Camelot" John Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in 1953, he was 34 years old! As first lady, Jackie restored and preserved the White House, established a White House Fine Arts Committee, created the post of White House curator and restored all the public rooms in the house The Kennedy s brought a new, youthful spirit to the White House, which they believed should be a place to celebrate American history, culture, and achievement - Jackie planned important dinners and events at the White House and invited artists, writers, scientists, poets, and musicians to mingle with politicians, diplomats, and statesmen

Camelot" First time there were children in the White House! In a meeting with Khrushchev and Kennedy, they were supposed to shake hands Khrushchev said "I'd like to shake her hand first." Traveled to Paris with JFK, after the trip he said I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris, and I have enjoyed it. C67D441CE372&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US

Kennedy s New Frontier Kennedy s vision of progress - called for Americans to be pioneers and explore uncharted areas of science, space, address, discrimination, and poverty We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier - the frontier of the 1960's, the frontier of unknown opportunities and perils, the frontier of unfilled hopes and unfilled threats.... Beyond that frontier are uncharted areas of science and space, unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered problems of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus. start at 3:30 Peace Corps Since 1960s 200,000 + volunteer jobs in Latin America, Asia, Africa in over 139 countries helping with AIDS education, technology, environment, farming Alliance for Progress Giving economic assistance to Latin America to bring them up to speed Not as successful as the Peace Corps, dissolved in 1973

War on Poverty Poverty rate in the U.S. was 22.4% or 39.5 million people - in some counties in Appalachia, the poverty rate was more than 50% Unemployment benefits were expanded Increase in social security and the minimum wage Housing bills to economically distressed areas Food stamps for low-income Americans re-introduced Food distribution to poor increased Expanded school milk and lunch distribution

JFK s challenge to the space race July 28, 1958 Eisenhower est. NASA because of Sputnik In 1961 JFK made a speech to Congress First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard was first American in space, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962 Had some set backs/disasters in between but finally July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins

Kennedy assassination Visiting TX to speak - Friday, November 22, 1963, 12:30pm, in motorcade with Jackie and TX Governor, Kennedy was shot Pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital - body was loaded into casket and put on Air Force One to return to DC At 2:38 p.m. JFK s VP, Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office on board

Kennedy assassination Johnson then formed a commission Nov. 29, 1963, to investigate the assassination The Warren Commission created a 888-page report and concluded Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the Kennedy assassination Two days later while being transported Jack Ruby killed Oswald outside the court house - Warren Commission also said Ruby acted alone

Who really killed Kennedy?? 1 shooter? 2 shooters? Communist sponsored KGB attack? Conspiracy by CIA? American Mafia? Israeli government? FBI? Cuba?

Kennedy s funeral Jackie knew he wasn t just her husband, he was the President and the people needed to have a ceremony to say goodbye His casket was in the East Room of the White House for 24 hours, on Sunday his coffin was carried on a horse-drawn march to the U.S. Capitol - hundreds of thousands lined up to view the guarded casket Representatives from over 90 countries attended the state funeral on Monday, November 25 Kennedy is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with an eternal flame in front of the marker
