According to IBIS World, industry revenue is expected to reach an impressive $11.1 billion in, while buyers have accelerated organic growth by making acquisitions. During conversations with buyers, Capstone has identified several major deal drivers including a desire to augment existing training offerings, acquire new modes of delivery such as mobile and other online solutions and gain access to new clients for cross selling and upselling opportunities. As a result, this industry has shown healthy M&A volume year-to-date, with 41 transactions being announced or completed thus far. Both strategic and financial buyers have maintained strong interest in this sector, accounting for 60.0% and 40.0% of deal volume, respectively, over each of the past two years. As predicted in our Q2 report, technology driven platforms became a main focus for the industry in. Year-to-date, 28 transactions 68.3% of total transaction volume have been announced or completed that involve targets with substantial e-learning offerings. For example, Microsoft announced its acquisition of LinkedIn, which will include Lynda.com, and cited that LinkedIn Learning will tightly integrate into Office, enabling users to have a more seamless experience and access to on-demand courses. As technology develops, coding bootcamps have also become increasingly popular, while most now provide training services directly to corporations as part of their core offerings. There has been substantial consolidation among bootcamps with General Assembly s acquisition of Bitmaker being the latest example. Select transactions are outlined below, followed by a more comprehensive list on the following table. OnCourse Learning acquires IPCed (September ) The Institute for Professional Care Education (IPCed), a provider of training for nonmedical home and assisted living caregivers, was recently acquired by OnCourse Learning. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. OnCourse Learning is a portfolio company of private equity group CIP Capital and has made a total of two acquisitions in. Patrick Sheahan, President and CEO of OnCourse Learning, commented, This acquisition allows us to build on our strong foundation in healthcare education by expanding our content catalog to meet the training needs of professionals across the provider landscape, in both acute and post-acute care settings. L Squared Capital and Avante acquire Learners Edge (September ) Learners Edge, a provider of online professional development, continuing education and master s degree programs for K-12 teachers, was recently acquired by private equity firm L Squared Capital Partners (L Squared) and co-investment firm Avante Mezzanine Partners (Avante). Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The two buyers acquired Learners Edge from Stone-Goff Partners, which made the first outside investment in the company in Learners Edge was founded in 2002 as a provider of distance-learning courses and has since emerged as a leading provider of online direct-to-teacher continuing education in the US. This is L Square s fifth investment in the Education sector, with other portfolio companies including Teaching Strategies, Edlio, einstruction and US Education. In respose to the exit, Hannah Craven, Co-Founder of Stone-Goff Partners, commented, The Learners Edge team led by CEO Joe Cotter developed a clear, mission-driven approach for the development and dissemination of continuing education for teachers. Our successful exit is a testament to the value created by the management team since our investment and demonstrates the company s strength in helping onthe-ground teachers improve classroom instruction and student learning. General Assembly acquires Bitmaker (August ) General Assembly, a leading provider of coding, data, design and marketing bootcamps, recently acquired the Canadian-based Bitmaker. Bitmaker offers full- and part-time courses in web development, user experience and digital marketing. The acquisition will be General Assembly s first expansion into Canada. Anna Lindow, General Assembly s General Manager of Campus Education and Operations, commented, Bitmaker s sustained growth over time versus the overall size of the Toronto and larger market made us confident that there s still a huge opportunity for this trajectory to continue.
