Journal of Global Ethics 9 / Philanthropy and Wealth Creation in the USA Georges Enderle Mendoza College of Business University of Notre Dame Indiana USA Abstract With the development of the society the philanthropy s role in promoting social fairness and justice is increasingly highlighted. Andrew Carnegie was an outstanding pioneer of American philanthropy in the 19th century. His understanding of philanthropy can be summarized as a matter of duty to solve the problem caused by the disparity of the rich and the poor animated by the spirit of Christ. In the present United States philanthropy can be defined as altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement. Generally philanthropy can be divided into individual philanthropy and corporate philanthropy the purpose of both is to create wealth which unexpectedly endows the philanthropy in the United States with the economic meaning. Although both types of philanthropy usually present a number of positive features in some special cases philanthropies may strengthen the unjust social structure.
