1 the Grapevine!! P.O. Box 493 Napa, Ca Exclusively for Rotarians and their families OFFICERS Tom Webber, Pres Bill Bennett, VP Tony Giaccio, Sec Carl Mianecke, Treas George Shanks,IPP Board Members Chris Burns John Duser Tracy Tinsley Steve Simich Editor-Edgar Calvelo Meets on Tuesday at 6:30PM at Culinary Arts Center, Wine Train, 801 Eight Street Napa,CA District 5130 District Governor Jim Flamson ( Kathy ) Rotary Club of Calistoga 1818 Cedar St. Calistoga, CA shortform@aol.com Rotary International RI President Ray Klinginsmith ( Judie ) Rotary Club of Kirksville,MO February 1- Rich Melton UPCOMING PROGRAMS: Police Chief, Napa February 8- Lenore Hirsch February 15- Valentine s Party February 22-Paul Anderson Bring your spouse and guests Germany s Castles & Gardens Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication Rotary International News January 2011 As of 31 December, Rotarians have raised about $160 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.! PAGE 1
2 CLUB MEETING JANUARY 25, 2011 President Tom Webber rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Welcome. Steve Simich led the Pledge of Allegiance. Thought for the Day quoted by Tracy Tinsley- If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes. -John Wooden Introduction of guests: AG Kevin and Mary Eisenberg and Kathy Flamson, from Rotary Club of Calistoga; Doug Newell, Rotary Club of Napa Sunrise; Doug ( right ) with Bill Bresciani Wendy Bennett, spouse of Bill Bennett; Kathy ( left ) and Kevin (right) with George Shanks Wendy Cheri Calvelo, spouse of Edgar Calvelo; Mary Cheri! 4 Other guest: Alex Riddle, son of Mike Riddle. and immunologist, who spoke to the Rotary Club of North Napa on January 25, Alex in front of the Parliament Alex narrated the trip of the Vintage HS Marching Band to London, England. Dr. Francis Dr. Francis had directed the WHO smallpox eradication program in Sudan and Northern India. He worked at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for 21 years. Eradicating smallpox was easy when compared to eradicating polio. Eradicating polio is an extremely difficult job, he said. VSH Marching Band in London Only half of the members of the band went on the trip. The band paraded in front of the royalty; played at a concert in St. John s Cathedral and visited many sights in London. Lavon Riddle introduced Dr. Donald Francis. END POLIO NOW In January, 2011, there were only a few cases in Nigeria and India. In Northern India only 1-2 cases, said Donald Francis, M.D., founder of Global Solutions for Infectious Disease (GSID), a non-profit organization, trained pediatrician The man (on the le") has facial sma$pox scars During his training he had seen the iron lung machines used to treat polio patients with respiratory paralysis. He had seen the effects of polio everywhere he went in India. Rotary International started Polio Plus, the global project to eradicate Polio in the world, in WHO started also the polio initiative.! PAGE 4
5 END POLIO NOW I have not seen the impact of Rotarians in the polio eradication program until I saw the head of Rotary in India talked to the government officials in information about the vaccination which they thought can cause infertility of the Muslim people. 10 years after vaccination India. What do you want done? asked the government officials. This translates to complete public commitment he said. He saw the public mobilization of resources and people cooperation during the massive vaccination campaign against polio-polio vaccination as done globally. Tremendous progress had been made in polio eradication although 14 countries that were polio free but had importation of polio from one country with endemic cases.polio reestablished in 5 countries previously free of polio. Dr. Francis showed the map. the red color showed the polio endemic countries In countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, it is a tremendous challenge to control the disease, said Dr. Francis. A few village leaders had a misleading January 2011-much fewer red dots If we can immunize over ninety percent (90%) of the children maybe we can eradicate or control polio, said Dr. Francis. But there were still failures in vaccination. The cause still not known why in certain parts of India oral polio vaccine was only sixty five (65 %) effective. There are other issues to be addressed: sanitation, over-population, and infrastructure to fight polio. What to look for in the future? Polio is almost controlled though vaccination has to be continued. The other preventable infectious diseases can be dealt with next. Vaccination against measles can start. Measles still causes death in the third world countries. I m very optimistic for the future, said Dr. Francis. With Rotary and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and WHO working together so much can be accomplished.! PAGE 5
