As a matter of fact, how many of us have our American Flags hanging proudly from our porches? Is Patriotism love of country? Many countries have purple mountain majesty and amber waves of grain. Is Patriotism about giving one s life for scenery? Patriotism, I believe is rooted in the ideas that gave birth to our country; the United States of America. That all men are created equal, with three unamiable rights; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Do we call this freedom? Do we call it Liberty? Call it what you want, but this is the foundation this nation was founded on. This has defined us as Americans. This makes life worth living and dying for. Our nation exemplifies the Freedom everyone on our planet desires. So enjoy this Memorial Day weekend in peace and think about the Freedom; understanding it, living it, teaching it, and supporting those who are educating others about its principles. Wave Old Glory and thank those who have fought for our freedom. Meet Foundation Board Member: Jennie Meehan A Board member since 2012 and President/CEO of JZ Meehan & Associates Consulting. Ms. Meehan is a financial consultant to banks, credit unions, and start-up companies. She has been in the world of personal finance for well over 25 years. Ms. Meehan is the former President/CEO of CA State Employees Credit Union of San Jose, a 1

2 full service financial institution, which she ran for 10 years. She was also President/CEO of Silicon Valley Economic Development Corporation, a microenterprise and training agency for San Jose businesses. Ms. Meehan is well known throughout Silicon Valley. She has been recognized as a Woman of Achievement in Northern CA and was president of The Woman s Fund of Silicon Valley. The World Council of Credit Unions has also recognized her for her support of multi-cultural communities long before it was vogue. Jennie attended Santa Clara University School of Business and Arizona State University. She is a past member of the Silicon Valley Capital Club and was a Notary Public for over 25 years. Chang Scholarship Luncheon The event honored scholarship recipients Ana Castro, Michael Morales, Abibat Oshiobugie, Cody Sampson, Raul Sanchez, Tran Tran, and Zainab Yusuf. In addition to the parents filling the room with adulations, among the crowd were Chang Scholarship Alumni dating back when the first scholarship was awarded in The impact of these funds have transformed each and every recipient in the room. Mr. Allan Liu, (curator of the funds) offered in his final On May 12, 2016 over 70 people gathered for the celebration of the 2016 Robert N. Chang 15 th Annual Scholarship Celebration. Room T415 on the fourth floor of the SJCC Technology Building experienced a wonderful afternoon of introductions and kind words from Doriann Tran, Takeo Kubo and SJCC President, Dr. Breland. 2

3 comments. A scholarship tradition and the building of a family of alumni was displayed by the outreach and consideration of current and past awardees. A true celebration of giving and giving back! The first will be Monday, March 7 th at 7:30 am. Future dates are June 6 th and October 3rd. We are gathering individuals from our community to educate them on our mission and why this Foundation operates. Through this process, the Foundation is looking for potential board members who have a passion for student success and for potential donors. Topics of conversation will include District programs and Foundation initiatives while having a free form of networking and interaction. These events are open to all district employees. What a great way to meet our committed board members, community members, and learn more about your Foundation while sipping fresh orange juice or a hot cup of java, relishing in a conversation about how to better our community through higher education. 5 Shana Carter / Advancement Coordinator Shana.carter@sjeccd.edu Meet Foundation Board Chair Donald Young Donald Young has been a board member of the Foundation since As the Current Board Chair, Mr. Young directs his volunteer time in supporting the District s diverse student population through his community connections. Originally from Texas, Mr. Young came to California to complete his B.S. degree from UC Santa Barbara. Mr. Young also has a Construction Management Certificate from CSU East Bay. Currently, the Senior Vice President for Salas O Brien Engineers, Inc., Mr. Young leads the Construction Department where he maintains and develops client relationships, as well as supports community alignment with internships and educational seminars. An avid world traveler, his global perspective and passion for higher education for our District and the students it services are his calling cards when speaking with our community leaders. SJECCD Foundation Participates 2 At the start of 2016, the SJECCD Foundation started to find ways to further its presence on your campuses. During the first week of this term, the Foundation participated in the Orientation Tables, attended Student Government Meetings and had a table at the wildly success EVC Community Partner Volunteer Fair. We are currently working to further enhance the PTK club with micro scholarships for students who cannot afford the membership into this prestigious academic national organization. By 7:40 Foundation board members Jennie Meehan, Wendy Ho and Autumn Young were greeting President Breland and Vice Presidents Montemayor, Graham, Gonzales and Aytch. SJCC Student volunteer (and future Alum) Lilian Ruiz was offering hot java to Alums Dan Orloff and Josie Gutierrez. Dean Palin, Kevin Jensen and Jose Salcido where sharing stories and fresh fruit. The morning was off to an engaging start. This first Foundation Leadership Group series of three for 2016 is open to all district faculty and staff. The premise to is re-introduce the Foundation to our campuses, garner ideas on how to work toward the common goal of program development, raising friends and funds and connecting to the community to further the Districts and the Foundations presence. The one hour flew by as business card exchanges and hands shaking were the culminating actively as everyone exited for an exciting day in higher education. Please reserve June 6 th on your calendars for the next Forum. March Donation Updates: The District Foundation is pleased to announce that a $30, pledge was given by Carmen and Al Castellano to support student leadership. A $10, contribution was made this month by the CISO group. 1

8 A $1, donation from Kathy Buob, an SJCC part-time instructional support assistant was received to honor her son who attended SJCC. Meet Foundation Board Vice Chair: Joe Vela Joe Vela has been advocating for our students as a District Foundation board member for the past three years. His experience in building bridges for our students comes not only from his desire for student success, but from his professional training. As an associate principle at Aedis Architects in San Jose, Mr. Vela has been a part of building and designing San Jose for many years. As a matter of fact, Joe recalls the cosmetology project at SJCC as one of his most enjoyable but challenging projects. It was an extremely challenging modernization project we were strategically able to fit seemingly incompatible programs (cosmetology and Reprographics) into an existing building with very limiting physical constraints, stated Vela. Joe received his Bachelors in Architecture from Cal Poly, coaches his son s baseball teams and is a confirmed house fixer-uper. Let s thank Joe for his added efforts in building student success within our District. Chang Scholarship reaches $1Million! 2 This year marks the fourteenth year the Robert N. Chang Scholarship has assisted our students in their continued scholarly road to college completion. This scholarship has funded $1million dollars as of

According to Doriann Tran, International Counselor at SJCC and coordinator of this fund, we are in the process of accepting applications for this transfer scholarship and we look forward to our annual Chang Scholarship ceremony. This year s ceremony will be held on May 13 th in T 415. Mr. Allan Liu, president of Strategic Insurance Services and family facilitator of this scholarship is excited to continue this financial commitment. Mr. Liu has presided over this fund since its inception. He is so proud of the students that have taken advantage of the financial opportunity the Chang Family has bestowed to our students. In furthering this recognition, the District Foundation is collecting Thank you cards, notes or s which will be given to Mr. Liu at the Scholarship Ceremony on May 13 th. Please forward your kinds words of thanks to a family that has touched 200 plus students to the Foundation Office.
