2 Biography: Gov. Michael Dukakis Personal History Michael Stanley Dukakis was born on November 3, 1933, in Brookline, MA, the second son of Panos and Euterpe (Boukis) Dukakis. His father, a Greek who emigrated from Asia Minor to the US in 1912, entered Harvard Medical School in 1920, becoming an obstetrician. His mother, who arrived in the US from Greece in 1913 at the age of nine, attended Bates College. Michael's middle name, Stanley, vas given him to honor his mother's high school principal, Stanley Gray, who had encouraged her to go to college. His older brother died in 1973 in an accident; although Dukakis claims that it vas done by a hit-and-run drunk driver, no witnesses have been found or arrests made. In 1951 Michael Dukakis graduated from Brookline High School where he was President of the Student Council and a three-letter athlete (cross country, basketball, and tennis; he also ran 57th in the Boston Marathon that year); in 1955 he graduated from Swarthmore College (BA, Political Science, Phi Beta Kappa) where he served as campus chairman of Students for Democratic Action and as an organizer for ACLU; and, in 1960, from Harvard Law School (JD, with honors). He is still a member of the ACLU and serves on the board of the Massachusetts Americans for Democratic Action. In addition to Greek, Dukakis speaks fluent Spanish, having spent the summer of 1954 in Peru on a student fellowship. On June 20, 1963, Dukakis (who was Greek Orthodox) married Katharine ("Kitty") Dickson, daughter of Boston Pops' associate conductor Harry Ellis Dickson. A native of Brookline, she graduated from Brookline High School and attended Penn State from 1954 to She left school and married John Chaff etz on March 17, Their son, John, was born on June 9, After their divorce, Kitty returned to Massachusetts where she met Dukakis. She graduated from Lesley College (BS) and Boston University (MA) and has taught and studied modern dance for more than 25 years. A political activist who belongs to a disarmament organization called Peace Links, she also serves as Director of the Public Space Partnerships Project at Harvard University (developing public/private initiatives for the improvement of public spaces), helped found the Cambodian Crisis Fund to resettle Cambodian children in America, is on the Board of Directors of Refugees International and on the Board of Trustees of the Refugee Policy Group of Washington, DC. Kitty, who is Jewish, served on the President's Commission on the Holocaust and was actively involved in raising funds for the establishment of a National Holocaust Memorial in Washington, DC. They have three children: John (from her first marriage), Andrea (born November 10, 1965), and Kara (born November 4, 1968).

3 During Mike Dukakis spent 16 months in Korea with the US Army, attaining the rank of Specialist Third Class. In 1960 he joined the Boston law firm of Hill and Barlow where he worked in real property law, representing real estate developers (he became a partner in 1965); he again worked for Hill and Barlow after losing the lieutenant governor's race in 1970 and stayed until being elected governor in He also served as the moderator of "The Advocates" (a public affairs debate program) on public television from 1970 to Between his first and second terms as governor, Dukakis joined the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Ctovernment at Harvard University and served as Director of the school's Intergovernmental Studies program and chairman of the program for senior executives in state and local government. i Dukakis, who has stated that his negative reaction to Senator Joseph McCarthy had a major influence in interesting him in electoral politics, was elected as a member of the Brookline Town Meeting in 1959, while still a law student. He was elected chairman of the Brookline Democratic Town Committee in In 1962 he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives where he served for eight years. He is responsible for introducing legislation for no-fault automobile insurance (Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to adopt such a system). In 1967 his colleagues in the Legislature voted him the year's Outstanding Legislator. Dukakis was the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in 1970, but lost. He was elected governor in 1974, beating incumbent Republican Francis Sargent with of the vote. A key theme of Dukakis' campaign was his promise not to increase taxes: a promise that was broken in his first six months in office with an tax increase of close to $500 million which generated a storm of protest and led to his loss in the Democratic gubernatorial primary to Edward King in Upon leaving office, he remained politically active and was a leader in opposing Proposition 2-1/2, the 1980 tax cut initiative of which he said "... 'Massachusetts voters are too smart to fall for such a simplistic proposal.'" The measure, similar to California's Proposition 13, passed overwhelmingly and is considered to have been a major catalyst for the economic boom referred to as the "Massachusetts Miracle." In 1982 he ran against and beat Gov. King in the Democratic primary, then went on to win the governorship in the general election with 61.92% of the votes against Boston Councilman John Sears. In 1986 he was easily re-elected, soundly defeating the GOP replacement nominee, George Kariotis.

This entrepreneurial experience was the foundation for the Vice President's interest in the development of high technology industries. He has visited high tech facilities in America, applauding the risk-takers responsible for so much of the country's economic growth and new job opportunities. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966 from Texas' 7th District.
