4 TIPLA CONFERENCE FACULTY A.J. Bahou is a patent trial attorney, mediator, and registered patent attorney who practices in the area of Blockchain, data privacy, security, healthcare, and intellectual property law, including litigation management of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. He has extensive experience in all aspects of patent infringement litigation, from precomplaint investigation through trial and appeal. Mr. Bahou has worked on cases involving varying technologies such as smart meter technology, LED displays, medical devices, computer hardware, software, Blockchain, virtual reality, and Internet security systems. He has represented clients in electronic discovery disputes, motion practice, claim construction ( Markman ) hearings, PTAB trials, federal court trials and several appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Bahou is Managing Member at Bahou Law, PLLC, a Board Member on LaunchTN and Middle Tennessee ISSA, and past President of the Tennessee Intellectual Property Law Association. He earned a B.S. in Engineering from Tennessee Tech, an M.S. with honors in Electrical and Computer Engineering (focusing in Networking and Data Security) from The Johns Hopkins University, a J.D. and LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from the University of New Hampshire. Jonathan M. Blanchard, Ph.D. is a shareholder with Pitts & Lake, P.C. Jonathan provides legal services in the area of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and product designs. Jonathan specializes in patent portfolio acquisition and management and engages in enforcement and invalidation actions to protect the current and future business opportunities of clients. He has developed patent portfolios that were licensed to settle multi-million dollar litigation between international corporations and to exclude competitors from markets. Jonathan received his Doctorate in Organometallic Chemistry and a second Master degree in Inorganic Chemistry from Washington University, St. Louis; his first Master degree in Organic Chemistry from Syracuse University; and his Bachelor s degree in Chemistry from Centre College. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2000, before entering private law practice in Chicago. Peter Brewer is a member of Thrive IP where he has a broad transactional IP practice. Peter holds a degree in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University, and a law degree cum laude from South Texas (Houston) College of Law. He is a former Briefing attorney to the Texas Supreme Court, and is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences on intellectual property matters. Peter is an avid tennis player and a Dallas Cowboys fan. Lakita Cavin, J.D., Ph.D. is part of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) team. She is responsible for managing and licensing university technology, as well as preparing and reviewing research-related contracts, such as material transfer, research and confidentiality agreements. She also provides legal support and advice to the UTRF licensing staff. As a registered patent attorney, Lakita provides strategic support for drafting and prosecuting patent applications on new disclosures from across the UT System. She has been with UTRF as a staff attorney and licensing associate since Prior to joining UTRF, Lakita was a post-doctoral research scientist and assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the Health Science Center, where her research focused in the area of liver cancer. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Auburn University and a J.D. from the University of Memphis. Kevin Christopher is a registered patent attorney, marathoner, mountaineer, poet, engaged community member, and blessed father and husband. He founded Christopher Intellectual Property in 2016, primarily to serve the needs of the many outstanding artists and innovators of the Upper Cumberland and Appalachian regions. Previously, Kevin led bioinformatics, bioscience, and biotech licensing activities at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, steered large scale partnerships in renewable energy and synthetic biology for UC Berkeley, and mentored SBIR-funded startups under the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, Kevin has served as a foundational team member or key advisor for startups with algal production, biomass conversion, microbiome editing, and hepatocellular carcinoma diagnostic technologies. Kevin studied Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis, received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco and his B.A. from Lipscomb University. Grant M. Ford is a registered patent attorney at Patterson Intellectual Property Law, P.C. and focuses his practice on patent application drafting and prosecution in the fields of computer systems, computer networking, software, circuit design, memory architecture, display devices and power circuits. Mr. Ford served as a patent specialist at KORUS Patent, LLC in Lisle, IL, where he was responsible for drafting, editing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications. He spent five years in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner focused on computer networking arts. Mr. Ford is a 2013 graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was awarded the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Patent Office Practice. He holds a Bachelor of Science in computer engineering from the University of Tennessee. Hemant Gupta is an attorney at Butler Snow and has extensive patent prosecution in diverse technology areas, including biotechnology, mechanical, electrical and chemical. He counsels companies and research institutions in connection with domestic and international technology acquisition, licensing, intellectual property protection and technology commercialization activities. In addition, Hemant represents companies in commercial transactions, including drafting and negotiating licensing agreements, software agreements and asset purchase agreements. Hemant received his J.D. from the University of Memphis and his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Tom Kulik is a Partner in Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. a full-service commercial law firm based in Texas representing businesses. A member of the firm s Intellectual Property and Cybersecurity Practice Groups out of its headquarters in Dallas, Texas, he is recognized by his peers as among the Best Lawyers practicing intellectual property in Dallas by D Magazine. His practice spans the drafting and negotiation of IP/IT transactions (including, but not limited to computer software development/licensing, cloud computing, emerging Internet technologies, and mobile application development), social media/branding, cybersecurity, data privacy and IP/ technology litigation. His practice also includes an extensive trademark preparation and prosecution practice, including both domestic and foreign trademark protection. He is also a weekly IP columnist for AboveTheLaw. com, where he writes on trending topics in IP law. Mr. Kulik received his J.D. from Pace University School of Law School and his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College. Anita Modak-Truran is a partner with in Nashville where she heads the firm s Entertainment and Media Industry Group. Her practice focuses on intellectual property litigation, where she represents film and television production companies and studios, record labels, digital entrepreneurs and artists in copyright, trademark and other IP disputes, as well as in the transactional components of the entertainment deal. Anita also serves as an adjunct professor at University of Mississippi Law School, where she teaches law students on the complexities of the film deal. A former movie critic for Mississippi Public Broadcasting and WAPT-News (an ABC-affiliate), Anita is president and chief executive officer of Questidore Entertainment. Jacob Neu is a patent attorney in Bradley Arant s Nashville office. He has wide experience in patent and trademark prosecution, technology transactions, and patent litigation. He received his BA in Mechanical Engineering at Rice University and JD at Vanderbilt University Law School. Todd Obijeski is a registered patent attorney in the Atlanta office of Merchant & Gould. He is experienced in drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications, corresponding with foreign associates and prosecuting foreign applications, assisting in foreign opposition proceedings, drafting patent landscape reports, and drafting freedom to operate and invalidity opinions. Todd also has experience in inter partes reexaminations. With fifteen years experience and 6 U.S. Patents during a career in industry with major polymer film and plastics/packaging companies and a Fortune 50 chemical company, Todd truly understands the pressures and time constraints on inventors in the corporate world. He can put himself in his clients shoes because he has been there, and he uses that insider s experience to produce top-quality legal work for his clients. Todd has an M.S. in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University. Seth Ogden, Ph.D. joined Patterson Intellectual Property Law in After earning a Biology degree at the University of Virginia, he earned his Ph.D. in Cancer Biology at Vanderbilt then his JD at American University Washington College of Law. Seth has experience in patent infringement litigation and patent prosecution in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, industrial chemicals, software and electronic devices. Seth has also provided non-infringement and invalidity opinions and strategic positioning reports in the areas of biotechnology (diagnostics and biologics), pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals and material science. Greg Parker is a member with Bass Berry + Sims PLC and counsels technology companies on the procurement and enforcement of intellectual property rights. He is a registered patent attorney and focuses on patent, trademark, trade secrets and copyright disputes, representing clients in a diverse range of technologies in intellectual property litigation across the country. He received his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School and his B.A. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Vanderbilt University. Andy Pitchford graduated magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky with an Electrical Engineering major and Mathematics minor. He went on to graduate from the University of Kentucky, College of Law. He practiced law in St. Louis before moving to the Nashville area and joining Waller Lansden. Andy s practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of U.S., foreign and international patent applications in the electrical, software and mechanical arts. In addition to handling patents, Andy also advises clients in the acquisition, licensing, and enforcement of trademarks and copyrights. He is formerly the Chairman of the Nashville Bar Association s Intellectual Property Committee. Thor Urness is a Partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP where has practiced business and intellectual property litigation and related consulting since In additional to litigating IP disputes, including obtaining two of Tennessee s largest jury verdicts in commercial disputes, he has served as a mediator for IP disputes and qualified as a Rule 31 General Civil Mediator by the Tennessee Supreme Court Commission on ADR. Thor is a Fellow of the American, Tennessee, and Nashville Bar Foundations and has a B.A. and J.D. from Indiana University. Linda Yang is an attorney with Baker Donelson and focuses her practice in intellectual property related transactions, such as trademark, copyright, and IP licensing issues. Ms. Yang has experience in handling IP matters dealing with Chinese manufacturers and distributors. Ms. Yang obtained her undergraduate law degree from China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, China, and her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School.
