I. Remarks by the Committee Chair DISCUSSION: The Committee chair, Mr. John Griffin, will welcome guests and provide an overview of the meeting agenda. 1
II. Big Idea: Solving the World s Hardest Problems BACKGROUND: In an ongoing series of faculty presentations, the Committee will have the opportunity to learn about faculty projects and initiatives with the potential to attract transformative philanthropic gifts and to distinguish the University in multiple areas. DISCUSSION: Since its beginning, the University of Virginia has been a place of great innovation. One might even conceive of UVA as a nearly 200-year-old start-up. The Galant Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship seeks to build upon the University s foundation of innovation in an audacious effort to Solve the World s Hardest Problems. This pan-university program, hosted by the McIntire School of Commerce and the Galant Center, seeks to engage teams of interdisciplinary thinkers in a semester-long competition to address, in a practical manner, the most vexing and persistent problems of our times. Unlike traditional pitch competitions, in this Galant Center initiative, the brightest minds from the University and across the world will frame a challenge each year posed to the entire University community, encouraging a contest of ideas and a spirit of innovation. Solving the World s Hardest Problems will be a cornerstone to the Galant Center s intention to weave innovation into the very fabric of the student experience across the University through the creation of courses, hands-on engagement, and physical environments that promote nimble minds at the intersection of critical thinking and creativity. Eric Martin, Interim Director and co-founder of the Galant Center, will provide a brief overview of this big idea, and a discussion with Board members will follow. In addition to his role at the Galant Center, Mr. Martin is Director of the University of Richmond s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program; he has lectured at MIT, Yale, and Virginia Commonwealth University s Brandcenter among many other universities. He also currently advises clients throughout the world on issues of innovation, transformation, and corporate growth as a Partner at Fahrenheit 212, one of the world s premier innovation firms. Through 80amps for Startups, the incubator he founded, Mr. Martin provides new venture guidance to marketing, communications, and fintech startups in the 80amps portfolio. 2
Mr. Martin has also worked as a Wall Street and regional commercial and investment banker and private equity partner; served as President of TM Vista and as a member of Ticketmaster s Global Leadership Group; led Gemini Consulting s Global Technology and Telecommunications practice in the Americas; and co-founded Martin Associates, a marketing firm serving financial institutions and industry. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in Economics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and he holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School. 3
III. Discussion of University s Global Engagement Activities for the Bicentennial Celebration DISCUSSION: Ms. Cynthia Cindy S. Fredrick, Associate Vice President for Engagement & Annual Giving, will provide an overview of draft plans to engage alumni, parents, and friends around the world in the Bicentennial Celebration. Planning includes regional events for UVA clubs around the globe, Lifelong Learning events with faculty, and digital and direct marketing. Ms. Fredrick will seek additional thoughts and recommendations from Board members. 4
IV. Community Rewards & Recognition Program BACKGROUND: The Community Excellence (ACE) Awards is a peer-driven program that rewards and recognizes employees across the University. ACE Awards are given to individuals who exemplify key values that strengthen the work of the community and support and further the University s advancement efforts. An important goal of the program is to facilitate collaboration among and between the various areas at UVA. The ACE Awards are managed by an Community Rewards & Recognition Committee, which oversees and facilitates the operations, review process, and distribution of awards as well as a year-end culmination event. Awards can range from appreciation cards to monetary awards to recognition of advancement teams. DISCUSSION: Mr. Lo Davis, an Associate Director at the Virginia Athletics Foundation, and Ms. Heidi Kozuch, Associate Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship in University, will report to the Committee on their work to develop the ACE program. 5
V. Discussion with the Vice President for DISCUSSION: Mr. Luellen will report on FY 2017 philanthropic cash flow and new commitments through December 31, Philanthropic cash flow measures actual gifts received by the University during a specific fiscal year. It includes cash or cash equivalents received for philanthropic purposes; it does not include pledges or future support (bequest expectancies, annuities, etc.). Through December 31, cash flow for FY 2017 was $161 million, up 36.3% compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. New commitments through December 31 (new gifts and new pledge amounts) stood at $171.2 million, an increase of 54% over the same period in FY When combined with new future support, total new commitments reached $187.1 million, a 47% increase over the previous year. Mr. Luellen will also lead a discussion on campaign planning progress to date. 6
