1896 FAMILY PROFILE Seamus Cavanagh manages a salmon cannery cooperative in Alaska, established to streamline the operations of all salmon fisheries and improve profits. Seamus and his wife, Eileen, have four children and divide their time between San Francisco and Sitka, Alaska. Annual Income: $5,500 Seamus income includes his salary managing the cannery association ($2,400), stock market income, and a part interest in his father s fishing supply company. Annual Budget The average per capita consumer expenditure in 1896 is not available. Life at Home Seamus was born in New Jersey, the son of Irish immigrants. His parents brought the family westward in the 1860s to California, one of America s leading fishing states. His father has created a company in San Francisco that specializes in fishing supplies; offices have been established in Vancouver, British Columbia, Seattle, and Astoria, Oregon. One of the Cavanagh s four children. 31
Working Americans Volume II: The Middle Class Christmas cards make the holiday season more joyous; many cards are elaborate and German-made. Seamus married the daughter of a Canadian salmoncannery operator; he met her during his extensive travels throughout the Pacific coast serving as a drummer, or salesman, for his father s fishing supply concern. This 46-year old man, his wife, and four children, own a home both in San Francisco and in Sitka, Alaska; the home in Alaska was designed using plans taken from a picture in a magazine. During the salmon season he lives in Alaska; seven months out of the year he operates out of San Francisco, where he has many vendor and other business connections. Eileen has come to love the social circle of a big city and often dreads the trips into the wilderness each year. Two years ago, her youngest child died of measles and is buried in Sitka; returning to the grave each year is difficult. She is involved with charity work at the Salvation Army in San Francisco; the Stevenson Street Women s Shelter and Receiving Home was recently opened, where homeless women can get a bed for a nickel. She is currently heading up a shoe-and-stocking fund drive for poor children through the Salvation Army, hoping that a supply of shoes will improve school attendance among the poor. The Salvation Army also recently began a fund to help discharged convicts; the wealthy of the city are placing offering boxes on their dining tables so guests can contribute. When her husband is on business in Alaska, she enjoys attending lectures. Recently she heard the Rev. Anna Shaw, who shares with Miss Susan B. Anthony the distinction of leading the female suffrage agitation in this country, according to the San Francisco Examiner. The Christmas season is special for the Cavanaghs; Eileen makes a great effort to mail fancy, German-made Christmas cards to her childhood friend in British Columbia, Seamus family in New Jersey, and their friends in San Francisco and Sitka. She also enjoys the latest fashions, often hiring a Chinese seamstress to copy the elegant designs that appear in magazines such as The Delineator. Her husband is closely watching the presidential election, which is pitting Republican William McKinley against Democrat populist William Jennings Bryan. Bryan s plans to print silver in a ratio of 16 silver coins to every gold dollar and thus create more money in circulation appears an excellent way of wresting control away from the East by creating inflation; he believes the gold standard has outlived its usefulness. Bryan appears to be gaining support throughout the West, building momentum like a prairie fire. 32
Thanks to an invention making the manufacture of political campaign buttons inexpensive, thousands of pictures of both candidates are arriving, even in remote Alaska. The boys love anything related to the sea, shipping, and conquering the water; they are currently building a small boat, with their grandfather s help, and imagining a trip across the harbor. Presidential paraphernalia: McKinley vs. Bryan 33
Working Americans Volume II: The Middle Class The sea, shipping, and conquering the water are favorite subjects for the Cavanagh boys. Tea around the Table: Handkerchiefs, The Delineator, A Journal of Fashion, Culture and Fine Arts, published by the Butterick Publishing Company, 1896: Take my word for it, my dears, no part of feminine belongings so truly shows the refined gentlewoman as does the handkerchief. Heavy with embroidery or drawn-work it need not be indeed, any aggressive decoration is in bad taste; but dainty and fine it must be, the finer the better. Who has not seen the toilette of an otherwise well-dressed woman quite spoiled by a coarse, common handkerchief! A mouchoir with a colored border may look smart when tucked into a jacket front, but such an extreme better befits Mrs. Dashaway than it does Mme. Juste- Milieu. A frock may be very elegant, but it is the little things that confirm the wearer s claim to being a well-dressed woman. Even if a gown or jacket shows wear, the fresh and well-fitted shoes and gloves, the pretty veil, and fine handkerchief redeem the whole. 34
The creation of corporations quickly led to specialized and branded salmon marketing. Life at Work After several years of running a canning company for his father-in-law, Seamus organized a group of Alaskan canners as a single association. This plan is to improve profits for all Alaskan canners in the association by reducing competition among each other; this will allow them to control the price of salmon, even during the peak years. The structure he created relies on centralized control and volume buying, abandoning the high-risk, owner-managed cannery for a corporation operated by salaried executives. He believes the rapid expansion of the canneries in the early 1890s was creating suicidal competition. Many canneries were cutting prices so severely, they could not repay their bank loans or pay for the netting, supplies, and canning materials they needed. Following the consolidation, he was asked to manage the 24 canneries that formed the new corporation; each of the former owner-managers is now a director of the association. Within this structure, he has reduced the cost of operations; he can also control the quantity and price of raw fish available to each cannery and control the market for canned salmon. Most of all, the corporate structure eliminates internal competition for fish and seasonal labor. 35
