1 MEMORIAL RESOLUTION SEPTEMBER 9, AUGUST 21,2004 NASHVILLE BAR ASSOCIATION MEMORIAL SERVICE NOVEMBER 18,2004 BE IT REMEl\ERED THAT: Jon E. Hastings was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee. His parents, Walter and Vivian Hastings lived in Newbern, Tennessee until Jon was twelve years old, at which time they moved to Dyersburg. At a young age, Jon demonstrated a war and generous spirit that touched many. As a boy, Jon was responsible, outgoing, and friendly -- the type of son who makes parents proud -- a delightful boy whom teachers and parents liked and trusted. Raised in the Church of Chrst, Jon developed a strong moral compass at an early age. He was an Eagle Scout and president of his high school class. He had a natural affinity for people, and he gathered and kept many genuine friends during all stages of his life. In addition to being an excellent student and leader, Jon was an exceptional athlete. After high school, he was given the opportnity to play college baseball at Florida College and other schools. Being forward thinking and mature, Jon decided to forgo college athletics in order to focus on academics and enjoy a more complete college experience. After attending Florida College for two years, Jon transferred to the University of Tennessee where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. He developed a strong interest in Democratic Pary politics, and he worked for Congressman Ed Jones in Washington, D.C. Upon applying to law school, Jon was accepted by Georgetown, the University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee. Because of his desire to develop a strong network
2 of Tennessee friendships, Jon decided to attend the University of Tennessee School of Law from which he received his J.D. degree in After graduating law school, Jon practiced law with the Dyersburg law firm of Farer, Moore & Jones before moving to Nashvile to further his legal career. As a lawyer and civic leader, Jon's success was phenomenal. He practiced with the law firm of Dearborn & Ewing, and he later became a member of the law firm of Boult, Cummngs, Conners & Berry, PLC, where he served on the firm's Board of Governors. He was recognized in the national publication, The Best Lawyers in America (R) He received the "Good Guy Award" from the Women's Political Caucus and "Volunteer of the Year" from the Nashvile Area Chamber of Commerce. He was recognzed for leadership as one of Nashvile's "Top 40 Under 40" by Business Nashvile magazine and received the Distinguished Service Award from the state Democratic Pary. Jon served as Legal Counsel to the Tennessee Democratic Pary. He also served as the state treasurer for U.S. Representative Bob Clement's bid for the United States Senate. Jon served on the boards of The Friends of the Public Library, the Nashvile City Club, the University of Tennessee National Alumn Association, the Nashvile Downtown Parnership, the Nashvile Area Chamber of Commerce, the Frank G. Clement Foundation, Visions with hiinite Possibilities, and the Marcus Robertson Children's Foundation. He also served as Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Real EstateÆnvironmental Liabilty News. He was a member of the Tennessee Association of Business, Nashvile Rotar Club, the David Lipscomb University Business Advisory Council, and of Leadership Brentwood. He was a co-chairman of the Men's Event, benefiting the Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. He was active in the American Bar Association (ABA), the Tennessee Bar Association, and the Nashvile Bar Association. He also - 2-
3 served on the Board of Directors of Prime Trust Bank. He was a member of the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ. A man of incredible self discipline, Jon Hastings was an accomplished marathon runner, having completed the Music City Marathon, the San Diego Marathon and others. More important than his professional and athletic successes, however, were Jon's '. successes as a person, father and friend.. While in law school, Jon fell in love with Emily Haron of Columbia, Tennessee. Jon mared Emily on January 21, They had two beautiful daughters, Camden and Tinsley, who were truly the apples of Jon's eye. Jon was as proud a father as anyone could imagine. His profound love for Emily, Camden and Tinsley were evident to all who knew him. Jon's character can best be described as warth, humility and dedication. In spite of Jon's extraordinar accomplishments, he never talked about himself. Jon always seemed to turn. conversations away from himself, preferrng to dwell on the accomplishments of others rather than his own. When he conversed with someone, Jon had an uncanny ability to be direct, genuine and funny, making the person with whom he spoke feel like he or she was the only person in the room. For Jon Hastings, life was not about Jon Hastings -- it was about others, his friends, family and the hundreds of lives that he touched. Jon rarely, if ever, spoke in negative terms, preferrng instead to rely upon a wonderflly upliftng sense of humor and a remarkable ability to tell wonderful stories. On Saturday, August 21, 2004, Jon Hastings died at age 45 after a protracted battle with cancer. Because of the radiating goodness of Jon's spirit, his loss was paricularly difficult for famly and friends. Jon's goodness made the world a happier place while he was here, and he - 3 -
4 left our world better than he found it. Jon Hastings wil always be deeply loved and fondly remembered. THEREFORE we, the Memorial Commttee for Jon E. Hastings, believing it is fitting and proper to honor his memory, move that this Memorial Resolution of Jon E. Hastings be adopted by the Honorable Chancellors of the Chancery Courts, Twentieth Judicial Distrct, State of Tennessee, and then be entered as a permanent record on the Minutes of the Memorial Book of the Chancery Court in the office of the Clerk and Master for Davidson County. Respectfully submitted, - 4-
