1 Network COLLEGE OF BUSINESS A Newsletter for Alumni and Friends Fall 2000 Dear Friends, Greetings and welcome to news from the College of Business. The vitality of our programs has never been better! This newsletter is chock full of information about our many efforts so that you, a valued supporter and friend of the College, can share in the joy of our accomplishments. NORM SOLOMON, Ph.D. DEAN, COLLEGE OF BUSINESS This has been a terrific year for the College of Business and a great second year for me as Dean. I am indeed privileged to work with first-rate students, a terrific faculty and staff and with active and interested alumni and supporters. The efforts these individuals have put forth have made it possible for the College to make important strides in developing exciting new academic programs and in enhancing ties with external partners and with external stakeholders. Throughout this process we have remained true to our mission statement (on page two). Thus in order to provide our programs... in a technologically advanced, active learning environment our innovative Information Technology Initiative has been advancing at a rapid pace. Our dedicated faculty members, in addition to pursuing their many other duties and responsibilities, have spent much time this year honing their skills in computer aided instruction. This fall we will welcome our very first students into this wireless mobile computing project and within three years each of our students will be operating in a wireless mobile computing environment. The College has also supported this initiative by moving forward on important new hires in Management Information Systems and in Business Law. These hires have enabled us to develop new courses in e-commerce and in the law of information technology. You can learn more about the details of our exciting Information Technology Initiative in a separate article in this issue of Network. Important to our continued leadership in business education is our commitment to strengthening our links with external stakeholders and with external partners. Our external stakeholders include our alumni as well as the businesses and professions that employ our graduates. We have even gone beyond our continental boundaries to expand our partnerships. For example, we have built a strong link with a renowned French business school, IFI Rouen. A separate article in this newsletter focuses on benefits students have reaped from the IFI-Rouen experience. We can be sure that we are pursuing the right course of action when the interests of our stakeholders dovetail with those of the College. There is no better validation of this than the tremendous generosity shown by a number of our alumni and friends in the past year. In a separate section of this newsletter we CONTINUED ON PAGE 3... The Initiative got a big boost last fall when Allen and Kathy Lenzmeier pledged $500,000 to get the project started. Phase One began with the College leasing IBM Thinkpad notebooks for the faculty. Fifty smiling professors attended a get started workshop during finals week in December. Spring semester brought faculty workshops focusing on FrontPage, PowerPoint and Excel software programs. Much of the academic year was spent planning for Phase Two of the Initiative. Members of the Technology Enhancement Committee met bi-monthly with a Student Advisory Team. Discussions focused on how to best implement the Initiative with students and what hardware specifications they desired. Importantly, student opinions were also sought by the Committee regarding allocation of scholarship dollars to students. Using student and faculty input, the Technology Enhancement Committee developed a pilot program that begins this fall. The pilot program started with conversion of two traditional classrooms to two state-of-the-art educational environments. Out with the black boards and desk chairs! In with wireless access, LCD projectors, SmartBoards, new carpets and team workstations. Six courses are being offered with notebook sections for fall semester 2000: Accounting 200 (Financial Accounting), Management 200 (MIS), Marketing 316 (Consumer Behavior), Marketing 317 (Product and Pricing Strategy), Marketing 324 (Marketing Research), and Marketing 412 (Professional Selling). 2 2 BRUCE SMITH CHAIR, ACCOUNTING & BUSINESS LAW DEPARTMENT HARRY THIEWES, Ph.D. CHAIR, FINANCE DEPARTMENT MILES SMAYLING, Ph.D. CHAIR, MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT M. ANAAM HASHMI, Ph.D. CHAIR, MARKETING & INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Departmental Updates ACCOUNTING & BUSINESS LAW It s been an exciting year in our department. We re working on curriculum for the College of Business Information Technology Initiative, scheduled to begin fall semester Courses using a laptop computer will be voluntary for the academic year, and required beginning with the fall, academic year. Professor Robert Zelin and Norm Solomon, Dean of the College of Business, have been raising funds and making infrastructure changes necessary for the laptop environment. Laptop classrooms will use state-of-the-art wireless technology. As part of this initiative faculty are working on curriculum and upgrading their technology skills. Professor Mary Rolfes will be our leader, teaching the first laptop courses during fall semester Professor Penny Herickhoff will teach the first Business Law laptop sections in the spring of We have also had changes in the department s faculty. Professor Don Daggett retired and Professor Ken Fowler has returned to Public Accounting. The department will miss them both and wishes them the best in their new endeavors. We are pleased to announce that Dan Levin has been hired as a new tenure track faculty member for Business Law. He is warmly welcomed. FINANCE, INSURANCE & REAL ESTATE The Finance, Insurance and Real Estate Department is pleased to announce that Travis Gill was selected as recipient of the 2000 Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Finance. Travis also served as the of the Finance Club for the academic year. The Certified Financial Planner Certificate Program has experienced strong growth in the Twin Cities area. This program is offered through Minnesota State University, Mankato to financial planners who are preparing to sit for certification in financial planning. We are very grateful to Dr. Chan Lee for his contributions. In addition to this program, a minor in Financial Planning was approved and will be offered beginning in the fall of The Department will experience personnel changes during the coming academic year. Dr. Sanjay Ranchander has accepted a position at Marshall University in West Virginia. He will be deeply missed by the College. Also, Dr. Steve Wilcox will take a full year s sabbatical and Drs. Chan Lee and Richard Swanson will take half-year sabbaticals. Though the Department will operate at reduced strength, all three faculty members have interesting academic pursuits planned and we look forward to our faculty being at full strength in the fall of MANAGEMENT A number of important changes took place in the Management Department during the last academic year. Given current dynamics, it s no surprise that most of them were within the management information systems concentration. Dr. Sung Kim will join the MIS faculty this fall. Dr. Kim received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska and has been teaching at Kansas State University for the past few years. We are delighted to have such a highly qualified scholar become a member of our faculty. MIS majors will benefit from two additional positive changes this year. The first is that three new classes are available for MIS students. They are: E-Commerce, Wireless Networks and Project Management. These courses have received all required approvals thanks to the dedicated work of Rakesh Kawatra. Secondly, Bill Brown will stay with us as a tenure track faculty member despite vigorous attempts by other schools to lure him away. John Kaliski submitted his resignation and will no longer be a member of the MIS faculty. He has decided to pursue an entrepreneurial challenge and we wish him the best of luck. His wisdom, integrity and energy were driving forces in the formation of the MIS concentration, and his contributions to MSU will be felt for a long time to come. The management faculty extends sincere congratulations to Tim Scott for being named a distinguished faculty member, and to Marilyn Fox for her promotion to full professor. Both of these individuals richly deserve this recognition. MARKETING & INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS During the past year the Department of Marketing and International Business established a department Advisory Council. The group will meet once a year in the fall to provide input to the faculty on curriculum, program development and assessment issues. Any alumnus who would like to share his or her time and expertise on this Advisory Council is invited to contact Anaam Hashmi at or him at m.hashmi@mankato.msus.edu. In recent years Marketing and International Business has sought to provide learning opportunities for business people on the job. An outcome of this effort is the Export Administration Certificate Program that is currently offered in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. During the academic year about two dozen middle managers participated in the Certificate Program. The Department will sponsor its annual Marketing and International Business Careers Day in March, This event is an important way for students to understand what careers await them upon graduation. If any alumni would like to participate in next year s event, please contact Anaam Hashmi. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to educate undergraduate students to be successful and responsible business leaders dedicated to pursuing excellence. Our high quality business programs primarily focus on meeting the education needs of Minnesota students, with a secondary focus on meeting the needs of students from the region. We partner with business to provide our programs in a technologically advanced, active learning environment. Our faculty, students and external partners work together in an environment of mutual respect and continuous professional development. The college encourages diversity of thought, exploration of technology, intellectual discovery, and contributions to the improvement of our global society. We pursue excellence in teaching, and engage in high quality research and service to support our teaching. Although we value basic research, our intellectual contributions focus principally on applied research and instructional development which enhance the learning process and improve business practice. Our service facilitates management of the college and university, supports extracurricular activities, contributes to our business disciplines through the scholarly review and editorial process, and builds business partnerships to enrich student learning.

3 ... Dear Friends, continued MSU is one of only 4 list all of our generous donors. Many thanks to each of you! There are several donors, however, whose belief in what we are doing is so strong and their support so significant that they merit special attention and thanks in this column. The College was thrilled to receive a gift of $500,000 from alumnus Al Lenzmeier and his wife Kathy. This leadership gift has been key to the success of our Information Technology Initiative. Also, key to the initiative was Wells Fargo Bank s gift of $100,000. Harlee Olafson, president of Mankato area Wells Fargo, spearheaded efforts that led to this donation. Wells Fargo has been a longstanding supporter of our College and is a major employer of our graduates. Private gifts also make an important difference to our College Scholarship Fund and enhance our accessibility to deserving students. Thus alumnus Norb Harrington s generous personal gift of $100,00 to the University, $50,000 of which went to the College Scholarship Fund, is most appreciated! The College has also been well provided for in the University-wide Scholarship pool. Alumnus Lynn Nagorske and his wife Pamela deserve special thanks for their personal donation of $100,000 to the ial Scholars Fund. This donation has been designated for Business students. Lynn's employer, TCF Financial, as part of its corporate matching gift program donated an additional $100,000 to the same scholarship fund. TCF Financial has also been a longstanding supporter of our College and is a major employer of our graduates. A separate article in this edition of Network focuses on the students in the College who have been awarded ial Scholarships. This year also saw the implementation of the Richard and Mary L. Schmitz Endowment for Opportunities in Food Retailing (first announced in the September, 1999 edition of Network). This $131,500 endowment not only provided tuition scholarships for two of our students but it also supported a one-week preceptorship for three students in the retail food industry. The Schmitz s worked closely and tirelessly with several of our Marketing Department faculty to create this wonderful opportunity for our students. We are able to maintain the momentum needed to move forward in developing external resources in large part because of the guidance of interested and active Business Advisory Council members. We are tremendously proud of the fact that each of the supporters listed in the previous paragraph is either now a member of our Advisory Council or has been a member in the recent past. Under the continuing vigorous and visionary leadership of Chair Greg Lea the Council has also successfully undertaken a number of new activities. For example, the Advisory Council initiated an awards program for the following categories of individuals: Distinguished Businessperson, Distinguished Faculty Member and Student Leader. These awards will be conferred at our October 5th Annual Advisory Council Meeting, and a feature article in this newsletter lists the awardees and describes their accomplishments. The Council also developed and ran its first-ever Student Appreciation Day on April 25th. This very successful event involved more than a dozen Advisory Council members visiting individual classes so that the members could share their knowledge and experience directly with students and faculty. On that same day the Advisory Council conducted a wrap-up of the MSU E-mentoring Program. A separate article discussing the phenomenal success of this effort is included in this newsletter. Working with the Council is a joyous experience for me an I am very grateful for the support its members have given to me and to the College. From this brief overview I hope you can see why I am very proud of everything that the College is doing. I welcome your ideas and energy as we move forward in creating the future of collegiate business education herre at Minnesota State University, Mankato. NORM SOLOMON Dean, College of Business Norman.Solomon@mankato.msus.edu Technology Initiative, continued from page 1 Spring additions will include Accounting 210 (Managerial Accounting) and Business Law 200. All students who are leasing a notebook from the University for fall semester will receive a $100 Lenzmieier scholarship to help defray the costs of the lease. Scholarships for subsequent semesters will be awarded by application. Courses will continue to be added to the list of those using the notebook computers until the Fall of 2003, when all College of Business courses will have a notebook application. Until that time, students will have the option of enrolling in either a notebook or non-notebook section of a course. The College of Business is proud of the progress it has made with this Initiative. Only a dream five years ago, the effort to bring new technologies to students is becoming reality. Our graduates will now better acquire the technological skills needed for a smooth transition from education to career. At the Races Thanks to College of Business alumnus Randy Sampson 80, friends and alumni of MSU s College of Business had the opportunity to have some fun and take a chance at the races last August. Sampson, and General Manager of Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, worked with the College to develop and publicize the event. This year s 2nd Annual Evening at the Races will be held on Friday, August 18. An alumni reception will begin at 5, with races following at 6:30. Races with MSU-related names will run throughout the evening, adding some fun for race-goers. Rigorous AACSB Standards Upheld In May, 2000, Milton R. Blood, Managing Director of Accreditation, International Association for Management Education, wrote the following to College of Business Dean Norm Solomon: I congratulate you for the role you play as an important contributor to higher education...you lead a management education unit that has met the rigorous review standards of AACSB accreditation...(this) signals your commitment to continuous improvement of the quality of the programs you provide...this letter is a reminder of the warranted pride you have achieved in your programs. MSU is one of only four Minnesota collegiate schools of business accredited by AACSB; twenty-five percent of business schools nationwide are so recognized. 4 Advisory Council MSU E-Mentoring Program Facilitates Valuable Exchange PARTICIPANTS IN THE E-MENTORING PROGRAM MEET FACE TO FACE STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY, APRIL 25, Advisory Council members give generously of their time to help the College of Business maintain programs relevant to current developments The College of Business Advisory Council is a great group of people. They not only excel at what they do on the job, but they care actively about the kinds of contributions our students will make when they leave the campus environment for the business world. This, they believe, is accomplished not only in the classroom, but through the personal contact students have with those who have grown and learned on the job. At the October 1999 Advisory Council meeting, the group expressed an interest in more diverse personal involvement with students. In response to this, the College of Business Advisory Council partnered with the Office of Alumni Relations to participate in the MSU E- Mentoring Program in spring semester This E-Mentoring Program is one way that the Advisory Council members can personally interact directly with a student in a meaningful way by developing a structured mentoring relationship at a time when the students are making important decisions in their academic careers. MSU STUDENTS EXCHANGE IDEAS WITH SUE KLASEUS, MINNEAPOLIS, AND DAVE ANDREAS, NATIONAL CITY BANCORPORATION. in business. GREG LEA, ADVISORY COUNCIL PRESIDENT, SPENDS TIME IN THE CLASSROOM ON STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY, APRIL 25, E-mentoring is what it sounds like a relationship between an experienced businessperson and a student. But unlike traditional mentor relationships, this exchange doesn t happen in person. Questions and answers are exchanged via . Many students and Council members chose to participate in the spring E- Mentoring program, which proved to be helpful for students and satisfying for mentors. One student wrote, I want you to know that the E-Mentoring Program has been outstanding... (My mentor) is an extraordinary individual and has given me incredible in-sight about many different topics... not only do I consider (my mentor) to be a successful professional, but also I consider him as a friend that I can turn to for honest, knowledgeable advice. Mentors had positive experiences and warm compliments for the students they came to know through the program. One mentor shared his impressions this way, Had lunch with (student) today. I think he should be the mentor and I should be the student. He is very focused. Went over his resume and it looks good. His father is a very successful businessman and has given him very good advice. If (student) is a typical student, you guys are doing a great job! Advisory Council Student Appreciation Day The Advisory Council contributes to learning and the development of opportunities in the College of Business in a multitude of ways. Their involvement has a positive influence on academic planning, development, technical advancements, recruitment and student activities. But most often what they truly enjoy is contact with students. Many Advisory Council Members are active in the E-Mentoring Program. Others become part of the Executive Lecturer Series sponsored by the College, or they facilitate internships. Looking for more ways to get to know students and share the business acumen they ve developed, the Advisory Council conducted its first Student Appreciation Day in April, It was a huge success, much appreciated by students who had the opportunity to exchange ideas and questions with Council members in the classroom, at student club meetings and during a celebration that brought students and their mentors together as a finale for the E-Mentoring Program. Thanks, Advisory Council members! The program formally took place during ten weeks in the spring with weekly, suggested topics provided by the College. Face-to-face meetings occurred at the beginning and conclusion of the program. Participants said the flexible format of the program contributed to its success. In response to suggestions made by both e-mentors and students, the program has been expanded from ten weeks to the academic year (October to April) for

BARRY MADEL 85 DISTINGUISHED HUMANITARIAN Barry Madel works as Vice and General Manager for a $75 million business unit of MACtac, a Bemis Company, located in Ohio. He s stayed in touch with MSU professors through the years. He has always had a strong desire to help others. While still at MSU, in 1985, Madel founded the Holiday Sharing Tree. It was the beginning of a wonderful annual tradition that has touched the lives of thousands. That first year, the Holiday Sharing Tree provided 182 families with gifts they would otherwise not have received. Now the program reaches 3,000 individuals annually. Madel was instrumental in securing the help of local service clubs that has kept the program alive. DR. ASRAT TESSEMA 79 DISTINGUISHED HUMANITARIAN As a Fulbright Scholar and graduate of five universities on three continents, Asrat Tessema has learned a thing or two about the world. In 1993, Tessema helped create the Ethiopian American Foundation, which is dedicated to forging academic collaborations between the two countries in areas such as research, teaching and training. In 1997, Tessema returned to Ethiopia as a Fulbright Scholar, where he focused his efforts on introducing the concept of a stock market to businesses in the country. While recognizing the challenges of selling the concept within the ancient culture, he worked tirelessly to educate business people about its potential benefits. 12 ial Scholars in the College of Business KATHERINE FISCHER MSU GRADUATE, CLASS OF 2000 ON THE JOB AS A STATE OF MINNESOTA LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA HEATHER WILLIAMS MSU GRADUATE, CLASS OF 2000 KPMG, L.L.P., MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA There s eagerness in the voices of ial Scholars. Questions about their interests, academic or otherwise, light a spark. It s understood that goals will be pursued and attained. Confidence underscores future plans. ial Scholars are academic standouts, yes, but also display a diverse array of interests and outlooks on life. After application, interviews and selection, they become part of every University department; are active in social activities, arts, clubs, sports and politics; and in every case, give back to the University what they can through volunteer service. Without exception, they value the relationship they are able to establish with MSU Richard Rush, and cherish memories of social events in his home and inclusion in his vision. The College of Business is proud to say that a large percentage of the University s sixty-two ial Scholars are enrolled in its academic programs. Four of this year s graduates from the group are featured here. HEATHER WILLIAMS Norfolk, Nebraska native Heather Williams came to MSU a very focused, goaldirected student. She values her ability to prioritize and complete projects successfully, but sees movement toward a life more focused on people as a positive change while a student at the University. It s an exciting time of taking ownership of everything in your life, she says of her undergraduate years. It s an adventure to find out where you want to go and what you want to do. I started with accounting and though I tried other things, stayed with it as my major. Looking back I see that I got better at studying efficiently rather than all the time, and my focus shifted from working for grades to an enthusiasm for what I was actually learning. I appreciated the warmth and help of the faculty. Now an accountant with the CPA firm KPMG, LLP of Minneapolis, Williams is doing work she loves. The fit is due in part to her internship; work with the same firm in 1999 gave her the opportunity to see what she d be doing first-hand. She says her growth while at MSU and her academic interests meshed perfectly to suit her current role. As an accountant with KPMG I have the opportunity to work with a lot of people. I interview clients, talk to controllers and participate in audits, which means personal skills heavily influence success. There s diversity here, and I feel confident with what I m doing. As a student Heather was a member of MSU s Concert Choir, played in a jazz ensemble, conducted campus tours and served as president of MSU s InterVarsity campus fellowship. As a ial Scholar she was encouraged by the genuine care she felt from Rush and other University staff members, and particularly appreciated the opportunity to meet the donor who made her scholarship possible. I have loved MSU and Minnesota, she says. Now I m excited to give something back. KATHERINE FISCHER Kathy Fischer, Legislative Auditor for the State of Minnesota, was not a typical ial Scholar. In addition to juggling individual classwork and group study projects she helped her two children, Kristian and Jerod, capture a bit of the world for themselves. She pushed to fulfill her dream of a college education with the help of her husband, who she says gave her the encouragement she needed to get things underway. While attending MSU she also held a job at a Northfield, Minnesota jewelry store. Fischer says her passion for numbers and sheer determination kept her going, I wanted this so badly. I was constantly doing homework while I was eating, at ball games, cooking, and waiting for appointments. I loved my classes, I benefitted from the availability and helpfulness of professors, and I enjoyed the other students. Fischer s drive from Northfield to Mankato was at times a challenge, but she appreciated the gentle beauty of the campus and river valley. My college education would have taken longer without the ial Scholarship, she says. It also made me feel great about myself. I wasn t asked to give much in return, but I found myself wanting to give back all I could. Fischer, who graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Accounting and a Minor in Business Administration in May, took her job in the Legislative Auditor s Office after a successful internship. Her current goal is to pass the CPA exam in November. JEREMY HORNER Jeremy Horner has been a ial Scholar twice; once at Iowa Lakes Community College and again as a junior and senior at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He s a lifetime racquetball player, the Minnesota State Champion in A-Division while at MSU, in fact, and it s clear that the enthusiasm, energy and skill necessary for athletic success are not limited to this sport. A May 2000 graduate, Horner is now employed by IBM, Inc. in Rochester as a Professional Financial Analyst. He says the job and the company are exactly what he wants. I came to IBM after developing a friendship with alumnus Mike Bilmeyer through MSU s E-Mentoring Program, he explained. Dr. Thiewes was instrumental in this connection, which eventually led to an internship and my employment. I loved what I was doing in the internship and Mike continued to be my mentor. He walked me to my interview on the day I was hired. While Jeremy is clearly a dedicated student, he gives credit to his fiancee, Shana Blum, for helping him stay focused on academic success while at MSU. Like other ial Scholars, it was necessary for him to maintain a specified grade point average to retain the scholarship. The ial Scholarship made a big difference for me, says Horner. Because I didn t have to work, I had more time to study. I also enjoyed getting to know Dr. Rush, and it was an honor to be selected as speaker for the Annual ial Scholars Dinner in May. Horner plans to contribute all he can at IBM, and would like to advance to a leadership role. CHAD KLOSTERMANN A fascination with the dynamics of business, operations, and strategy for success and added value drive Chad Klostermann when it comes to academics. I love strategic finance, he smiles. There is so much to learn. MSU exceeded my expectations academically; coming here was one of the biggest and best decisions I ve made. A May 2000 graduate, Klostermann credits mentors in the College of Business for encouraging him to prepare well for job fairs. He also benefitted from the relationship he established with an experienced businessperson through the MSU E-Mentoring program. Now employed at 3M as an Accountant in the Controllers Division, he sees the position as the perfect place to start. I plan to pursue a Master s degree in a few years, he says. 3M attracted me because it offers multiple opportunities to learn and contribute. My ultimate goal is to be CFO of a large company.... Scholars, continued on next page 12

13 ... Scholars, continued from previous page As a ial Scholar, Chad enjoyed opportunities to meet people and establish friendships with faculty and other students. He also gave campus tours, participated in an occasional photo shoot and helped with the annual phonathon. This scholarship was a huge factor in getting my four-year degree, he emphasized. Financially, it s incredible. And it s also inspiring. I found Rush to be an incredible, down-to-earth person and I enjoyed knowing him. 15 Student Activities THE ACCOUNTING CLUB The student members of the Accounting Club were very active again this year. They provided tutoring assistance to any student taking Principles of Accounting and participated in VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). Students who participated in VITA were required to pass an IRS exam to qualify for participation in the assistance program. Students held numerous fund-raisers to support their activities. Earnings from an evening of service as wait staff at Pizza Hut were donated to the club. Students also worked for a Saturday afternoon in a Metrodome concession stand. For the 35th year the Accounting Club hosted a Spring Banquet and Bowling Tournament at the Holiday Inn and the Victory Bowl in Mankato. The event was much enjoyed by both current students and alumni. Students and professional staff from Wolf Etter & Company volunteered for a fall clean-up activity. Together they raked lawns, washed windows and performed other tasks for elderly people not physically capable of performing the tasks. On the educational side, the club organized and sponsored a trip to the Accounting and Auditing Student Conference in Minneapolis. The conference presented opportunities for interaction between students and company representatives in the accounting and finance fields. THE INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS STUDENT ORGANIZATION Members of MSU s International Business Student Organization (IBO) attended a gathering sponsored by the International Business Organization in Saint Paul in November of Representatives of three regional international companies were featured presenters, including: Noor Dojia, Director of the Minnesota World Trade Center, Ross Dahlin, Manager of the International Division of Andersen Windows, and Sandra Renner, /CEO of Global Resource Associates. MSU s student group also organized a field trip to the World Trade Center the same day. In May, the group returned to Saint Paul for activities associated with World Trade Week. Thirteen MSU students attended the World Trade Conference, participated in an e-commerce session and lunched with Governor Jesse Ventura. Also during May, the first International Business alumni reunion was held at Applewood restaurant. This successful event was organized by the IBO. The program included a roundtable discussion and dinner. MARKETING CLUB The College of Business has an active group associated with the American Marketing Association. The group was host to several speakers and actively participates in service projects. Students strap on bright orange vests and arm themselves with yellow trash bags to clean a two-mile stretch of Highway 169 South each semester. They also collected food donations for Mankato s Echo Food Shelf during November. COUNCIL OF STUDENT BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS In January, 2000, the Council of Student Business Organizations (COSBO) was awarded use of an office in MSU s new Student Center addition for the academic year. The suite of rooms surrounds a lobby and common work area designed for student organizations. The room can be used for club activities and club promotion. New Experiences in Food Retailing for MSU Students Hands-on, real world experience is essential when seeking to understand opportunities available in any field, but especially in food retailing. MSU alum Richard Schmitz and his wife, Mary, have operated successful retail food outlets for many years. Now they have chosen to help MSU students gain first-hand experience in their business by establishing an endowment for opportunities in food retailing. College of business students may now apply for oneweek preceptorships in food retailing made possible by the Richard R. and Mary L. Schmitz Endowment Fund. The program gives students the opportunity to shadow managers in a retail setting. Students benefit from both observation and interaction with wholesale and distribution contacts. Students completing the Preceptorship Program are also eligible to be considered for the tuition scholarship provided by the Schmitz s as part of the Endowment. The Schmitz family has taken a personal interest in this program, working with Dr. Ken Anglin and Dr. Kevin Elliot to make it an effective experience for students. Preceptorship participants for the academic year were Jody Rankin, Tiffany Rickert and Angela Ryan. Rankin and Rickert also received tuition scholarships. Diversity Initiatives On November 8, 1999 the College of Business welcomed an enthusiastic group of students and faculty to a Cultural Diversity Reception. Students of color from within the College of Business and throughout the University were invited to a reception. Information about the College was provided, as well as information related to admission criteria and scholarship opportunities. Business students representing various clubs described the benefits of club membership. Good food and fun was had by all! Funding has been received to carry out two exciting diversity initiatives during the academic year. A second, expanded Cultural Diversity reception will be held during the fall semester. Invitations will be extended to international students and students of color who have not yet declared a major area of study. The activity is planned by the College s Enrollment Management/Enhancement Committee, a group that has placed a high priority on activities that give a personal touch to recruiting. The purpose of the event is to share relevant information, foster relationships on campus and provide the opportunity for one-on-one response to student questions. Secondly, stronger relationships with the minority community are sought through a series of visits to targeted high schools in southern Minnesota and the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area and selected community colleges. The College s goal is to create greater visibility for the University, to provide information about business careers and the College itself, to enhance faculty sensitivity to students of color, increase enrollment, and identify the characteristics of a support system that encourages success when students enroll. 16 Developing a Student Highlight After a semester of study in Rouen, France, Josh Hackbarth, MSU 00, finds himself looking for the international section of the newspaper first. He s come to believe that a second language is a good thing, and wishes he d known French before he ventured to Europe. I look at things differently now, he says. I approach things from a new, broader perspective. When I arrived in France, for example, I was shocked to find that the Institut de Formation Internationale (IFI) didn t require daily or weekly homework. After a while I started to see that the focus on case studies and discussion-based learning had a lot to offer. It wasn t necessary to follow a textbook. Hackbarth and four other students, two from MInnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) and two from IFI in Rouen, were the first to experience the benefits of an exchange program established between the two institutions in IFI, part of the ESC-Rouen group, and MSU have made it possible for enrolled students to study for credit abroad while paying tuition to their home institution. IFI is a four-year Gran Ecole, an institution that has earned the highest level of accreditation attainable for a French collegiate school of business. The institution has 400 students who are fluently bilingual in English and French. Students of the Institut de Formation Internationale study additional languages as part of their program, and are required to spend their second year of study abroad. Additionally, each student completes a six-month internship outside of France. MSU students studying in Rouen typically enroll in five classes: International Marketing, European Business Studies, Business Strategy, French Language and French Culture. MSU students have the option of living in a dormitory or with a French family. They are offered opportunities through IFI to tour some historic sites in the Normandy region. Rouen is approximately 1.5 hours from Paris by land. Christine Jirele, MSU 00, never imagined herself an exchange student. But work at the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee, Minnesota last year started her thinking, and the experience of a cousin who studied in London piqued her interest. She found the people in the International Programs Office at MSU helpful and decided to spend her last semester in Rouen. It was difficult to relate to other exchange students when we were all going through culture shock, she says. The studies were different, but my most important lessons were learned in that personal context. Jirele says travel, presentations and speakers enriched her study. Jimena Catarivas, an MSU student from Uruguay who spent the academic year as a high school exchange student in Worthington, Minnesota, had traveled extensively before enrolling in the Rouen program. Catarivas took advantage of the central European location to explore Spain, Italy, Portugal, England, Switzerland and Germany when she wasn t studying.
