5 Speaker biographies Dr Sinead Keogh Director, Medtech & Engineering Sectors, Ibec Sinead assumed the position of Director of the Ibec s newly formed Medtech and Engineering Sectors in February Sinead s role encompasses responsibility for; the Irish Medtech Association, of which she has been Director since July 2013, having previously worked at the Association since She is also the Director of the newly established Engineering Network in Ibec and has overall responsibility for the Plastics, Aerospace (manufacturing) and Forestry sectors. A number of Government Funded Networks fall under her remit as Director of Medtech & Engineering including; The Irish Medtech Association Skillnet, Connected Health Skillnet, First Polymer Training Skillnet, Irish Medtech Association Springboard+, Ibec Manufacturing Apprenticeship programme and Ibec Polymer Technology Apprenticeship Programme. In her capacity as Director, Sinead currently sits on a number of national and international boards including HIQA s HTA Advisory Board and the BioInnovate Ireland Board. In Europe, Sinead is a member of the EU National Associations Committees at Medtech Europe. She holds a Ph.D. and B.Sc in Applied Physics from DIT. Dr Ann O Connell Senior Industrial Research Fellow, Irish Manufacturing Research Centre Ann has spent 15 years in the manufacturing sector, she worked in a number of senior engineering roles in Intel, as Process Integration, Materials and Chemical Analysis engineer. Ann holds a PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from University College Dublin. On completion of her doctoral research and prior to joining IMR, Ann worked for Tyndall National Institute between 2014 and 2017 where she initially joined at the NanoNet coordinator. Later she moved into an Industry facing role engaging in an advisory capacity, coordinating collaborative research projects and advising Industry on Irish and EU funding options available to them, for advanced materials research. Ann has managed numerous projects in Industry and has recently won EU project coordination funding under the ECSEL framework from H2020. She also sat on the NMPB High Level Commission group in Brussels. As part of the role of NanoNet coordinator Ann worked between the universities in Ireland driving activities throughout Nanoweek. In 2015 the University of Limerick was nominated to run the NanoNet conference and there were coordinated outreach activities as part of the program. The role of NanoNet coordinator also enabled Ann to become a demonstrator on the SFI funded NanoWow CRANN Education and Outreach programme aimed at introducing primary school children to the world of materials and nanoscience and extending STEM further into the school curriculum. Since joining IMR Ann has directly run Outreach activities bringing together IMR industrial partners in collaboration with Mullingar schools. Ann drove the initiative and outlined a program that integrated IMR and their researchers into the programme with the Industrial partner to receive feedback that it was the best school engagement I have ever been involved with.

6 Speaker biographies / continued Stephen Lynam Head of R&D and Innovation, Trend Technologies Stephen leads the recently established Innovation and R&D programme at Trend Technologies in Mullingar, the local subsidiary of global contract manufacturer, Trend Technologies LLC. This includes managing R&D and Innovation projects, R&D partner networks and collaboration with industry organisations and academic institutions. He is leading Trend s Continuous Improvement and Innovation (C.I&I) program, overseeing the C.I&I project portfolio and responsible for developing a framework for project scoring, selection and management. Stephen is a IPMA certified Project Manager with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and a HDip in Software Development and Design. At Trend Technologies he specialises in injection moulding, polymer technology and plastic part and tool design. Stephen s previous role has seen him successfully project manage some of the largest tooling programmes within Trend Technologies globally, including leading teams across 3 continents and managing up to 85 tool builds concurrently. Fergal Finn Standards Officer, NSAI Fergal Finn is a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from University Limerick. He has been a Standard Officer with NSAI since 2008 project managing Technical Standards Committees. Drilling in the oil & gas industry forms the backbone of his engineering professional experience. He is part of the Business Development Standards Development team in NSAI focusing on supporting SME s through standardization. He is also tasked with promoting Irish participation in the development of International (ISO) and European (EN) Standards in emerging technologies such as Additive Manufacturing, Industrial Robot Collaborative Operations and Nanotechnologies. Vincent Leonard Director of Sales and Marketing, LBSPartners LBSPartners Vincent Leonard is a coaching-based business process improvement consultancy with unrivalled experience finding the right solution for each business challenge. Vincent is the key client contact with the company, increasing brand awareness of LBSPartners and broadening the understanding of Lean for the clients. With a background in Financial Services, and leading large teams of people, Vincent uses his skills to market the firm s range of training programmes through its client base and business partners. With this role Vincent s priority is the client as the initial contact and advisor at the early stages in the Lean Journey. With a Black Belt, certified from University of Limerick, Vincent tailors the programmes on offer to particular needs dependant on the client s requirements, ranging from SME s to Multinationals. Brendan Sheppard CEO, Smart Factory Brendan Sheppard is a professional Mechanical Engineer with more than 20 years experience in project management and engineering consultancy gained in a range of leading multinational organisations including Procter & Gamble, Coty Inc., Accantia, Tambrands and Boeing.

7 He is an expert in data acquisition, reporting and continuous process improvement systems gained in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and Lean manufacturing environments. As CEO of SmartFactory, Brendan has been the driving force behind the development of an innovative data capturing, analytics and visualisation solution, specifically for medical device manufacturing. Dr Noel Hennessey CEO & Founder, Practical Lean Solutions Noel is the founder of Practical Lean Solutions, com and has over 20 years experience of implementing Lean Manufacturing and other Change Management Programs. Noel did this most notably in his role as Enterprise Excellence Director at his former employer, Lake Region Medical, where he led the company to achieve Shingo Bronze Medallion status in 2012 and Prior to that Noel held leadership roles with SeaGate Technologies, GSK, TEVA, 3 COM, and Measurex. In 2007 Noel was awarded his MSc in Lean Operations from Cardiff University, and he received his Doctorate in Business Administration from Waterford Institute of Technology in His Doctoral research explores the relationship between Employee Engagement and Continuous Improvement. Noel is a certified Shingo Prize Examiner and his search for Best Practice has seen him participate in benchmarking visits across Europe, United States, India, and Japan. A passionate advocate of the transformational power of Lean Manufacturing, and the Shingo Prize Model in particular, Noel is a regular presenter at National and International Enterprise Excellence Forums. He has served a number of years in a voluntary capacity as Chairman of the South East Lean Forum, and as a board member of the Irish Centre for Business Excellence. Noel lectures part-time on Lean Six Sigma at I.T. Carlow, and he is also a regular contributor to the Waterford Institute of Technology Master of Business in Lean Enterprise Excellence programme. Pauline O Flanagan Network Skills Manager, Ibec Pauline O Flanagan has worked with the Irish Medtech Association, an Ibec sector association since 2008, and oversees the Irish Medtech Skillnet, Irish Medtech Springboard and Irish Medtech and Plastics Irl. Apprenticeship training and networks programmes. She is also chairperson of the Employment Activation Group for Skillnets and is a member of the Midwest Regional Skills Forum. Pauline has been instrumental in the developing of industry certification with SOLAS (formally Fas) since 2000 as chairperson of Irish Medtech s Training for Competence in Manufacturing group and in 2014 was a member of QQI expert group for development awards for supervisors in manufacturing. Prior to joining Ibec, she worked as a mentor, technical trainer and a lean consultant implementing lean principles in the medical devices and diagnostic industry. In 2008, she presented her lean black belt theses in Transforming the Medical Device Industry. Pauline has worked in various managerial roles both in research and manufacturing in Cambridge Diagnostics, Olympus Diagnostics & Beckman Coulter for over 18 years. Pauline holds a Bachelor in Science from NUI Galway and an MBA from University of Limerick. She also holds a Diploma in Managing Business Networks from DIT and a Certificate in Training & Development, NUI Galway.
