The Cultural Heritage Commission voted unanimously in favor of recommending South Genesee Avenue for HCM designation, and this application continues to have the full support of Council District 10, which initiated the nomination. Duplexes such as this one from the early 30s are an essential ingredient to the Wilshire Vista neighborhood. The buildings from the early 30s demonstrate the beginning of new elements into the Spanish Colonial Revival style, before Art Deco began to have a heavier impact. It is important to preserve this part of Los Angeles. It s another element that makes the city special. Please don t allow it to be replaced by a large, generic box of apartments. Dale S. The Charles H. Bevis Duplex is a 1930 s multi-family residence recognized by SurveyLA as an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival style. The Cultural Heritage Commission voted unanimously in favor of recommending South Genesee Avenue for HCM designation, and this application continues to have the full support of Council District 10, which initiated the nomination. Since 1995, I ve been living at 1071 S. Orange Grove Ave., renting a one-bedroom apartment in a two-story building similar to many others on this block. As a professor of English at the University of Redlands, despite the long drive to work on the 10 Freeway, I choose to live here for the vibrant community that Los Angeles provides. Built in the 1930 s, my one-bedroom apartment has the built-in cabinets, wooden floors, tall windows, crown mouldings, and original tile-work that I find so appealing. Likewise, the home at Genesee is a real beauty, similar to the other duplex homes in the area and yet original in its elaboration of the basic structure. It is worth saving, just as this friendly, ethnically diverse neighborhood is well worth saving. Please don t let developers come in and trash what we have apartment buildings in the 1000 block of Orange Grove and along Whitworth and Packard, duplex homes in the 1000 block of nearby north-south streets, and single-family bungalows in the 2000 block of nearby streets. We have a gentle neighborhood, no more than two stories high. The apartment and condominium buildings that developers erect (for example, the monstrosity of 66 units going up on Orange Grove close to Pico Blvd.) have room for more people, it s true. But they have no grace, no warmth, and no affinity with the homes we have here. Please preserve the beauty of this neighborhood. Yours sincerely, Daniel Kiefer 1071 S. I am the homeowner of S. Genesee Ave, resident at 1071, and a voter in CD 10. The Charles H. Bevis duplex is a gem. It sits across and two buildings southeast of mine is the quintessence of Los Angeles architecture. The grand arches of its windows and porte cochere are mirrored throughout the building. A circular turret that houses the breakfast rooms, subtle and surprising details along the sweeping staircase and roofline all make it one of my favorite buildings in Wilshire Vista. The architecture on our block is a source of joy and pride for me and my neighbors. The Charles H. Bevis duplex is a key ingredient to that joy. I pause to admire its unique beauty every day. I, and many many others, do not want to see this occur on S. Genesee Avenue.
