Myers Squibb for 5 years where she was responsible for physical-chemical characterization, and preclinical formulation on new chemical entities. In 2012, she joined the Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences at Merck Research Laboratories. At Merck she supports discovery deliverables and is responsible for design and delivery of molecules with drug-like properties with respect to human dose prediction, solubility, permeability, and absorption characteristics in collaboration with discovery. Nathalie is active member of AAPS and is a member of several sections; Physical Pharmacy and Biopharmaceutics, Discovery Development Interface and Biotec sections. Nathalie currently serves on the AAPS Biotec leadership team and the SPOD committee. She is also a member of Drug Information Association, and is a member of the Regulatory Affairs Community. 11:30 am 12:30 pm From Classroom to Office: Clinical Research as a Career by Vatche Bartekian (President and Founder of Vantage BioTrials Inc.; Chairperson of Clinical Research Association of Canada, Montreal Chapter) Vatche Bartekian is President and Founder of Vantage BioTrials, a privately-held Canadian CRO, in Prior to this venture, he held several management positions with companies such as Pfizer, Covance, PPD, LAB Pharma, and MDS Pharma. He's contributed his strong clinical drug development knowledge to the pharma and clinical research industry for over 17 years and has gained vast experience handling complicated trials across an array of therapeutic areas. He's an expert in Clinical Operations, Project Management, Quality Assurance and Monitoring, and holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and a M.Sc. Administration from Concordia University.

3 Mr. Bartekian is also the Chairperson of the Clinical Research Association of Canada and has held this position for the past 4 years. In addition, he sits on the Advisory Board for an innovative start-up company called Curebox, whose goal is to connect patients with specific diseases to the right clinical trials for their needs, using a user-friendly platform. He is an avid public speaker and an active member of SoCRA (Society of Clinical Research Associates), CSPS (Canadian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences), MAGI, and the Quebec Association of Clinical Research Nurses and Professionals. Afternoon Session Mentor Me Over Coffee (Madeleine Parent room, SSMU Building) Camil Sayegh, Director Head of Biology (Vertex Pharmaceuticals) Camil Sayegh is currently a Director and head of the department of Biology at the Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Canada) research site located in Laval. His primary responsibilities are to oversee research efforts aimed at discovering novel medicines for serious diseases including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Camil began his career in the pharmaceutical industry in 2004 after joining the Merck Frosst research site in Montreal (Canada) as an In Vivo Pharmacology Senior Research Scientist in Respiratory/Inflammation. Camil spent 2 years specializing in in vivo gene knockdown approaches and studying mechanisms of lung fibrosis. Subsequently, Camil moved to the department of biochemistry and led a major therapeutic program focused on developing inhaled kinase inhibitors as a treatment for severe asthma. In 2009, the research at the Merck Frosst site was realigned to infectious diseases and Camil was tasked with leading efforts aimed at curing patients from HIV infection. Following the closure of the Merck Frosst research site in Dec 2010, Camil joined Vertex Pharmaceutical s as an associate director of Biology. Camil obtained his Ph.D. in 2001 in Microbiology and Immunology at the McGill University located in Montreal (Canada), studying B cell development and immunoglobulin repertoire diversification. He then pursued CIHR funded postdoctoral studies at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) studying the role of bhlh transcription factors in regulating B cell development and function. Camil is currently pursuing a minimba at the McGill University Desautels Faculty of Management. Brian John Capogrosso, LL.B (Associate, Norton Rose Fulbright LLP) Brian John Capogrosso practises in all areas of intellectual property law, as well as in the information technology and life sciences sectors. Mr. Capogrosso has experience in licensing, distribution and outsourcing agreements, and litigation before the Federal Court and the Quebec Superior Court, including proceedings related to patent infringement, Canada s Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations, contractual disputes and privacy rights. Mr. Capogrosso also has experience with Health

4 Canada s product safety guidelines, Quebec prescription drug legislation and Canadian food and drug legislation. During his law studies, Mr. Capogrosso participated in our secondment program, which gave him the opportunity to intern for a year in the legal department of Groupe Aeroplan (now AIMIA) and gain valuable experience in a corporate setting. Prior to his legal studies, Mr. Capogrosso studied biochemistry at McGill University. Anne-Marie Fay, Manager of Medical Education and Communications (Bristol-Myers Squibb) Anne-Marie Fay graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology. It was her interest in drug development which led her to complete a PhD in 2008 from McGill University in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. She also participated in a European Summer School at the Neurocentre Magendie in Bordeaux (France). When not in the lab, she could be found enjoying teaching small group sessions for medical and graduate students or playing in team sports. Anne-Marie has received numerous scholarships, prizes and awards totaling over $ recognizing her work. Notably, she was awarded a CHIR postdoctoral fellowship to pursue her curiosity for drug design in animal models at the Montreal Neurological Institute. After deciding to take a few years away from work to raise her two children, she joined Bristol-Myers Squibb as an Intern in Medical Affairs last year. Anne-Marie has recently been promoted to Manager of Medical Education and Communications for Canada and is welcoming this new exciting challenge which brings together her passion for education and medicine. Jean-Claude Honore (Regional Medical Liaison, Amgen) Marta Majdan, Medical Science Liaison (Merck & Co, Canada) Caroline Rousseau, Scientific and Medical Specialist (Q-CROC) Caroline is a clinical research professional with over 10 years of broad clinical research experience in the fields of oncology & hematology. In 2003, following her PhD in Experimental Medicine, she began her career as a Clinical Research Coordinator in the early-phase unit of the Jewish General Hospital. There she gained experience in broad therapeutic areas, and quickly became involved in the development and management of investigator-initiated trials, of which resulted many publications. In 2009, she joined the Quebec Clinical Research Organization in Cancer (Q-CROC) and as one of its first employees, was involved in many aspect of the company's strategic and scientific orientations, network-building and operations. While working at Q-CROC, Caroline completed the McGill Comprehensive PM Course. In 2014, Caroline joined Exactis Innovation, a non-profit organization having the mission of improving cancer outcomes through research. As Medical Advisor, she was involved in the development of Exactis' first large-scale pan-canadian project. Caroline recently began a new adventure as the Senior Clinical Research Manager of the Rossy Cancer Network (RCN). Caroline is passionate about clinical and translational research and shares her enthusiasm with McGill graduate students as a recurring lecturer.
