1 Childhood Obesity Task Force September 21 22, 2013 Renaissance Convention Center Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Speaker Biographies Mayor Mick Cornett Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Mayor Cornett has been at the forefront of the Oklahoma City renaissance. Under Mayor Cornett s leadership, the City has seen the final completion of MAPS 1, the implementation of MAPS for Kids, and the passage and implementation of MAPS 3. With Mayor Cornett leading the way, Oklahoma City became a major league city with the arrival of the National Basketball Association. During his tenure, Oklahoma City s economy has been one of the strongest in the nation. Standing for efficient government and responsible leadership, Mayor Cornett has worked to promote an inclusive and optimistic vision of Oklahoma City, fueled by bold ideas. Roberta Friedman, MS Director, Advocacy Resources for the Food Marketing Initiative Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, Yale University Roberta Friedman is the Director of Public Policy at Yale University s Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity. She collaborates with public health organizations across the country, and educates federal, state, and local policymakers about the latest research on sugary drinks, marketing of junk food to children, school and pre-school nutrition, weight bias, and other obesity-related issues. She has been working intensively on sugary drink policies for more than three years, with a focus on taxes to reduce consumption, and is managing a Voices for Healthy Kids American Heart Association grant, providing technical assistance, webinars, and written resources for advocates working to reduce sugary drink consumption among children. Ms. Friedman ran public health programs at the University of California, Berkeley, and was the Director of Education for the Massachusetts Public Health Association, where she helped write legislation, which eventually passed, to rid the public schools of junk food and beverages. She received her Master of Science at the Harvard School of Public Health.

2 Daniel Hatcher, MPH National Healthy Out-of-School Time Advisor Alliance for a Healthier Generation Daniel Hatcher is the National Healthy Out-of-School Time Advisor at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. At the Alliance, Mr. Hatcher led the working group that developed the Healthy Out-of- School Time Framework, inclusive of the National After School Association Standards for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA). Mr. Hatcher is responsible for developing, expanding, managing and delivering technical assistance services and resources for out-of-school time sites as they work to achieve the HEPA standards. Mr. Hatcher has authored several articles related to the achievement of the HEPA standards and is a regular facilitator at local, regional and national conferences. Mr. Hatcher joined the Alliance in 2008 from Youth Service America (YSA) where he served as Director of Outreach, coordinating national and international partnerships as well as managing the YSA National Youth Advisory Board and serving as Editor-In-Chief of the National Service Briefing. Mr. Hatcher has a BA in International Relations and a Masters of Public Health, both from Western University. Mr. Hatcher is enthusiastic about helping local community-based organizations bridge research and sustainable action, while cultivating quality youth-adult partnerships. Andrew Hysell, JD Project Director Campaign for Healthy Kids Andrew Hysell is the Project Director for the Campaign for Healthy Kids. As Project Director, Mr. Hysell oversees Campaign policy activities and determines overall strategy and direction for the Campaign. He also serves as the Associate Vice President for Policy and Advocacy for Save the Children s U.S. Programs. Mr. Hysell joined Save the Children in 2006 as the Director of Policy and Advocacy. He serves as the lead for policy change on issues impacting children in rural America. Under his leadership, the Policy and Advocacy team manages federal and state government affairs for Save the Children s U.S. Programs. Previously, at the Connecticut General Assembly, Mr. Hysell served as Legislative Counsel to the Connecticut Senate Democrats, focusing on state constitutional and administrative law. He honed his advocacy skills as Regional Advocacy Director for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, serving on the front lines of the tobacco fight at the state level, assisting several legislative wins, including the passage of the nation s strongest smoke-free air laws in Delaware, Connecticut, and New York. He worked for Congressman Tom Allen (ME-1) in his efforts to advance campaign finance reform during the 105 th Congress and Andrew also has experience working on numerous issue and candidate campaigns. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Carroll College. In 2003, he earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the Georgetown University School of Law. Andrew is a founding member of the Connecticut American Constitution Society and also an elected local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for his north Capitol Hill neighborhood.

3 Roger Millar Vice President Smart Growth America Roger Millar is a Vice President of Smart Growth America and Director of the Smart Growth America s Leadership Institute, which provides technical assistance programs for state and local government, and Director of the National Complete Streets Coalition. He has held leadership positions in the public and private sectors, most recently as Director of the Missoula, Montana Office of Planning and Grants. Projects in which Mr. Millar played a leadership role, particularly the development of Portland, Oregon s Pearl District and the Portland Streetcar, are seen as national models. He has also managed or participated in signature projects for rural, resort and gateway communities throughout the American West. Mr. Millar is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a Certified Floodplain Manager. He is a member of the ASCE Committee for America s Infrastructure, which produces the Report Card for America s Infrastructure. He is also Past President of the Oregon Section of ASCE and of the Montana Association of Planners. He graduated from the University of Virginia in Craig Moscetti, MPH Associate, Policy & Programs Leadership for Healthy Communities Craig Moscetti is the associate for policy and programs for Leadership for Healthy Communities, where he provides research and analysis on policy issues related to healthy eating, active living and childhood obesity prevention. Prior to joining Leadership for Healthy Communities, Mr. Moscetti worked for governmental and non-governmental organizations on public health and international development policy and advocacy. Mr. Moscetti has also consulted for several international organizations conducting research, policy analysis and partnership development. His recent work with one international organization focused on developing innovative public-private partnerships to address chronic diseases. Mr. Moscetti has expertise in research, policy analysis, advocacy, coalition development and policy communications. He has authored a variety of reports and publications on public health issues. He holds a Masters of Public Health degree from the George Washington University and a BS in biology from Villanova University. In his spare time, Mr. Moscetti is a competitive triathlete and runner.

4 Rocaille Roberts, MPH Director of the Office of Policy & Planning Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services Rocaille Roberts is the Director of the Office of Policy and Planning at Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES). She is responsible for facilitating and managing comprehensive community health improvement planning initiatives; providing oversight and/or coordination support for health assessment, strategic planning, outcomes evaluation and public health accreditation activities; and serves as the health department s liaison for legislative and regulatory developments for various public health issues. Ms. Roberts currently serves as Project Director for Healthy Living Matters, which is a Houston/Harris County planning initiative charged with the task of developing policy strategies aimed at system-level and environmental change to reduce childhood obesity in the area. With the support of community stakeholders from various health and non-health sectors, she has oversight over multiple assessments, community and stakeholder engagement, policy tracking and evaluation activities. Ms. Roberts currently serves on the Texas Medical Center s Government Affairs Advisory Council, the Houston/Harris County Community Transformation Leadership Team, the Texas Health-in-All-Policies Advisory Panel, and the National Association of Local Health Official s (NACCHO) Healthy Living and Prevention Workgroup. She is also a part of NACCHO s Quality Improvement Leaders team. Ms. Roberts received an MPH degree in health services management and policy from the Ohio State University in She is currently a PhD candidate studying health economics and health services research at the University of Texas, School of Public Health. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner Executive Director, Chief Executive Officer, & Co-Founder MomsRising.Org Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner is the co-founder and the Executive Director/CEO of MomsRising.org, a grassroots online and on-the-ground organization. Founded in May 2006, MomsRising has more than one million members working together to increase family economic security; to help ensure families, children, and businesses can thrive; and to end discrimination against women and mothers. MomsRising is educating the public, organizing, and speaking out to improve public policy and to change the national dialogue on issues that are critically important to family economic security in our nation. Ms. Rowe-Finkbeiner has been deeply involved in cutting edge politics and policy analysis for two decades and has received numerous awards and accolades for her work. She currently serves on the board of the Economic Opportunity Institute, and as a Parenting Magazine Mom Congress Advisory Board Member. She lives in Washington State with her husband and two children. John Weidman, MA Deputy Executive Director The Food Trust John Weidman is the Deputy Executive Director of The Food Trust, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit working to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food. He advocates for public policy change at the local, state and federal levels, and educates policy makers about the factors impacting the nutrition of lower-income people. Mr. Weidman provides oversight for the organization s national supermarket campaign and its regional farmers markets program, and led the effort to open Philadelphia s Headhouse Farmers Market. Mr. Weidman has 15 years of experience in public policy advocacy and nonprofit communications. He holds a Master s degree in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and serves on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center and the Pennsylvania Public Interest Research Group

5 Denise Woods-Bevly, DrPH, MA Project Director REACH Healthy-by-Default Initiative, UCLA Denise Woods-Bevly is currently the Project Director for the CDC-funded REACH Healthy-by- Default Initiative at UCLA. Dr. Woods-Bevly s primary research interests are in childhood and adolescent obesity prevention, physical activity assessment and promotion, diabetes education, and health promotion. She has worked on various projects to reduce obesity rates and increase participation in physical activity among underserved populations, as well as diabetes selfmanagement and prevention. In her current position as Project Director, Dr. Woods-Bevly continues to evaluate strategies that can help normalize systematic and environmental cues that support the integration of Instant Recess(r) and other organizational wellness approaches, which may lead to making physical activity and healthy food choices the default option in communities of color. She has also worked with professional athletes and sports teams to develop and strengthen public-private partnerships focused on expanding health promotion opportunities and awareness of chronic disease prevention. Dr. Woods-Bevly completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Mass Communications at the University of Southern California. She then went on to earn her doctoral degree in Public Health from the Department of Health Services at the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA.
