3 3 A New View of Philanthropic giving In 2007, many advancements in research and clinical care, new building construction and renovation, as well as educational opportunities for Cleveland Clinic patients and employees, were supported by philanthropy. An honor roll of supporters can be found on pages 10 through 33. Each year, this list grows longer, a testament to the valued relationship between philanthropy and medicine. In a time of diminishing federal support for research and patient programs and an increasing need for both, philanthropic support is critical in ensuring that medicine continues to progress. Projects and programs supported by philanthropy give hope and promise to patients and their families. Charts on pages 5 through 7 illustrate Cleveland Clinic s philanthropic health in 2007, which, thanks to you, was robust.

4 dear friends In the past six years, more money has been raised for Cleveland Clinic than in the first 80 years of its history. Last year was a banner year for Cleveland Clinic fundraising, with nearly 20,000 supporters contributing $176 million in new gifts and pledges toward Today s Innovations, Tomorrow s Healthcare: Campaign for Cleveland Clinic. This is another fundraising record for our organization, and we are grateful to each and every one of you for partnering with us as we continue working toward our $1.25 billion goal. In the past six years, more money has been raised for Cleveland Clinic than in the first 80 years of its history. Your personal commitment to improving care is the reason for this incredible accomplishment. You allow us to put patients first in every way while spurring progress in all four of our campaign cornerstone areas. Innovative Patient Care: Putting patients first is exemplified by many Cleveland Clinic initiatives begun in A major step was an organizational change from divisions to institutes. This move, integrating medical expertise and services from different disciplines under one roof, creates a more efficient, cohesive approach to medical care that enhances research and streamlines delivery of services. Among the new institutes is the Wellness Institute, headed by nationally known physician and author Michael Roizen, MD. This new institute is helping patients achieve healthier lifestyles and improve longevity. Also new is the Office of Patient Experience, headed by Chief Experience Officer M. Bridget Duffy, MD. This area is addressing the emotional experience of each patient. Basic and Clinical Research: The named chair program continued growing with 25 new chairs established in 2007 in areas including neurological, cardiovascular, colorectal and genetic research. Investigations made possible through the named chair program help move healthcare into a future of greater discovery and hope. Medical and Patient Education: Cleveland Clinic s Education Institute sponsored 790 residents and fellows and 130 advanced fellows in This is the highest graduate medical education enrollment in Cleveland Clinic history. The Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine has seen the number of applicants double in four years, with nearly 1,300 applicants for 32 positions in In addition, the Education Institute offered 324 Continuing Medical Education programs to 77,190 participants from around the world. Named chairs continue to play an important role in Cleveland Clinic s educational efforts, promoting collaboration and allowing chair holders to devote more time to their research. Many chairs also educate patients and the public about medical issues under investigation. Campus Master Plan: Cleveland Clinic is constructing a world-class, innovative medical campus to care for patients in the finest surroundings. In 2007, progress continued on flagship projects including the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Pavilion and the Glickman Tower. Also in 2007, Cleveland Clinic served more patients than ever before, with 3.2 million visits in the Cleveland area and at Cleveland Clinic in Florida. Our health system provided more than $421 million in benefits to residents, including $123.4 million in free or discounted clinical services to the Cleveland and Florida communities. We continue to expand internationally, and last year was no exception. Plans were announced for Cleveland Clinic to manage Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, a network of healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Although no philanthropic dollars will go toward our work in Abu Dhabi, we want you to be aware of global partnerships like this one that solidify our status as a world-renowned healthcare provider. Whether across the nation or across the world, all of these efforts are made possible through your philanthropic support and the time and expertise of our volunteers. More than 130 Campaign Executive Board members and 650 volunteers are dedicated to our campaign and advancing the course of medicine. As we move forward together, we are helping to ensure that today s innovations will, indeed, become tomorrow s healthcare. 5 2007 Philanthropy Philanthropic highlights In 2007, philanthropic giving by Cleveland Clinic friends increased, taking us closer to our $1.25 billion goal for Today s Innovations, Tomorrow s Healthcare: Campaign for Cleveland Clinic. Our five-year public philanthropic campaign, which began in 2006, supports four cornerstone areas: patient care, basic and clinical research, medical education and the campus master plan. Cornerstone Collaboration Philanthropy has a direct effect on improving patient care, research and medical education efforts. It also is changing Cleveland Clinic s campus, including construction of the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Pavilion and the Glickman Tower, which open in the fall of Campus Master Plan Construction of the stunning and innovative Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Pavilion and Glickman Tower will be completed by the fall of 2008, with building openings planned in September. Support of the campus master plan at $21 million surpassed the fundraising goal in 2007 and made these buildings a reality. Basic and Clinical Research In 2007, campaign contributions totaling more than $72 million furthered a variety of research initiatives, advancing patient care and offering hope for the health of future generations. Patient Care Patients come first at Cleveland Clinic. In 2007, more than $42 million of campaign funds directly benefited patient care. Medical Education Through gifts to medical education, Cleveland Clinic supporters are helping us produce tomorrow s innovators and contribute to a healthier, informed community. 7 2007 Philanthropy 7 Program Support Programs Supported by Philanthropy As of 2007, philanthropic gifts to Cleveland Clinic have supported 3,618 programs during the campaign affecting patient care, research, education, construction and renovation. Each year, the number of supporters grows, and with it, so do Cleveland Clinic s opportunities to shape the future of medicine. The number of Cleveland Clinic s endowed and term chairs increased from 50 in 2006 to 75 in 2007 and represented new pledges of more than $44 million to support technological innovations, medical research and education.
